2 OCTOBER DEMONSTRATION CECY TURNER Aspens of Colorado Watercolor The subjects of Cecy Turner s demonstration were aspens from Colorado, a place where she spends some of her time. Parts of the demonstration were done in a manner very unusual for watercolor; the paper was mounted vertically on an easel. She sometimes makes small sketches of the painting before starting to paint. The trees were already drawn in pencil on the 300 lb. paper. She started at the top and worked her way down, wetting areas around the trees. Some of these areas are meant to be skies; she touched them with blue paint. Then she used red and yellow paints for the leaves, blending them on the wet paper to give a soft transition from yellow to orange. She worked her way around the tree trunks, leaving some parts uncovered and covering other parts. Splattering paint is also part of her technique. When sprinkling, she could mask off an area. She used a synthetic brush to soften edges that were too hard. And of course, she was working from light to dark. And when she used a color, she put it all over the place, to quote her. When we paused for the break, the work was an underpainting at that time. A light layer of tan was added to the tree trunks on the right side to give them roundness. Then it was time for the dark color on the trunks. She likes to use a warm black. She had a light and dark plan She said that colors are more interesting when they merge. Cooler colors were used for the background, and she wanted to make the shapes interesting. Be mindful every time you re touching the paper; think of the shape. The groundcover of yellow, orange and green was darkened in the foreground and a medium value was woven through the midsection of the groundcover. This was followed by weaving a dark through the trees in the background Cecy Turner will be teaching an Oil Workshop at Artist s Showplace January 19-21, 2016
3 GETTING TO KNOW YOU Personal Art History of RCAS Members Jones (Jonesy) McConnell Jonesy retired five years ago from his practice as a Dallas-based commercial architect for 38 years. As a self-taught artist, he usually concentrates on producing realistic watercolor paintings. He is a longtime member and past president of Richardson Civic Art Society, a Life Member of Southwestern Watercolor Society and former past President. Jonesy is also the SWS Delegate to Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. Jonesy started drawing in junior high, did a little watercolor in college as part of the architectural curriculum, but mainly learned by watching other artists demo, and just trying to paint. ( The first 500 paintings are usually the hardest, and then it gets a little easier! ) Jonesy is a native Texan, moved to Richardson with his parents in 1954, graduated from RHS in 1963, and then from Texas Tech University in 1973.after a four year stint as a technical illustrator in the US Air Force. ( Proving the pen is mightier than the sword! ) Besides watercolors he likes to do photography, pen & ink sketching, cartoons, set design and construction. Jonesy and his wife of 48 years love to travel...both locally and worldwide, collecting subject matter for his paintings and sketching. A sketch book is a universal language for those of us who speak no other second language. His other interests include designing, reading fiction, singing, constantly telling jokes!, scuba diving, working out.enjoying his five grandchildren and at age 71 perhaps a little napping. CRITIQUE CORNER Bring your Work in Progress in at 6:00pm or just come to watch We have an RCAS member "discussion leader" to facilitate comments. All artists love a conversation about art!! So be a person in need of critique on a work OR just an interested participant. Remember, we're all still learnin' and need positive suggestions, even the experienced artists. Join the group and bring a painting (only one, please) Tuesday, October 16th at 6:00pm to the Critique Corner. I then looked for originality in subject matter, handling of medium or a unique point of view. Proficiency in technique was the third category followed by composition. After four rounds I had determined most awards, but several ties remained. hese I resolved by comparing the works and making a subjective choice between them. The four categories were impact, originality, proficiency and composition, with no single category given more weight than another. The process took about two hours. JUROR; WALT DAVIS

6 Message from the President Pat Fekete In November, I try to think about all of the many blessings that I have. I also try to reflect on what I really want to do in the coming year and begin making plans. RCAS has made significant changes over the past two years that we can count as blessings, but we also need to step back and do some planning as to where we want to go in the future years. The City of Richardson, through the Richardson Cultural Arts Council, has given us a vote of confidence by increasing the grant that we just received. With it go expectations that RCAS will continue to grow its place in the community in the future. As an all-volunteer organization, how far can we take it? How fast? We have added additional venues for our artists to exhibit their paintings in the two recreation centers. This amounts to additional shows even though they are not judged. Each takes time and work from our volunteers.. Each takes time and work from our volunteers. In the process, we have worked with the City of Richardson to clarify our liability and responsibilities because we utilize the Richardson Library, Eisemann Center, Huffhines Recreation Center, and Heights Recreation Center on an on-going basis. It takes discipline, time and effort to make sure that all the paperwork is completed for each of the shows that we mount. We are very blessed to have the venues for our artists to exhibit as well as the support of the grantors. We are most grateful to our community. Let us give a special thanks as well to all the volunteers that give time, talent and treasure to RCAS. Because of you, RCAS is thriving. Thank you for your constant help and support. Sincerely, Pat Richardson Civic Art Society P.O. Box Richardson, TX January Meeting Nancy Medina Oils
