2 Volume 45, Issue 1 September, PAINTING OF THE MONTH WINNERS May, st Place Carol Tryhall, Night Bloom, watercolor 2nd Place Ron Stever, Jackson, oil 3rd Place Toni Wengler, Snow at White Bluff, watercolor RCAS thanks to Asel Art Supply for their continued support of Painting of the Month. Asel contributes the merchandise certificates for 1st and 2nd prizes. Please patronize our sponsor. Joel Sampson - Photography The final chapter meeting of RCAS featured a demo by Joel Sampson on the history of photography and how to use it in creating both pieces of art and aiding in developing other forms of art through the ages. Joel has a MA in Journalism and MCS in Computer Science from the University of Dayton and has been taking pictures for a long time. He started by discussing the camera obscuras used by the old masters, which was basically tracing inverse reflections off the wall. The first photographer was Joseph Niepce in 1826 when the process developing the picture took all day. Imaging rapidly improved in developing agents that speeded up processing of the film, however toxicity remained a problem. With the coming of the daguerreotype camera to the US (Samuel F.B. Morse), photography proliferated in the United States. Many family photos are left on tintypes from this era. As the process to develop pictures became easier and the camera cheaper, more families took their own pictures with their Kodak Brownies and continued to today with the arrival of digital photography. The artist has always used to camera to capture images to put on various medias, and today there is a part of art that acknowledges the artistry with a camera alone. Joel took us through the types of cameras and printers available in a wide price range for those interested in photography. He ended his demo by offering a sheet with web sites to check out for help and information on creating photography worthy of display as art.

6 Volume 45, Issue 1 September, Designing Directions Ready, Set, Go! An exciting year is ahead for our wonderful art society! I am so proud to be your President this year mainly because of all of you who make RCAS an absolutely outstanding art group - not only for your talent but your generosity of spirit. I am assured, because of our past accomplishments, we represent our city and surrounding areas with deserved pride. One of your Board s and my goals this year is to become more visible to the residents so they can share in the opportunities to create, display and grow in their artistic talent. Some exciting announcements that will help implement this goal are: #1 RCAS has been chosen to be the subject of The Scene section in the Fall issue of the local publication, Richardson Living magazine, which is mailed to 20,000 residents of Richardson. I am so indebted to them for choosing us to feature in this section! #2 RCAS has been nominated by a private citizen to receive the prestigious Business and Industry Award given by the Richardson Chamber of Commerce! We will not know if we actually won until later in the fall, but what an honor to be nominated! This award is given to a public sector or non-profit entity, or an educational institution (may be Richardson-based or not), for its impact and distinguished service to the businesses and citizens of Richardson as evidenced by a recent achievement milestone. The recent winners of this award were UTD and the Richardson Symphony Orchestra! Illustrious company, indeed! Last, but not least, please respond to the Survey in this Sketchpad issue we NEED to know your opinions and suggestions to make this year a fulfilling one for all.
