1 President s Message Let s not talk about the weather enough already! I hope everyone enjoyed the recent Family Day holiday and was able to enjoy time together with loved ones. There are always lots of interesting things happening in the world of art. I was excited to learn recently that a woman has been named as the new director for the National Gallery of Canada the first woman to lead this organization in 20 years. I was also interested to read that there is a move afoot to create an Artist Laureate position in Canada. Unfortunately the bill was defeated in our national parliament but the senator responsible for this initiative is planning to reintroduce the bill soon. Let s hope it has more success next time. Registration for our Spring classes has just opened up so check out our website and sign up for one or more of the many sessions we are offering. 4 From the Editor s Desk Business Cards That Drive Art Sales - by Dave Geada, CMO, FASO One of the most important tools in the artist marketing toolkit is your business card. A professional looking business card, when executed properly, can: Help differentiate you from your competition Help collectors remember who you are Encourage collectors to take important steps to keep in touch Help collectors spread the word about you and your art In order to accomplish these objects, a business card must accomplish two important objectives: It has to be remarkable in some way. The more remarkable, the more likely people are going to remember you and share your card with others It must specify a clear action that you want the receiver to take. Some examples include: Checking out your artwork on your website Signing up for your newsletter on your website Following you on social media Why Remarkable? A business card is often the very first thing that you will ever give a collector. In essence, it's the first example they'll receive of something that you created. Think about that for a second. With so much hinging on that first impression, I am always surprised by how many artists either don't have business cards or opt for a generic business card that looks no different than one you might get from a lawyer or a salesperson. Don't cut corners on this important first impression. Instead, apply the same artistic creativity to your business card that you do to other aspects of your business. When it comes making your business card remarkable, here are some examples to help get your creative juices flowing: Use a heavier card stock. Receiving a business card is a tactile experience. Using heavier card stock is a subtle but effective way of setting your business card apart from the pack. Use a unique texture. Texture is another way to give your business cards some added punch, and these days there are a lot of options to choose from. Use a unique shape. Although a bit more expensive, die cut business cards offer you the option of giving your business card a unique shape that's only limited by your imagination. Use a striking font. There are tons of fonts to choose from, so take your time and pick one that really speaks to your brand as an artist. Use a bold background color. Also, avoid using a fancy watermark or a background image on the front of your card. That will make it harder to read. Just stick to a plain colored background of your choice. Make sure your business card is designed to look like your website. Consistent branding between your business card and your website is really important. It's one hint to a collector that they've reached the right website. If your business card and website look totally different, collectors are much more likely to bounce off of your website because they think they've reached the wrong place. What to Put on the Front of Your Business Card So now that you've got some ideas for making your business card remarkable, let's cover what you should put on your card. Let's start with the front of your card: Cont d

For example: Fine Artist, OPAM Your address and phone number. I suggest you put both on one line separated by the pipe symbol like this: ###-###-#### name@ address.com Website address with a specific call to action. Too often artists just put their web address on their card without asking collectors to take a specific action. Make sure that you include a specific call to action that you want them to take. Here are a few examples: o Check out my art at o Sign up for my newsletter at o o View my workshops at Facebook profile with a call to action to follow you. Something like this works well: Follow me on Facebook at What to Put on the Back of Your Business Card I highly suggest that you get two-side business cards, and that you use the back of your card to provide examples of your best work. Many printers allow you to order sets of business cards that have up to four different backs, which is plenty to provide collectors with a sense of your range as an artist. Pick up to four of your best works, and make sure that you include the name of your work, size and medium. Also, be intentional about which cards you hand out and to whom. What to Do with Your Business Cards Now that you've got a killer business card that is remarkable and chock full of all the right information and calls to action, let's talk about how to leverage your business cards in the real world to help you drive sales. Be generous with your business cards. Hand them out to anyone that you meet who shows genuine interest in you and your art. If they mention someone else who would love your artwork, be sure to give them an extra card for their friend. Hand your business card right-side up. By right side up, I mean make sure that it's right-side up from the perspective of the person that you are handing your card to. Point out your calls to action. Make sure that you mention your two calls to action (i.e. visit my website and Facebook) when you hand your card. This will help reinforce that there's something that you want them to do after your meeting. Show them your artwork on the back of your card. Make sure that you tell them the story of this piece and why it's representative of your work. I hope you found this article helpful. Remember, apply the principles that I've outlined and your own creativity and you'll be well on your way to creating an amazing business card that will turn heads and drive qualified collectors into your marketing funnel.
