1 This Project is funded in part by the City of Richardson through the Richardson Arts Commission Volume 48, Issue 3 Marilyn Bourbon Water Media/Gouache November 2013 November 19, :30-8:45 PM Richardson Public Library Marilyn s style is best described as both geometric expressionism (an exploration of self through shape, color and design) and subjective historicism (an exploration of self through the past). She expresses her inner feelings and emotions through her work by weaving pattern and design into a descriptive mood, which explores how human beings construct their world. Many years of experience as a professional interior designer have developed her innate ability to see the negative space surrounding shapes and forms. She sees her painting as an exploration of women s voices through color and design. She has won many awards for watercolor and watermedia in juried shows, and has had her work exhibited numerous times in national, gallery and museum shows. She has also served as a juror in artistic competitions. Risk-taking through experimentation is an inherent part of her artistic approach, so continued evolution of her style should be expected. She believes understanding ourselves and the world in which we live comes through experimentation, change, and expression of honest emotion. 4 GETTING TO KNOW YOU MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Darla Bostick At the Botanical Gardens in Fort Worth Juried Exhibition, I got 1st place in watermedia and 1st place in mixed media. Also, I have two pieces in the Irving Art Association's Traveling Animal Art Show at the Irving West Public Library and won a merchandise award in the Southwestern Watercolor Society 50th Juried Exhibition. HELP NEEDED The Regional Art Show committee needs someone who will be in charge of Merchandise Awards. Please reply to Beth Eschbach betheschbach@gmail.com Personal Art History of RCAS Members John Cheney John Cheney: Woodworker, Author, Cook, Data Base Programmer John is a man who has been blessed with many talents and enjoys showing them off. He thoroughly enjoys making sawdust in his woodshop and also produces an occasional gem. He has made boxes, chairs, lamps, a cradle for a great granddaughter, turned pens, plates, and candleholders. As an author he recently had published his Meditations for the Watch, a book containing a series of meditations about the events surrounding the crucifixion of Christ. He has also written an article on how to manage a juried art show. As an engineer/programmer, he wrote a number of technical papers for use by his company, Collins Radio Company, later known as Collins Rockwell. As a cook he enjoys preparing Italian style dinners (mostly spaghetti and pizza), pies (sugar free chocolate cream is his specialty, as well as a breakfast pie), breads, English muffins, and chocolate éclairs. Because of his late wife Rosemary s art activities, he was able to used his data base programming skills in developing software for RCAS that has significantly helped in managing RCAS shows, particularly the regional show and the yearbook. 6 October Demo Case Cement Panel Bill Hall Bill Hall Cast Cement Panel Bill Hall has an art history of conventional artwork, but he has traded it in for a truly innovative approach He demonstrated his unique, original process of colored liquid cement/ acrylic mixtures which are dribbled, brushed, scraped, textured, layered and poured onto a pane of glass which already has had silicone applied in some areas to create textures. When he has determined the painting is finished, he covers the back of the painting with 1/4 of cement. Once the cement has dried, he pries the picture off the glass. It does not always come off in one piece, but he will glue it back together if possible or maybe not as originally painted. He is profoundly interested in the creative process. Bill artistically manipulates the materials but also allows them to "speak" to him intuitively. He strives to learn something new from each piece, not repeating the same thing. Rich texture and color combinations combined with unexpected surprises in the finished piece bring him joy and fulfillment. For him, subjective images pollute the creative expression he needs for this process. Besides mesmerizing us with his unique approach to artwork, Bill also showed us several videos one illustrating his unique approach to the early stages of his artwork, and one showing us his home and home gallery. Bill encouraged us to paint for ourselves and to become immersed completely in that joyful creative process. We held drawings for the three pieces of his art Bill generously donated to our group. 7 Message from the President Beth Eschbach Many thanks to Bill Hall for his October demo and artwork giveaways. There was much interest in his use of pigmented cement on glass. We couldn t wait for the piece to dry enough so we could see the finished product. Amazing. Thanks to Donna Head and Kathy Elliott for running a successful Membership Show. The show was well received and your organization skills are always appreciated. Mark your calendar for our November 19th Event. Marilyn Bourbon will demo her stylized figures using color and pattern in watercolor, acrylic, and gouache. We had Marilyn as a fascinating workshop instructor last year, so be sure to come see her work. We won t have our regular December meeting. We will meet at Debbie Berman s house for our Holiday Party with a Critique by Jane Jones. Bring finger foods to share and a piece of artwork to be critiqued.
