1 Welcome to the Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools 2017 The aim of this competition is to encourage school children to interact with and be inspired by artworks in the National Galleries Collection. Category A: Nursery Theme Feathery Friends
2 Allen William Seaby, Bullfinches, 1911 Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Estate of the Artist Things to think about: Why are these birds two different colours? What time of year is it and what time of day? How do you know? What might the birds see from their branch? What could be below the tree? If they were speaking to each other what would they say? Facts The things Allen liked drawing best were birds and animals. He made picture books for children about birds and ponies. You can make prints by cutting into wood and rolling ink over the top and Allen was very good at this. His grandson also became a famous illustrator.
3 Willem Wissing, Mary of Modena, Consort of James VII and II, 1687 Scottish National Portrait Gallery Things to think about: Why is this lady s hand on the wing of the bird? Does she own it or has it just landed on her knee? What kind of birds do we see in Scotland? Is this one of them? How would it feel to touch this bird? Would it be fun or scary? Facts This lady is actually a queen you can see her crown on the left. She didn t really have a pet bird. The artist added it in as a symbol to show that she believed in God and led a good life. Many rich people liked this artist s work work and paid him to paint their portraits.
4 Scottie Wilson Yellow Birds in the Tree, about 1960 Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art The Estate of the Artist Things to think about: How many birds can you see in this tree? Are they related? What are they all doing there? Why did they choose this tree? If you could listen to this painting would it be quiet or noisy? What kind of sounds might you hear? Where can you spot little moon shapes? Facts Scottie was born in Glasgow and had to leave school when he was 8 to help earn money for his family by selling newspapers in the street. One day when he was 44 he picked up a pen to doodle and then never stopped drawing again. Some of his drawings are used as patterns for dinner plates.
5 What do you have to do? Think about: Draw: Use: What do birds do all day and where do they sleep? How do they keep themselves clean? Can all birds fly? Which bird has an amazing tail? Can you think of a very tiny one and a very big one? Some birds can be taught to talk. What kinds of birds do people often keep as pets? Birds can be very tasty have you ever eaten any? Feathers are used for lots of things, for example? What different sounds do birds make? What is a dawn chorus? Who wakens everyone in the farmyard? Watch carefully how a bird moves with its feet, its head, its wings and its tail. Can you copy it? Which birds come to us as summer visitors? Which birds only come out at night? Do you know: Owl Babies; Sing a Song of Sixpence; Ten Little Dicky Birds? Ever listened to Tweet of the Day? A picture of a bird. It might be flying, resting or eating. It could be a bird from this country, somewhere more exotic or an imaginary bird. It could be free, in a cage or at the zoo. A4, A3 or A2 size paper in any colour. Any materials or combination of materials, such as pencils, paint, chalks, crayons, paper or fabric. Entries will be judged on: Originality and creativity Confident handling of materials Boldness and impact
6 How can entering this competition contribute to my teaching of Curriculum for Excellence and interdisciplinary learning? Here are some examples of what the children will be able to do in working towards their entries: Expressive Arts Art and Design: Inspired by a range of stimuli, I can express and communicate my ideas, thoughts and feelings through activities in art and design. EXA 0-05a I can respond to the work of artists and designers by discussing my thoughts and feelings. EXA 0-07a Health and wellbeing Literacy and English Sciences Social Studies By exploring and observing movement, I can describe what I have learned about it. HWB 0-24a I enjoy exploring events and characters in stories and other text, sharing my thoughts in different ways. LIT 0-01c I listen and watch for useful or interesting information and I use this to make choices or learn new things. LIT 0-04a I have observed living things in the environment over time and am becoming aware of how they depend on each other. SCN 0-01a I explore and appreciate the wonder of nature within different environments and have played a part in caring for the environment. SOC 0-08a
