1 Judge of Awards Statement 5th Annual Members Awards Exhibit August 26th - September 16th, 2002 St. Peter's Community and Arts Center St. Peter's, Missouri A teacher once told me that when you have finished a painting, it should look like no struggle was involved in its making. Not an easy task in any media and especially not in watercolor. This idea really addresses how capably the artist contrives for the viewer to perceive an artwork and travel into its essence. I feel this transport of the viewer into the realm of the image should be instantaneous and seamless. Put another way, we should be convinced by the world the artist conjures up, not distracted by their method or gimmicky techniques. All the works selected for awards share certain attitudes that I believe are important. I responded to watercolors that conveyed the fluidity of this unique medium, a convincing sense of spatiality and sophistication in achieving a variety of contour edges (i.e. hard outlines are not found around every shape). Also compelling was an expressiveness that appeared genuine as opposed to forced. These works exhibited a simplicity of image and/or composition in spite of any attendant details-that gave them strength and dynamism. Confidence was another quality that gave these images their power. Lastly, each painting singled out for notice had a sensibility that was palpable and a point of view that was personal, as opposed to tired clichés. I was impressed by the diversity and ambition of the entire exhibit, including non-prize winners. Overall, of special notice was a clarity of color (no mud!). And a sensitivity to light. Also obvious in all the entries was a commitment to investigating and mastering the watercolor medium. Congratulations to everyone who participated. - Margaret Keller Margaret Keller is an artist based in St. Louis. She became a signature member of the National Watercolor Society at age 29, as well as a signature member of the Midwest Watercolor Society. Her watercolors have been included in their national tours as well as Watercolor USA. The Gwenda Jay/Addington Gallery in Chicago s main gallery district has selected her for a one-person exhibition to kick off the opening of the fall gallery season September 13, This new series of oil paintings explores the way we perceive nature. Ms. Keller also writes art criticism for the St. Louis Post- Dispatch and the national art magazine published out of Chicago, the New Art Examiner. Currently, she is teaches fulltime at Washington University School of Art. Rich Brooks is the Director of Cultural Affairs for the City of St. Peter s. In this capacity he selected the Director s Choice award winner in this show. Rich stated, The combination of power and absolute strength in color captured my attention in View From The Balcony.
