2 2 NOV-DEC 2018 HOW TO REGISTER You can register for classes online at knoxvilletn.gov/kafcc, by phone at (865) , or in person. Payment is due at the time of registration and no later than five working days of the class start date. Please note that no student s space will be held without full payment. Cash, checks, and credit cards are accepted. We cannot prorate sessions. Effective September 1st, 2018, all registrations and payments made less than 5 days prior to the start of class (excluding 1 or 2 day classes) will be subject to a late fee. CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS All classes must meets minimum enrollment requirement before they begin. We reserve the right to cancel any class with insufficient enrollment. Fees are 100% refundable if the class is canceled by Knoxville Arts and Fine Crafts Center. Students needing to cancel, should notify KAFCC as soon as possible. Refunds and credits are given at the discretion of the City of Knoxville. OPEN STUDIO FOR RETURNING CLAY STUDENTS $100 Available in four week increments for students who have completed a full beginner, intermediate or advanced course in our studios. Fee includes 25lbs. of clay, glazes, firing, and time in the studio during designated hours. Those wishing to register for open studio must do so in person. Listing of open studio hours for each month are available at KAFCC and on our website. OTHER SERVICES BIRTHDAY PARTIES & SPECIAL EVENTS Party with KAFCC! Planning a Birthday Party or Special Event? Let KAFCC help you with those plans. Whether it is a Birthday party, Girl s Night Out or Team-Building Retreat, we can offer a unique and fun experience. We can tailor the activity to your imagination. No idea what you want to do? That s okay- we have plenty of ideas to help inspire you. We provide the Instruction, materials, and basic decorations to help you make your celebration or event as hassle-free as possible. Activities usually last 1 1/2 hours and pricing is based on the activity. Please call for more information and to reserve your spot. Scheduling is based on availability. These unique classes focus on a theme from art history or geographic culture and are organizes in 4 week units. The classes provide engaging, educational fun with hands-on projects for two age groups: 5-8 year olds, and 9-14 year olds. Your curious students will be sure to love the entire line-up of classes! 3 3 NOV-DEC 2018 KIDS & FAMILY CLASSES PRESCHOOL & FAMILY CREATIVE PRE-BALLET $75 AGES 3-5 Saturdays, November 10th- December 22nd (no class 11/24) 10:15 am- 11:00 am Instructor: Sandy Larson Children will experience the joy of dance with creativity, imagination, and age appropriate ballet techniques! Preschool specialist Sandy Larson will guide and encourage students using a fun approach with props and both fun and classical music. Students are invited to perform at Fantasy of Trees in November and the in-studio recital at the end of the winter session on December 22. PRESCHOOL ART $10 AGES DAY CLASS A.Friday November 2nd B.Friday November 30th C.Friday December 14th 10:00 am-11:00 am Instructor: KAFCC Staff Bring your little one for some creative fun on the first and fourth Friday of each month! Kids ages 3-5 will make art projects, enjoy picture books, and do other fun activities, while parents get a short break. You and your budding artists will look forward to this class! KIDS ELEMENTARY BALLET $88 AGES WEEKS Tuesdays, November 6th- December 18th 5:30 pm- 6:15 pm Instructor: Sandy Larson Children will learn ballet techniques at the barre, center, diagonal, and combinations to perform a complete ballet dance with professional dancer and teacher, Sandy Larson. Then this class is for you! Join us on select Wednesdays for an engaging after school art class. Each week we will explore a fun project, and learn about different art materials like painting and drawing materials, collage, and even clay! This is way better than TV!
4 4 NOV-DEC 2018 TEENS CONCEPT ART & $125 CHARACTER CREATION AGES WEEKS Mondays, November 5th- December 10th (No class 11/26) 5:30 pm- 8:30 pm Instructor: Alex Bonner In this class we will learn about the process through which creative studios and organizations conceptualize characters, environments and stories. Class activities will be based off of improvisation, play, and other methods designed to break an individual out of rigid thinking. Some pieces that a students can expect to walk away with are their own original characters, a variety of facial and body positions for these characters, environments, and other elements used in their world building. ADULT CLASSES SHORT CLASSES & WORKSHOPS PEN & INK ENHANCED $60 WITH WATERCOLOR Saturday, November 10th 9:00 am 12:00 pm Instructor: Diann Bishop This is a fun course that will let you play with watercolors enhanced with pen and ink renderings. We will work with drawing skills in this class as well as the basics of understanding watercolor. In the drawing part of this class we will focus on directional lines and cross hatching skills. Composition will also be addressed in this class. Please bring photos of subject matter you would like to translate into pen and ink with watercolor washes. Please see materials list. WOVEN CLAY BASKETS $60 1-DAY WORKSHOP Saturday, November 10th 11:00 am 3:00 pm Instructor: Parker Pressnell Learn the art of weaving clay into baskets! This workshop will encourage you to push clay to its limits in sculptural design. Using strips of clay, we will create woven baskets inspired by my grandmother s process of weaving wooden chair seats from grass strings. All clay, tools, and firing included. HISTORICAL SURFACES: $55 TERRA SIGILLATA 2- PART WORKSHOP Wednesday, November 14th & 28th 3:00 pm 5:00 pm Terra Sigillata roughly translates to sealed earth. In this two-part class students will learn a surface decorating technique that dates back to the Roman Empire! In the first class vessels will be made using slab, coil, or pinching. The Vessels will be left to get bone dry and then we get to work. Clay, colored Terra Sigillata, glazes, and firings will be included. Some handbuilding experience required.
5 5 NOV-DEC 2018 MIXED MEDIA COLLAGE $30 Wednesday, November 28th 5:30 pm 8:00 pm Bridge the gap between drawing and painting in this fun mixed media class. Students will learn the basics of collage using a variety of papers and imagery. We will then work with mixed media drawing materials including acrylic inks, water-soluble wax pastels oil pastels, graphite, and more! Students can take inspiration from provided images and sources, but we will let the materials guide us as we layer away and learn about expressive mark-making, color, and positive and negative space. This class is for everyone who loves to draw, doodle, or scribble! ACRYLIC TRANSFER $50 WORKSHOP 2-PART WORKSHOP Monday, December 3rd & 10th 3:00 pm 5:00 pm Learn to transfer images from magazines and photocopies using acrylic mediums in this fun mixed media class! First we will learn processes and tips for successfully transferring images. We will also discuss composition, color, and how to transform transferred images into original works of art. In part two of the workshop we will apply what we have learned to our finished transfers using acrylic paint, collage, and drawing materials. This class is great for all levels! HISTORICAL SURFACES: $55 MAIOLICA 2- PART WORKSHOP Wednesday, December 11th & 18th 10:00 am 12:00 pm Travel back in time at KAFCC! In this two- part class you will experiment and learn how Renaissance Potters decorated their wares. Class Participants will make a square plate with a foot from a single slab and then design the decoration to fill the surface of the plate. Image transfer and overglaze painting will be part of the instruction. All specialty clay, glazes, and overglazes will be provided. PAINTING & DRAWING ACRYLICS & OILS PAINTING $100 4-WEEK CLASS A. Tuesdays, October 30th November 20th B. Tuesdays, November 27th December 18th 1:00 pm 4:00 pm Instructor: Betty Fortenberry Whether you are a beginner or experienced painter, you are sure to enjoy this informative class! During this course you will learn the basic processes of painting including laying out a composition, color mixing, shading, and detail work. Students will work from a photograph or image of their choice. Please see materials list for this class. AMAZING ACRYLICS $150 Thursday, November 1st- December 13th (No class 11/22) 6:00 pm 9:00 pm Learn the basics of painting with this user-friendly medium. Students will learn how to block-in a composition using basic planes and values. Building on these principles, students will then learn how to work with color and build detail
6 6 NOV-DEC 2018 while maintaining a fresh approach to representation. Throughout the course, students will learn techniques with different acrylic mediums and additives to make this amazing paint work in a variety of ways. This class is great for those wishing to learn more about the process of painting, whether they are beginners or more experienced painters. MIXED MEDIA $125 4-WEEK CLASS Thursday, November 1st- 29th (No class on 11/22) 9:00 am 12:00 pm Instructor: Deb Rule In this class, I share my process for making mixed media art! As a class we will experiment with various acrylic mediums, watercolor, gouache, markers, pens and any other water based mediums you would like to try. We will focus on layering these mediums to create rich, textured surfaces on paper that will be stretched like canvas. If you need a break from your art process or you just want to learn some different mixed media approaches to painting, this class is for you! All skill levels are welcome! DRAWING: BEYOND THE LINE $100 4-WEEK CLASS Friday, November 9th- December 7th (No class 11/23) 10:00 am 12:00 pm In this comprehensive drawing class students will learn to think beyond the line by using a variety of materials and techniques. We will loosen up through quick studies and also complete longer, sustained drawings in charcoal, graphite, and ink. Each week students will be introduced to a new way of approaching drawing from direct observation, focusing on value, mass, and positive/ negative space as the building blocks of illusionism and 3-d form. Take your drawing practice to the next dimension- beyond the line! UNDERPAINTING LIKE THE $105 DUTCH MASTERS Tuesday, November 13th December 18th 5:30 pm 8:00 pm Instructor: Diann Bishop This class will introduce you to underpainting and glaze techniques with many mediums. The Dutch masters perfected underpainting techniques by layering their paintings in neutrals then applying glazes of pure color. You will learn layering, glazing and creating mood with color and light. Watercolor and drawing techniques will be covered as well. ADULT DRAWING $100 Tuesday, November 13th- December 18th 10:00 am 12:00 pm Instructor: Susie Holt This six-week class is for both the beginner and intermediate students who have had some drawing experience. We will focus on mark making by using line. Students will use creative exercises and direct observation to break down shapes in order to draw what you see! This class will cover line and expressive mark-making, sketching, contour, gesture, value, scale and shadowing.
7 7 NOV-DEC 2018 CLAY ADULT HAND BUILDING $170 Tuesday, October 30th December 4th 10:00 am 12:30 pm Instructor: Cathy Maples During this 6 week class, beginner and intermediate students will experiment with various hand building techniques. Students will use the slab roller and extruder to create a wide variety of decorative items including vases, platters, birdhouses, slab boxes and more. Personal attention will be given to each student helping them to achieve their goals. This class will also have an emphasis on surface design and glazing. Class includes clay, tools, glazes, and firing. THROWING FOR $195 SKILLED BEGINNERS Monday, November 5th December 10th 6:00 pm 8:30 pm Instructor: Amanda Humphreys Phew! You finished your first beginning wheel throwing class and you can t wait to get your hands dirty again! This class is perfect for you. There will be a refresher on basic skills as well as learning to throw some new forms! This class is also perfect for people who have not thrown in a while. Amanda will touch on the glazing process as well. Clay, glazes, and tools are included. FIGURATIVE SCULPTURE $120 5-WEEK CLASS Thursday, November 8th December 13th 10:00 am 12:00 pm Instructor: Annamaria Gundlach Master basic sculpture skills while creating figurative sculptures, masks and garden art. Create 3D ceramic works while concentrating on form and composition. Experience the wonders of clay as you learn several different techniques from additive to reductive methods to gain a basic knowledge of clay as an expressive art medium. Surface decorating techniques will be discussed as well. Clay, tools, and firings included. FORM, FUNCTION, $175 AND FINESSE 5-WEEK CLASS Thursday, November 8th December 13th 6:00 pm 9:00 pm Clay is such a versatile medium. In this 6-week class we are going to see just how much fun that versatility can be as we explore the functional and non-functional things clay can do. This class will be a nice mixture of making objects and considering the objects surfaces. Clay, glazes, underglazes, tools and firings are included in this class fee. 8 8 NOV-DEC 2018 HOLIDAY WORKSHOPS KIDS & FAMILY KID S DAY OUT: $20 ORNAMENT WORKSHOP Ages 6-12 Saturday, November 24th 10:00 am- 1:00 pm Instructor: KAFCC Staff Black Friday is over but the Holidays are right around the corner. Parents, if you need some extra shopping time and want the kids to be jolly too send them to KAFCC for this Fun 3 hour workshop where they will learn to hand make 3 different ornaments, decorate a gingerbread person and sip hot chocolate! All materials are provided for this fun filled Holiday Class! FAMILY FUN NIGHT AT KAFCC $25 AGES 3+ 1-NIGHT CLASS Friday, November 30th, 6:00 pm-8:30 pm $25 per Family (up to 5 people) $5 each additional participant Come join us once a month for an evening of Family Fun! The staff at KAFCC will get your imaginations going with fun projects for the whole family. Join us for a seasonal Family Fun Night in November where Holiday Time is Family Time! Join the KAFCC staff and make clay cut-out ornaments. Work together to cut, underglaze, and decorate your cut outs. Whether you hang them in your own house or give them to friends and family you will surely make memories! All materials include. COOKIES FOR SANTA PLATE $15 Ages 5-9 Saturday, December 1st 1:00 pm -2:30 pm Jolly Old St. Nick would love to take his late-night snack off a plate that is hand painted by you! Join us to paint a cookie plate. We supply the underglaze you supply the Holiday Scene. The KAFCC staff will glaze your masterpiece for you to leave out for Santa & his crew! All Materials included. SILLY ELF PORTRAITS $10 Ages 6-12 Saturday, December 1st 11:00 am- 12:30 pm Transform yourself into an elf! In this fun workshop kids will decorate a photo of themselves using oil pastels and collaged paper to make the silliest elf self- portrait they can dream up. Pointy hats, collars with bells, and elf ears are only the beginning! The pieces will be finished off with a festive frame so your elfish self can revisit each Holiday Season for years to come.
9 9 NOV-DEC 2018 SANTA S WORKSHOP $40 Ages 6-12 Saturday, December 15th 9:00 am- 1:00 pm Instructor: KAFCC Staff Little Elves come to KAFCC to make gifts with your own hands! In this super fun workshop we will make and wrap surprises for your family. You will even make your own wrapping paper and gift tags! SHHH! Keep the secret of what you made but tell Mom & Dad how much fun you had in Santa s Workshop! All materials included. ADULTS & TEENS COOKIE TRAYS! $40 Saturday, November 17th 1:00 pm -4:00 pm Put your Holiday Cookies on handmade trays this holiday season. In this class we will cut slabs into shapes and use soft forms to drape them over, add feet and Voila! You have a Cookie Tray! Add texture and pick your favorite glaze to create a tray that will be deserving of your cookies. All materials included. If time permits, participants can make several trays. No experience necessary. COLORFUL COASTERS! $30 Teens and Adults Wednesday, December 5th 6:00 pm -8:00 pm Get gift ready in this fun, fast paced workshop. You will create a colorful and unique set of four tile coasters & two tile trivets painted with brightly colored alcohol inks. Alcohol Inks create super saturated watercolor-like effects on slick surfaces. You can quickly mix and swirl your way to a beautiful handmade gift that will last well beyond the Holliday Season!
