1 This Project is funded in part by the City of Richardson through the Richardson Arts Commission Volume 46, Issue 8 May 2012 Oil Portrait Demo by David Kramer May 15, :00-8:45 PM Richardson Public Library Basement Meeting Room Award-winning artist Dave Kramer grew up in La Porte, IN, one of six children. He studied fine art at Indiana University and, while still a student, painted illustrations for several design studios. In 1985, he moved to Dallas, TX, and embarked upon a career as a freelance illustrator. He has now moved into the area he truly loves: painting fine art and portraits in a Romantic or Iconic Realism style. BOOK ART Dave painted book illustrations for: Bantam Books Harcourt, Brace Harper Collins Henry Holt Reader's Digest Scholastic Books Tor and many more PET PORTRAITS PEOPLE PORTRAITS I find my most satisfying work to be in the personal and fine art category. Unlike commercial work, where there are many restraints put on me that can stifle creativity, fine art allows me to enjoy the whole painting process. Being able to achieve a higher degree of emotion and texture through the traditional way of oil painting enables me to express more fully my love for people and costumes. I believe this delight is evident in my personal work. Having total control even extends into the framing process, as I have on several occasions made one-of-a-kind frames in my wood shop. Teaching. Dave teaches on Saturdays at the Creative Art Center of Dallas, a non-profit art school. He also gives private lessons at his studio.

4 APRIL DEMONSTRATION Dr. Jerry McGrew Dr. James McGrew is a truly remarkable person; not only is he proficient in art, he also uses his musical talent professionally. And he taught us a lot about the art of sketching. To quote him, Sketching is the art of putting down an idea fast. It is dramatically different from drawing. It is loose, impressionistic and limited to very few values and colors. We started with only a few brave participants, growing throughout the year. Its purpose is for those who have a work "in progress" and would like positive feedback from the gathered group. We have an RCAS member "discussion leader" to facilitate comments. All artists love a conversation about art!! So be a person in need of critique on a work OR just an interested participant. Remember, we're all still learnin' and need positive suggestions, even the experienced artists. Join the group and bring a painting (only one, please) Tuesday, May 15 at 6:00pm the Critique Corner. 5
