2 Hallway Greetings A hallway greeting is a message at your door. The Hallway Greeting can have many different things including quotes, facts, pictures, and even jokes. The kids love to interact with the Hallway greetings by reading them, answering questions, and solving riddles. The Hallway Greeting is usually related to a theme or lesson.

5 Agenda An Agenda or schedule in the classroom lets the children know what is going on throughout the day. An Agenda in the art room will look different than the regular classroom. My Agenda is a list of projects separated grade level by grade level. I also include information about lessons and projects on the agenda.

10 Welcome / Morning Messages The Welcome / Morning Message is a short task that is posted at the beginning of the day or the beginning of a class. The message usually includes Vocabulary, content, and skills that you are teaching. I do not have one for every class every day. I like to introduce new lessons with a welcome message or finish up a lesson with a welcome message.

11 You have been chosen to design the next great postage stamp! Mix each set of colors in your sketchbook. -Illustrate or write a list of ideas in your sketchbook. -Be prepared to share with your neighbor in 5 minutes. How many art careers can you think of? -Turn to your table partner and make a list in one of your sketchbooks.

12 Morning / Welcome Message Positives It helps to get the class started as soon as the kids arrive. It can be used to review a lesson or introduce a lesson. It helps with vocabulary and literacy skills.

13 Positives continued The kids enjoy working together on Welcome Message tasks. One of those tasks is progress reports. Kids fill out a questionnaire about their artwork and share their answers with each other. This exercise gives them a chance to intelligently discuss their artwork. They are expected to provide detailed answers. We also share the results as a group in a community circle.

16 Why not Rules? Rules are made to be broken! Many rules are written negatively. No Running, No Chewing Gum, No this, No that Procedures are put in place so that the situation runs smoothly. Procedures are written in a way that reinforces positive behavior. Respect Each Other..

17 Entering the room Procedures Enter the room quietly. Use Self-Control as you find your seat. Give Me Two Hands

18 My classroom procedures It is Important to post procedures and practice the expected behavior. Keep it Simple and let the kids help in the creation of new procedures if needed. My classroom procedures are really just common sense, but they help to reinforce the correct behaviors especially RESPECT.

19 I discuss all tool and equipment safety concerns project by project. I also have the kids practice using tools in a safe way If they are not experienced. For example the kindergarten kids practice using scissors and handling them correctly before they start cutting a lot.

20 This procedure takes care of most behavior issues. We have a long discussion about what respect means at the beginning of the year, and any other time the kids might need to talk about it. We also talk about respecting the tools and equipment.

21 This procedure is my way of getting everyone s attention at once. When I say, Two Hands, the kids put down any supplies they are holding and lie both of their hands flat on the table. The kids know that when I say two hands they need to listen for instructions.

22 I encourage the kids to explore without stress. They should know that when learning new art processes, they may not be successful at first, but it s okay because they are just learning. They are exploring without stress.

23 Information Station/Media Area I like to have an area with books, extra art supplies, and a computer. It is important to have many different types of books. Art History, Fiction for Children and middle school age, how-to, origami, craft, and photography books are just a few examples.

26 Information Station/Media Area continued I like to keep scrap paper around for different free time crafts, drawing and origami. I also have scissors, stencils, colored pencils, markers and glue available. From time to time I stock the Information Station with books from the Library on the topics that we are studying. If the kids have a computer available they can, under your guidance, research artists, look at artwork, and post pictures to student galleries.
