1 This Project is funded in part by the City of Richardson through the Richardson Arts Commission Volume 41, Issue 1 September 2015 Priscilla Krejci Mixed Media (Ink & Watercolor) September 15, :30-8:45 PM Richardson Public Library Priscilla Krejci, originally from Long Island, New York, has lived in Texas for last 30 years and resides in Allen. She pursued a career as a registered nurse and kept artistic endeavors secondary until painting consumed more and more of her time. Her work is mainly impressionistic and includes a variety of subject matter influenced by travels at home and abroad, everyday life in Texas, and her experiences in nursing. Priscilla is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, Southwestern Watercolor Society, and the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. Her work has been selected in regional, national, and international shows, including Rocky Mountain Watermedia Exhibition, American Watercolor Society, International Watercolor Exhibition - Nigata, Japan, Watercolor USA and Watercolor Without Boundaries Texas-Italy and local Texas exhibitions. Her work has been included in the books; Best of Watercolor - Painting Composition, Best of Watercolor - Painting Light and Shadow, and People in Watercolor, and the 2001 and 2004 summer issue of "International Artist".
2 MAY DEMONSTRATION JANE JONES EXPERIMENTAL ACRYLIC Jane Jones admitted she has always challenged herself to try something new. At our May meeting she educated us about an art form we do not usually see demonstrated. It uses acrylic paints. It is experimental and non-representational, and by her own admission, a difficult way to paint. The first thing you do to the paper ((Aquarius11) is to coat it twice with a mixture of 1/4 part water and 3/4 part gloss medium or matte medium. Once dry, glaze it with a transparent color. Once applied, you can achieve a light shape by putting down a piece of paper towel and rolling a brayer over it. When dry, you can glaze with another color, either an opposite color on the color scale or choose a cold color versus a warm color. You may glaze over and over again, using opposites of what you last applied or analogous colors. While each layer is wet, spray with alcohol. In between layers stamp with bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard, handmade stamps, etc. using white gesso. Make a mixture of 1/2 water and 1/2 gesso. Use blue painters tape and mark off a good shape; can be a cruciform, grid or any structure to preserve the darker values. Apply this mixture where you want your lights, not pure whites though. Do not let dry at this point, but spritz with alcohol for texture in your lights. You can stamp again with your stamps to create interesting edges where the white mixture hits the darker values. You can use a sponge brayer to join the lighter values with the darker values as a gradation of values. She uses pure white gesso for the lights and black gesso for the darks. Everything should connect visually. Seal the painting after 4-5 layers of acrylics with 1/2 gloss medium and 1/2 water. You can also use watercolor pencils or crayons. You can wash them off if necessary, since there is a medium on the paper. Put medium on again for a richer color. You can seal it in between layers; this will protect the under painting. If you use canvas, use 40% polymer gloss varnish, 40% matte medium and 20% distilled water to seal it. At your focal point put your darkest value against the lightest value. Always work towards a contrast of value, color intensity, size of shapes, texture and shape.
3 BEST OF SHOW SHOW Juror s Remarks I enjoyed judging the show, and I must say that selecting the winners was a very hard decision. My overall process for selecting the winners ultimately came down to the use of color harmony in the painting, compositions and the feeling the painting evoked in me. I also looked for playfulness and confidence within the artwork. The best art is always the art where there is a passion and that passion can be felt by the viewer. What a great selection of art! Art! And. t was an honor to judge the show. Water Media on Paper Christie Campo Ann Ramsey Award* MA - Mr J s Art and Frame Barbara Q. 6 Message from the President Pat Fekete Welcome back! September is an exciting month for RCAS! Your officers and chairs have planned a great year that starts NOW! Priscilla Krejci opens the year! Her lively painting demonstrations are filled with wit and wisdom. In October, Walt Davis, another popular regional artist, will not only do a demonstration, but also be the guest artist for a three-day RCAS workshop. Equally exciting, top-notch artists are scheduled to keep the energy going throughout the year and provide ideas for all of us. Topping the excitement is RCAS s 50 th Anniversary of the founding next spring. The Sketchpad, website, and Facebook page will be filled with information about events, news, and members. I hope that you will plan to come and be a part of this special year! RCAS is as good as its membership makes it. We have great members that volunteer to help, but we can always use extra hands and help. By getting involved, you help strengthen and carry on the organization, hopefully for another 50 years!
