1 This Project is funded in part by the City of Richardson through the Richardson Arts Commission Volume 51 Issue 4 Christina Yielding Painting on Wood March 20, :30-8:45 PM Richardson Public Library Christina is an abstract artist whose passion for painting has grown from a hobby to a career but she says Painting Live gives me my inspiration and energy to be the Artist I am today. She has been painting for about 15 years but has only considered herself to be an Artist for the last 5 years. People always ask how she got where she is and if her parents were an influence on her. She believes not having any influences on her path has driven her to succeed, no matter how hard it would be. Five years ago, she packed up her life in Dallas, put her belongings in storage and drove to Bourne, TX, near San Antonio, for the summer to help her aunt and uncle. That summer she spent most of her days painting and dreaming about where she would like to be in 10 years. One day she was driving to get supplies and noticed people on the side of the road selling fruit. Cars were pulling over and buying the fruit, right there, on the side of the road, so she thought I can do that with my art. She loaded up her truck with her art, paints and a single tarp. She headed back, drove 5 miles past the fruit people, pulled over, opened the trunk, grabbed her art, put her tarp on the ground with a blank board and started painting. Before she knew it 6 or 7 cars pulled over, single file, and a small crowd of strangers were standing around watching. She will never forget the courage it took to do that all by herself and the inspiration she got from the people who had stopped. Today, 5 years into the 10-year dream, she is right where She DREAMED she would be. The real joy she gets from her art is not selling it, it is creating it, while people stand around and watch. She gets her energy from the crowd. She paints solely on wood, with no paint brushes; her technique is crafted using a variety of scrapers and she custom builds each frame around every piece. The accomplishment she feels, that comes from the sweat and tears of cutting, nailing, and sanding each frame before the paint ever touches it, is too much to put into words. Once the frames are built, she gets to tune in and let the energy flow. Her best work comes from painting live and meeting new people, who through her art become her clients and friends. 1

2 FEBRUARY DEMONSTRATION Bev Boren Watercolor The meeting started a bit late, Bev was caught in traffic due to the weather. So she walked in the door about 6:50, and the audience of 32 was in full attention. She paints very fast, and sketched out a scene that she has done many times before. She left a huge white area untouched, as it was a snow scene. She paints quickly, not too much detail at all. She also uses three bottles of spray-watercolor, (blue, yellow, and red) to create a sort of splashed, abstract effect. She also used masking tape over wet areas of the trees to create a white aspen tree bark. A huge tip that she gave was cropping; you are not committed to framing your entire painting. Many times she just uses a small portion or section of a painting. 2

3 GETTING TO KNOW YOU Personal Art History of RCAS Members Geri McCleskey s unique contemporary acrylic paintings of flowing colors are inspired from her love of nature. Although most of her work is not necessarily subject oriented, it has the feel of sand, sky and water movement. Many applications of paint are used to achieve this spacious airy look that is not evident by the overall effect of clear concise color. Geri graduated from The University of North Texas in 1973 with a BFA Degree in Painting and Drawing; Nature, being her Portfolio subject of her final semester of Drawing. Other career related interests included Printmaking and Darkroom Photography. Creating art and beauty, with God s help and love displays her garden and landscape abilities. Other than painting, the actual process of working outside in the elements creates great happiness and therapy for her as she created her arboretum like canopy. While raising her two girls, sewing, and keeping a busy home, she worked part-time in her husband s Accounting Business. After putting her own passion on hold, both girls still in school, she enrolled in North Texas State University in Denton and received her long awaited Art Degree. Geri is most happy with family, home, church, friends, and a wonderful husband of 66 years who has been very supportive of her passion and love of Art throughout the years. She has participated in many juried exhibitions, one woman shows, group shows, and won awards in the Texas and California area. Heights Recreation Center - Solo Show by Jan Lorine Matthews Huffhines Recreation Center Show up until June 5th A new exhibit by seven of our members went up at the Huffhines Recreation Center. The center is located on Plano Road between Arapaho and Belt Line Here in Richardson. Mickey Archer, Karen Harris, Toni Wengler, Tom Jordon, Jones C. McConnell, Jr., Janice Hamilton and lari Howard all hung work, and as you can see, some very strong partings are on display. The exhibit will be up until June 5th, so drop by and see what your friend have been up to. 5

Don't forget to visit the third floor of the Library to enjoy the kid's creativity in the Rosemary Cheney Memorial Show. Myron Stennett, the RISD Visual Arts Coordinator, and our own Susan Martin as Chair have hung a wonderful display of our youngest artists' work. Each Elementary School in RISD is represented.
