1 This Project is funded in part by the City of Richardson through the Richardson Arts Commission Volume 48, Issue 6 Michael O Keefe Figure Drawing March 2014 March 18, :30-8:45 PM Richardson Public Library Michael O Keefe's art work is necessarily figurative, not because it depends on the object it portrays, but rather because the figure, as an entity in its own right, is the pivot around which his world moves. Michael just completed his third solo exhibition at Valley House Gallery, Jan 18-Feb. 22, 2014 displaying his string drawings, drill drawings, paintings, and sculpture. In general, with my work there are two parts to the narrative; there is the image or the figuration, and there is the material process. All works of art are, in their final state, conclusions of a process. The characters, images and fantasies that are formed in the work are born out of that process. The expression and narratives of the work are rooted in my individualistic mind, but it is the process, the act(ion), that allows the fictions to contend with reality. The process offers me, the creator, an opportunity to discover, allows the work to move through layers of conditioning, experience, influence and desire to a deeper mythic lair.
2 FEBRUARY DEMONSTRATION Jeff Good Watercolor He uses either 140lb or 300lb paper, and tears the paper rather than cutting it because he likes the frazzled edge. Before starting the watercolor, he does a value study using a water soluble graphite stick. The drawing on the watercolor paper is done with a pencil that is anywhere from B to 5B; he never uses an H strength pencil. He starts with an underpainting of warm, loosely applied washes. After that dries, he moves on to establishing values. You need to have the painting in your mind or else you will get lost. While still wet, the wash can be modified. Edges are hard and soft. My favorite medium has been oil, then pastel and, since 1990, caricature...in any medium. That year the Lord gave me the most wonderful "gift" while drawing funny quick sketches of the kids at our church's Fall Festival...What a joy it was drawing their sweet faces; I was hooked!! For years now that has been my vocation, caricaturing at events, creating gift and award caricatures in my home studio and attending International Society of Caricaturists conventions around the country for classes, networking, competition and fun with some of the most amazing people loving people from around the world Coming up in July, I will be returning for the ninth year to Dominican Republic where I teach the Good News of Jesus Christ and share my "gift" of love through caricature with some of the sweetest people on earth. God just keeps giving me joy!! 6 Message from the President Beth Eschbach March is a busy time of year for RCAS. We have the Rosemary Cheney Show hanging in the library now. It s a representation of the elementary kids art from RISD. Stop up on the second floor to view their creative, colorful works. The Regional Show entries are in and on their way to our juror, Xiang Zhang. Letters of acceptance will arrive around March 31. Best of luck to all our entrants. The 50+ Show has a March 22nd take-in date. This show is open to anyone over age 50, member or not. This year you may enter up to three paintings, so it is sure to be a grand show. Lots of cash and merchandise prizes will be awarded. There is still time to get your work framed and ready for the show. The board has been working on plans for the Season which begins on June 1st. It takes many volunteers to make it all work and we are so thankful for those who help us out year after year. Maybe this is the year you step up and help. Talk to any board member to find out more.
