Vickie will demonstrate her collage technique focusing on an animal. Born and raised in the Los Angeles area, Vickie grew up between the trifecta of locations, the ocean, the mountains/snow and desert. She has been married for 53 years to her high school sweetheart and has been blessed with two children and seven grandchildren. Vickie has been painting most of her life, winning her first prize for watercolor at the age of 9. She taught watercolor for 20 years, after a career of teaching high school mathematics. Her mentor, Tom Fong, taught her to paint with freer brush strokes and larger brushes. I like to paint in a variety of styles. It is chartered by the City of Torrance in cooperation with the Cultural Services Division of the Community Services Department. Meetings are held regularly on the second Tuesday of the month. 2 2 teaching the medium of watercolor for so long, says Vickie. I wanted to bring new ideas and new techniques to my students and challenge them to push outside of their comfort levels. Vickie s favorite subjects change from one series to the next, but her Pipes series is her favorite so far. She enjoys the challenge of painting perspectives, circles becoming ellipses, shadows leading the eye around the pipes, the geometric challenge that the pipes especially present. Her pipes have become so popular that now people send her photos of pipes from all over in hopes she will choose theirs as her next painting. Her collages have been so successful that she was accepted into the Collage Artists of America and her work has been highlighted in Cheap Joe s 2017 reference catalog. Vickie exhibits in many local and national shows and has won many awards, including several Best in Shows. President s Report Well, the year is rapidly running to a close. Is it just me, or has everything sped up? One thing that has hasn t sped up is our exit from the Lexus show. I know that you received the about keeping our work there until November third. I thought I would elaborate a bit more on what happened. The reason that we went earlier than expected was that Lexus is planning a significant renovation and expected that we would lose out on this year s show because of it. Thankfully, TAG members who belonged to the group who were scheduled to go in before us were able to influence their groups to go in for half of their allotted time, and give TAG the remainder. As it often turns out when dealing with building approvals, the plans were not approved (and have yet to be), so we were asked to stay until the November 3 rd date. Moreover, there is a group going in after us. What does all of this mean for next year? Who knows? I have spoken to Jody about this, and offered suggestions, but the two big questions that nobody seems to have an answer for are: when is the construction going to be finished, and what, if any, space will be allocated for display of artwork? We ll keep you posted when we hear anything at all. Recently the Board went through a review of the bylaws for TAG. We cleaned up and clarified some of the language. Sylvia is going to send out a copy of the bylaws for every TAG member, and we will ask for a floor vote for approval from the membership at the October general TAG meeting. So please look for that, and read it, so you will know what you are voting on.

3 3 Two more quick things: first, take in for the TAG/Destination: Art joint show at the Women s Club will be October 2 nd to October 10 th. You may drop off paintings at Destination: Art. There will be a box outside my studio with sign in information, and labels. The address is 1815 West 213 th Street. Public hours are Thursday through Sunday, You can also call to see if anyone will be around on any other day. Remember, the paintings have to be VIEWS OF TORRANCE! Finally, a new year is rolling around, and we have some TAG vacancies to fill for We are looking for c a n d i d a t es for P r e s i d e n t, Corresponding Secretary and Competition Chair. Also we have a Facebook page that hasn t really been tended to since Karen s passing, so we are looking to create a social media chair to handle that. Tuition includes all materials and a silk scarf. Do it Again and Again - in Pastels Mike Ishikawa, Sat. November 3, $85 Mike will provide photos of landscapes and participants will choose one. They will start with a 6X9 and have 1 hr to complete, then they will do an 8X10 and 2hrs to complete. How to Paint Atmospheric Watercolors Frank Eber, January 11-13, $325 Learn how to paint luminous watercolors by manipulating tonal values, color and edge. Frank will share advanced painting techniques to create atmosphere, balance and unity in your work. Alan Flattmann Pastel Workshop, March 1-3, $375. Mr. Flattmann is author of the Art of Pastel Painting, which is considered by many as the definitive guide to pastels.
