1 Volume 44, Issue 3 November, The Sketchpad This project is funded in part by the City of Richardson through the Richardson Art Commission Cecy Turner, Oils Cecy Turner, Oils A native Dallasite, Cecy Turner received her formal art training at Vanderbilt University and the University of North Texas, followed by workshops by over 50 professional artists from across the nation. She is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society, Southwestern Watercolor Society, Women Artists of the West, Outdoor Painters Society, Plein Art Artists Colorado, Associated Creative Artists and Texas and Neighbors and has been a popular lecturer, teacher, juror and demonstrator since Versatile in both watercolor and oils, she has designed cards and calendars for numerous national greeting card companies. Her paintings will be featured in the February 2010 issue of Watercolor Magazine. Summer Reflections at Bear Lake Artist s Statement: Texture and the effects of light and shadow have become important elements in my paintings. I am fascinated with the glow of reflected light on various surfaces. Painting on location on a regular basis has opened many doors for me. I cannot improve nature, but I can rearrange and simplify it to correspond to what I feel. Traveling abroad has opened up new vistas of color and texture for me. I paint to convey the enjoyment and excitement of what I see. Cecy s Demo November 17th RCAS Meeting Richardson Library Basement 6:45 PM to 8:45 PM Getting Ready for Fall
2 Volume 44, Issue 3 November, Winners of the Picture of the Month are listed left to right: 1st place: Cecy Turner, oil, Fall Mood at Hermit Park 2nd Place: Linda Yeager, water media, Evening in Gotland 3rd Place: Karin Michele Anderson, watercolor, Feeding Time November Picture of the Month A big THANKS to Asel Art for their continued support of RCAS. Asel has provided our 1st and 2nd place awards for many, many years, and their support has been invaluable. Our 3rd place award will be provided this year by RCAS. Again, we had a wonderful variety of works by our members in October and had some outstanding winners. Here s looking forward to next month s show. Chairpersons Liza Alderson and Suzanne Berry Deadline for December Sketchpad November 28th Deadline for January Sketchpad December 30th Kudos for Members Sandra Yeo on entry into El Dia de los Muertos at White Rock Lake Bathhouse, Oh Mama, You Look So Good, acrylic on canvas. The show runs into mid-november. Correction of Jones McConnell for entries into the Western Federation Watercolor Show due to him on November 15th, jmcconnell@hharchitects.com Ted Houston on swift recovery from back surgery. Note that he and Caren are at phone number. October Demo - Janice Hamilton - Pastels Member Janice Hamilton demonstrated pastels with a large paper canvas and a rural scene. She covered the various types and manufacturers of pastels, noting the Sennelier ones are her favorites and why. She stressed that the canvas was larger than time would allow to finish it but would work on showing how the drawing builds slowly after the initial layers. As she worked, she noted the framing of pastels with glass vs plexiglass. Plexiglass against pastel generates electricity when rubbed, even if only for household dusting purposes. The electricity will pull the pastel off the canvas that will have to be redone to correct the loss of the pastel grains. The picture on the right is not complete but shows the highlights of merging pastels to build the lovely color effects as Janice worked on it.
3 Volume 44, Issue 3 November, PARTS OF THE WHOLE PANELS, PANELS, PANELS!! This month of November I am making a very Large Appeal to you as a member to take ownership of The New Show Panels Project. Let's All do what we can. Come to the Meeting on November 17 with your contribution. That's what's going on this month. Think how great it will look to have the new panels for the Young People's Show in January. As we go to press members have purchased 6 panels. Thank you, Thank you, good and loyal RCAS Members. Speaking of the Young People's SS, we need a new Chairman for that show. Our wonderful volunteer's father has had a stroke and she has become his main caregiver. We all love the "Young Peeps" Show (peeps is the new slang for "people"). The weekend of January will need many hands completing tasks plus a leader to assign duties. The first mailing has gone out. There is another mailing for the first of December. Easy breezy. January is the briefly busy time. Then you as chairperson have the joyous experience of passing out the ribbons and Scholarships. Think about how many lives we touch, the ones we change and the encouragement we give our Richardson young artists. RISD Middle School artists have requested our help with a Show similar to the Elementary School Rosemary Cheney Show. How could we say No? It will go up in May while we are at the Eisemann. The teachers and Kay Savay will curate. Congratulations to Carol Powell for organizing and putting up the beautiful Membership Show. Kudos to everyone. From my observations, we are quite a talented community of artists. You inspire me, teach me and encourage me. Make time to encourage yourself by taking it in. Panels, Panels, Panels again! How to contribute: Suggested amounts are listed below, mail contribution to Treasurer, Dick Powell, or bring your check to the meeting in an envelope with instructions for the name plaque; 3 lines per panel. Now is the time. Report from the Richardson Arts Commission: RCAS has been granted $10,500 for operating expenses and awards to artists. Operating expenses include financing 6 shows a year, 9 visiting artists at meetings, workshop rentals, publicity and printing. The RCAS Board has voted to create an Award of Excellence in the Regional Show this May. Barbara McNutt Ad Rates for Sketchpad Business card size $25 3 X 3 $40 1/3 page $50 ½ page $75 Full page $100 To Sponsor Art Show Panels Individual Sponsorship $ Sponsors $ Sponsors $ Sponsors $ Send checks to Dick Powell Each panel has a metal plaque with3 lines of text available per panel for dedication. 6 Volume 44, Issue 3 November, Note to Artists We are being dragged, kicking and screaming, in some cases, into the 21st Century. If you are watching the newsletters of various art organizations, more and more of them are going to entries into their various shows being listed solely on their internet sites. Much as many of you don t like the internet, it is a fact of life and may, indeed, cause you to miss out on one of your yearly pleasures. Almost all the junior colleges have courses in use of the internet for us Seniors at a nominal fee. The libraries offer classes as well, many free, and have computer terminals open for general use to send in resumes, pull off forms, etc., so a large outlay for equipment isn t necessary. how to use it is! But the knowledge of Mr J s Framing and Gallery Customized Framing to Suit Every Artist s Needs 45 Years of Service CHANGE IN SITE OF February Meeting Due to early voting in the primary elections, RCAS will meet in the Parks Room in the City Hall/Civic Center for February, 2010 meeting only. Artist s Showplace Coit Road, #230, Dallas, TX Gallery hours: 10AM to 6PM, Tues.-Sat. Don't forget to check our Class Schedules for new classes and workshops!
