She enjoys both oils and pastels. She has a degree in education and has taught in the public schools, in the continuing education programs at both Richland and Brookhaven Colleges, private classes and is presently teaching art classed for the Texas Instruments Art club and the Highland Park United Methodist Church. Janice has been featured in one-woman shows at many galleries in the Dallas area and elsewhere in the state of Texas. Her work has been included in The Artists of Texas, Volume 1V, Fine Arts Catalog and she was featured as one of the Master Pastel Artists of the World in the 2003 June-July issue of the International Artists Magazine. In 1994 one of her paintings was included in the Dallas Museum for the Art s Beaus Art s Auction. Her oils have been included in the Oil Painters of America shows around the country and her pastel was included in the Pastel Society of America show in New York. She has been asked to give programs and teach workshops for numerous art organizations. Janice is pastpresident of the Pastel Society of the Southwest and the Associated Creative Artists of Dallas. She is a signature member of ACA and Texas & Neighbors. She also received the Irving Art Centers Award of Excellence in the 2009 Texas & Neighbors Regional Exhibit and one of her paintings was used on the cover of their 2011 prospectus. Janice was a judge for the Dallas Business Community for the Arts for several years. She has judged Richardson Art Society s Youth Show, the TAPPS show and other award shows in Dallas and the surrounding area Including Ellis County and Farmers Branch - Carrolton. 2 MARCH DEMONSTRATION John Pototshnick Oil Landscape The first thing we were shown at the demonstration was a video of John Pototshnick creating a painting over four days. Before he begins a painting, he makes a 4 x 6" painting to establish the values and colors of the painting. He feels the values are the most important thing in a painting. He paints on Ampersand gesso board which is a hard board with a smooth gesso surface. He uses numerous paint brands. His palette consists of cadmium red, burnt sienna, cerulean blue and yellow ochre. From these he creates other colors to use. White and black are also included. He only uses broad flat brushes. He uses mineral spirits with the oil paints. He feels that a good way to start a painting is to make a smaller proportioned value and color study. He also thinks it is best to start a painting is with a limited palette. He begins by painting the values in their shapes; they will ultimately be covered with the colors of that value for each section. He draws in the objects using a brush. He uses a gray scale to insure the values are correct.. Burnt umber is a good color to use for this step.. Then he makes the colors to match in value; they are then applied to the shapes. The temperature of the color is important. The background is established first. Then shapes are done, step by step. Some of the paint was applied over previously painted parts of the painting with a scrubbing sort of motion. This was to make this area look further away than other parts of the painting. The surface was slick, so he didn't use the mineral springs much. The use of black and white is restricted. It will not be harmonious if you're using a lot of different colors. If you're struggling with a color, check with the gray scale; every color fits on the gray scale. It may not look like blue on the palette. The palette for a nature painting may not look like a palette for a regular painting; it is more muted. Doing plein air painting is a good way to learn to be a good landscape painter. 3 GETTING TO KNOW YOU Personal Art History of RCAS Members Bob Voges Bob Voges loves the challenge, beauty and spontaneity of transparent watercolor. His background includes a 40 year career in engineering. He holds a BS Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master and PhD Degree in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University. His interest in watercolor painting began over 45 years ago with part time lessons while he continued his Engineering career at Texas Instruments and Raytheon. His early watercolor instructors and role models were Jim Powell and Bud Biggs. Today and throughout the past 15 years he has been and is inspired and mentored by Naomi Brotherton. In addition, he has taken watercolor workshops with Edgar Whitney, Robert E. Wood, Eric Wiegardt, Ken Hosmer, Sterling Edwards and Alvaro Castagnet to name a few. He is a Signature member and past President of the Southwestern Watercolor Society. Dr. Bob, a nickname picked up at Raytheon, is someone that the right vs. left brain theory can be seen in his engineering career as well as his art career. Although engineering is predominately left brain, his work in Research & Development and electromagnetic theory included a significant amount of creative and even intuitive right brain activity. His art works are representational realistic watercolors that lean toward the left brain approach. In spite of all this theory he loves the creativity of watercolor with its happy accidents, transparent beautiful washes and strong vibrant color. Since his retirement in 2006 he has been painting full time. His works are primarily realistic landscapes or cityscapes. His inspiration comes from travel photographs and his recent conversion to plein air painting. Working outdoors gives him the foundation for larger works in the studio. He is striving to produce loose colorful paintings that the viewer can enjoy, while they interpret the meaning of the painting and perhaps highlight fond memories. 7 Message from the President Jones C. McConnell, Jr. Spring is fully upon us! Our Spring Show at the Library was a good one, and well received by all those who ventured into the third floor. The Regional Show is now up at the Esiemann Center and we'll all enjoy the Awards Reception on Mother's Day May 14th. Mickey Archer has done a wonderful job of planning and directing this show. Mickey will MC the awards program, and we hope everyone enjoys the new seating arrangement planned. Our last Meeting before the summer break is scheduled for May 16th to highlight Janice Hamilton demonstrating her amazing pastel work. Please make our visitors feel welcome, so they will want to join RCAS in the future. RCAS is an ALL Volunteer organization.
