2 Welcome to the Artists Society of Canberra s SUMMER ART EXPERIENCE Three Master Class tutors specially for advanced students plus ten distinguished tutors for all skill levels are offering a wide range of subject matter in the air-conditioned comfort of the Canberra College, 2 Launceston Street, Phillip ACT. There is ample free parking at the venue as well as access for people with a disability. ASOC is living up to its reputation for delivering workshops in an atmosphere of friendship, fun and social interaction. This year we pay a special tribute to an ASOC Life Member and founder of ASOC s SAE, Mr David Hatton, who organised the first of these annual events in Workshops will run from 9:00am to 5:00pm daily (unless otherwise specified by the tutor) with breaks for morning and afternoon teas, which are provided free at nearby self-service tea stations. The lunch break will be one hour. Participants may wish to bring their own lunch to enjoy with friends in the garden or visit the nearby Hellenic Club or cafes in the Woden Shopping Centre. Class sizes are limited, so book now. For your convenience, an Eckersley s Shop will be on site before and after the workshops and during the tea and lunch breaks. Our tutors stay at The Statesman Hotel/Motel, Curtin. Billets may be available for out-of-state participants. 2

Materials You will need to bring your own art materials, equipment and easel. You can pre-order your art needs in advance from Eckersleys, 42 Mort Street, Braddon (telephone ) and collect them on the first day after signing in at 8.30am Monday 8 January at the main entrance foyer of the Canberra College. Cancellation and Refunds Participants who cancel or withdraw in writing prior to 30 November 2017 will receive a full refund less a $50 administration fee. No refunds for withdrawals will be given after that date unless your place can be filled. If your workshop is cancelled you will be notified personally by telephone and given an option to transfer to another workshop or receive a full refund. Membership of ASOC visit ASOC is a community organisation. Membership is open to participants aged 18 years and over. 3

The scope of Herman s work has ranged from dynamic industrial scenery to soft, draped Interiors and broad Australian landscapes, which indicates the creative, fearless nature of this unique artist. Environmental issues are of great concern to Herman and his love of the landscape reflects that In almost everything he paints. He produces paintings of strong design and powerful impact - every brushstroke vibrant and visible. 4

More specifically, you will gain an insight on how the techniques I use for my own work can be applied to botanical and small bird subjects of your own. Techniques will cover image transferring, essential watercolour techniques of washes, glazes and dry brushing, understanding colour and its use better, as well as exploring critical areas like redirecting issues and problem solving those aspects of your process that cause you trouble. My teaching approach aims to help students get on the right track, and to ultimately work independently, progressively, and most of all, to enjoy this wonderful painting process along the way. 6

In this workshop, you will learn about composition, colour, tone and textures. Using watercolours, and or acrylics, paper collage, inks, and oil pastels, we will work in a modern contemporary style. 20 Artists Society of Canberra Inc The Artists Society of Canberra Inc (ASOC) founded in 1927 is the oldest fine arts society in the ACT with approximately 300 members. Membership is open to anyone interested in or practising the visual arts. Weekly untutored daytime or evening workgroups, monthly social meetings with demonstrations and regular tutored workshops are held in our studio at M16 Artspace, Griffith, ACT. Plein-air and other excursions are organised during the year. Several exhibitions are hosted annually, the main ones being the ACT Catchment Art Prizes and the members Spring Art Competition and Exhibition. ASOC also provides members with opportunities to display and sell their works in various cafes and hospitals throughout Canberra. The Society produces a bi-monthly newsletter, provides regular updates, maintains a website, Facebook page and posts on Instagram, all aimed at keeping members and the public up-to-date with arts events in the region.
