The past two years I have also been able to be the Year Book Advisor at the Calvary Christian School. I have also been able to teach private lessons over the last few years. On occasion I have also had the opportunity to teach specials with elementary school students. Fall of 2013 taught a Intro to drawing class for the Olli program through the Granite State College, North Conway, NH. Creative Work I have been working independently out of my studio for the last 7 years. During this time I have concentrated mainly on landscapes. Along with numerous plein air paintings, large in studio paintings have been created using studies, sketches, and personal photographs. Plein air painting and keeping a watercolor journal allows me to record my experiences along with the beauty of an area. Over the past years I have started to paint the places I have enjoyed and admired over the years forming a catalog of images of my travels and experiences. One of the collections I have been working on is called "Familiar Old Friends". In this collection are paintings of the area in my back yard. I have spent the last twelve plus winters exploring this amazing place. It has been a place of escape and enjoyment for me that has allowed me to grow as I study the world around me. It is a place that is always refreshing to revisit winter after winter and day after day. It has been a true friend filled with warm memories. I try to convey the love and appreciation I have for this area and other areas like it through my paintings.
3 Artist Statement During the artist in residency at the Curious George Cottage I will utilize the time by working on illustrations for a children's story I have written entitled, "Echo the Bears Great Big Adventure!" Along with working on the illustrations for this story I will spend time plein air painting. I draw from the world around me for inspiration not only for my paintings, but also for writing children's stories. Plein air painting is an important part of this process. It captures the world around us at a specific time and place. The time of day and the weather can play a major part in what is captured in a painting. I feel it is important to capture the world around us to keep a record for future generations. We look back today at the paintings created by artists of the past and it gives a window into history. These artists recorded history as it happened, preserving it for us. They gave us a view of what life was like during their time era, as well as, what their world looked liked. I hope to do the same through my plein air paintings of the area. The world we live in is continually changing much faster than most of us are comfortable with. The story I hope to illustrate during this residency, "Echo The Bears Great Big Adventure!," was inspired by my niece when she came for a visit and forgot her black bear stuffed animal named Echo. My mom and I were leaving for a backpacking trip to the Bonds in the White Mountains of New Hampshire the following day. We decided to bring Echo the Bear with us for a mascot. When we returned we told my niece about the great adventure Echo the Bear had been on. From the original retelling of the our trip this children's story began to take form. Much of the ground work for this story is already well on its way to being completed. This includes the story boards and a few of the final illustrations. "Echo The Bears Great Big Adventure!" will be a 25 page story with full color illustrations on every page. The illustrations visually tell the story while the text conveys the excitement of the trip through Echo's perspective. The illustrations will be completed with watercolors on cold pressed watercolor paper. I enjoy using the happenings of real life as an inspiration for writing. Through children's stories I hope to spark an interest for the arts and the outdoors in the lives of children. Growing up in New Hampshire my summers were filled with camping and hiking. This left strong roots of passion for the area in my life that I express through my artwork. Each day is an adventure and another opportunity to be inspired by the world around us.
4 Public Program essica-fligg-artist. blogspot. com The public program is a workshop on watercolor joumaling. This will be geared towards teens and adults. We will start out making our own watercolor journals. This activity will not only teach the basics in watercolor sketching, but also give an introduction to book making and binding. These journals are made out of good quality heavy watercolor paper to allow painting and writing on both sides of a page. They are hand sewn with cotton thread and bees wax. The covers are made out of recycled cardboard and scrap pieces of colorful paper. Once these journals are assembled we will take time to discuss the materials we will be using outdoors and learn the basics of watercolor mixing. Once everyone is ready, with journals in hand, we will head out on a hike/nature walk. We will stop along the way to sketch in our journals and write descriptions of what we see. When we return we will share our journals along with a discussion of what we have learned. These journals are not only a good way to collect visual information for the artist, but also for the writer or poet. Summary of Teaching and Interacting with the Public: Over the past six years I have attended many art festivals throughout New Hampshire and Maine. At each one of these shows I interact with the public. I discuss my work, style, choice of medium, and answer various questions obtaining to my work and the area. In the fall of 2013 I taught an Intro to Drawing Class for the Olli program through the Granite State College in North Conway, NH. I also teach private art lessons. The spring of opened a private teaching studio where I teach workshops, as well as, individual art lessons.
5 School Program School program: This program will be for grades K-S'"^ and will use a children's story that I have written and illustrated called, "Susie's Painting Adventure." This story introduces children to painting and color mixing in a fun way, using Susie and her painting companion Rufiis. After the story is read there are a few activity's that go along with it. Each child will make their own color wheel and practice mixing colors. Then they will create their own painting of a favorite place or their favorite animal. At the end they will be rewarded with a sticker and a coloring page of the characters from the story. Summery Working In Schools: For the past three years I have taught a high school art class and for the last two years a yearbook class at the Calvary Christian School in Plymouth, New Hampshire. During this time I have also occasionally done specials with art for the elementary students. This included reading and completing the projects from "Susie's Painting Adventure!" with the graders. In the school year I worked once a week with the 5* and 6* graders on various art projects.
