Park Ph: Art Society of Strathcona County JUNE 2018 NEWSLETTER President s Message All the shows and workshops have been successful this spring and, we, as artists and members, must take a breather (except those involved yet in the Open Studio Tour!!). My personal thanks is extended to each and every member who gave of their time and effort to ensure that our Society was presented to the public in the best light possible. We welcome each and every new member and hope that you enjoy being a part of this busy Society. If you can, please participate in the fall activities in some way and you will make wonderful friends and find inspiration and enthusiasm! I am looking forward at the June meeting to viewing the creations by our members as they took up the Art Challenge from photos from our Photography Club. Thank you to all of you who are participating. Please remember too...the ASSC would like to thank you for being a member. Please register online (so we have numbers for the caterer) to attend the Member Appreciation Dinner on September 29 th. See you on June 12 for the meeting and Potluck! 6:30 start!!! Check out the Art Challenge productions, and visit over a plate of potluck!! Please bring any unwanted art related items for the Garage Sale but don t expect to make a fortune from their sale as all proceeds will be donated to the coffee fund for our general meetings and you know everyone enjoys coffee! September will begin another year of exciting creations at the Culture Days, Loft Gallery shows, the Fall Show and the wonderful Christmas Market and of course all the inspiring workshops that Elaine has coordinated for us. There is something for everyone!

2 This Society is fortunate to have such dedicated members on its Board and they will meet again on September 4. The next General Meeting of members is September 11. Until September, enjoy the hot weather (despite our Alberta mosquitoes!) and the lazy days and come refreshed and inspired in the fall. Thank you to: Regards, Sonjja Thank you to Lorraine & Ken, and to Doreen Koladich for opening up on the Drop-In Painting Days, and for being so enthusiastic and taking care of all those who participated. Thank you also to Lorraine for stepping up to chair the Fall Show 2018!! MEMBERS CORNER Next Board Meeting: Thursday, June 7, 6:00 pm Next General Meeting : Tuesday, June 12, Meeting begins at 6:30. Potluck Dinner And Garage Sale to follow. Samantha Williams Chapelsky will do a demo at the September meeting on image transfers on various surfaces. She will provide the attending members with an information sheet on the processes demonstrated. She is the Western Canada Golden Paints representative.

3 Our 3rd Annual Hidden Treasures Open Art Studio Tour is in place with 21 artists in 11 locations! Bigger and better than ever!! Come out and bring a friend or two to this exciting self-guided art studio tour. There is no charge to the public for the event. You will get to view the creative spaces of many artists, view their vast collection of art and buy a hidden treasure of your own. The guide with a map is available at the Red Barn, at many businesses throughout Strathcona County and on-line at Updates will be on our ArtStrathcona Facebook page as well.

4 WORKSHOP REVIEWS: Comment on the Cindy Revell Workshop: It was with some trepidation that I signed up for the Whimsical Art course. I felt a little afraid of venturing into the unknown but also excited by a new challenge. No need for fear! Cindy was the perfect teacher for this course. We had a lot of fun. In fact the class couldn t wait to set up their canvases and get started painting whimsically. Cindy circulated around the room answering questions, drawing out ideas from the artist, and helping problem solve. The knowledge I picked up in this class can all be applied any painting genre. Cindy touched on colour theory, composition, and design amongst many other topics. Cindy is an experienced teacher, careful to spend time with each student and always encouraging. She freely shares her knowledge. I am not sure how much Whimsical Art I will do, but I do know this - I will take another course from Cindy Revell, whatever the topic! 2018 High School Student Art Show and Competition Attendance Friday night 209, Saturday 43, Sunday 35 = 287 Total Silver Collection $ Entries Entries were down from last year, probably due to 2 sub teachers at 2 schools Second entries were allowed a few days prior to deadline, 13 students entered two pieces SCAAA 54 students entered for one or more of the County programs. 6 Pieces of work were chosen for the Loan program and 3 were selected to be purchased. 9 Library Corner Happy Spring, going on Summer. With the amazing weather and the advent of flowers of all hues, our creative thoughts often turn to the outdoors. When you need a break from gardening or visiting all the local famers markets for produce to whip up grilled gourmet delights, consider taking your art practice into nature. The art society library has resources for en plein air work that will get you started, or refresh your winter-hibernated skills, in creating in the open. We also have many resources about creating landscape paintings, and how to paint such natural elements as water, rocks and pretty much anything that grows in nature. Yet another reason to visit us at the Library Corner at the June meeting we have new books that have been donated to us. They are mainly watercolour works, but many of them offer advice and tips for artists of all genres. Come and be among the first to explore new techniques in the next few months. And, you can take these books and DVDs out for the entire summer. Yes, creating at this time of year can be a leisurely process in your back yard, at the lake or on vacation somewhere more exotic. Whatever you borrow in June isn t due back until the September meeting! So, keep in mind these three reasons for visiting the library in June: o Resources for creating in and about the outdoors o New books o Borrow the books for three months o Your Library Committee wishes you a relaxing and creative Summer. We hope to see you at the June meeting come and talk to us. Kind regards, Christina When I am finishing a picture, I hold some God-made object up to it a rock, a flower, the branch of a tree or my hand as a final test. If the painting stands up beside a thing man cannot make, the painting is authentic. If there s a clash between the two, it s bad art. Marc Chagall
