CALENDAR Tall Timbers Exhibitions Next show opening March 11, 2018 This year's exhibition will be juried by Jaimie Cordero, a wonderful artist and workshop instructor who is nationally known. Jaimie will be teaching a workshop here in Tallahassee on May We are looking forward to learning from her. 2 2 Nina Freeman to Demo for March Meeting Sunday, March 18, the Tallahassee Watercolor Society meeting will feature former society president Nina Freeman in a program on creating monoprints with gouache. She will demonstrate a simple procedure for using opaque watercolor, i.e. gouache to create a oneof a kind print. Nina is currently a painting instructor and is wellqualified to answer your questions on this and other techniques. We will be doing Artist's Dialogue at our regular meetings for a while. For the first fifteen minutes or so, we will discuss paintings that members bring in for help and crititique. If you have a painting that you would like help with, please bring it along and we will do as many as we have time for. The April program will be announced next month, the date is Sunday, April 15, Look for an eblast next month for more. Juanita says there was a very interesting array of animals and interpretations in this exhibit. Please join us at 2 to 4pm and meet the artists. The Beadel House is just off Hwy. 12 in northern Leon County in the Tall Timbers research center. Florida Watercolor Society Traveling Exhibition From January 12 to March 24, the Gadsden Art Center has been hosting the traveling 2017 Watercolor Exhibition featuring the Best of Show by our own Dean Mitchell shown at right. Juror, Iain Stewart, said of this painting, Viewing Carrie Mae at 20 feet reveals an abstract; at 10, the figure becomes obvious; at five, the jewels come alive; and at one, I could sit for some time looking at brushstrokes, edge control, and all the facets that make this one to be walked around and enjoyed again and again. Carrie Mae Carrie Mae, herself was present and honored at this Florida Watercolor Society 46th Annual Traveling Exhibition opening and reception which was well-attended by many of our local watercolorist and society members. There is still time to go to Quincy and visit the Sara May Love Gallery to see this outstanding exhibition. 3 3 Notes from exhibitions around town Here's a message from Marty Holland, our coordinator for the art that TaWS exhibits in the Cancer Center at the TMH complex. I'd like to thank the participating artists for working with the Cancer Center in providing an uplifting exhibition for the patients and staff. Everytime we change our exhibit we get numerous folks stopping to look and they always comment on the submissions, and sometimes they purchase them, as well. I hope everyone will think of submitting artwork for the next change out in the spring. It really has a positive impact on people during a trying time. As usual, an eblast will go out when it is time to submit your painting images from which the center's staff will select. If you have questions, contact Marty at Holland.Marty@gmail. These paintings do not have to be your most recent, but they should be images that keep the viewers in mind. Happy painting! Jenny Lange who has recently taken over the TMH Rehab Center exhibitions from Tonya Toole, is conducting the March change out soon. She would like to have images by March 9, Please her with your name, address, title of each painting with a price, to jenlange@comcast.net. The change out date is March 16, from 3 to 5pm where you can pick up your November painting if you have one there and drop off paintings if you are accepted for the new exhibit. TMH Rehab is at 1609 Medical Drive. TaWS members Suzanna Winton and her mother Kay Cromartie are sponsoring a Landscape in Oils workshop with Steven Walker on March 23-24, It will be held in the Train Depot in Ochlochnee, Georgia at the cost of $200. For more information check with Suzanna at wintonsa@aol.com Nina Freeman will be continuing her art instruction at LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts. Her Watercolor class will again be on Tuesday Mornings, 10am to noon. Notes from our January meeting Amanda Karioth Thompson, COCA liason extraodinaire, presented our first meeting of the year with tips on preparing for and hanging a show. She arranges and keeps track of three public spaces and the permanent collections in municipal buildings here in Tallahassee. She is responsible for hanging and is more than qualified to advise on preparing and installing exhibitions. Her tips on preparing your own work for a show includes: Start by reading the prospectus carefully to know a particular organization's requirements which can vary from group to group. The framing you use must accommodate to the venue and its hanging system, otherwise you might be disqualified after acceptance. Sturdy wire on the back of your frame for hanging is often your best option. Frame choice can make a picture, but is often proscribed by the prospectus, so check carefully and choose within your limits. Make it clean, professional and safe while fitting the style and size of the picture. If possible, make the glass a non-glare plexi-glass which is available online or locally at Plastics Unlimited. 4 4 Scenes from the February meeting After telling us that LeMoyne is changing its name to LEMOYNE ARTS, Ann Kozeliski, the director of LeMoyne presented a fascinating program on Sumie painting which she has studied for a number of years. Below are some pictures of the amazing array of brushes and materials used in the tradition. The brushs were fabulous. Demonstration of one of the four basic strokes. TaWS members try their hand.
