4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Verb Tenses Part 2 (Basic Present) (5-6 minutes) The Basic Present tense expresses an unchanging, repeated, or recurring action (ex. John drives a taxi.) or situation that exists only now (ex. Sara is happy.). It can also represent a widespread truth (ex. The sun sets in the west.). The basic present tense is achieved when the main verb or be-verb is added directly after the subject: Subject + predicate (includes main verb/be-verb). We also add -s to the main verb if the subject is 3 rd person singular (he, she, and it). Remember: An auxiliary verb (do/does) is not used unless the sentence is negative or interrogative. The auxiliary in a negative sentence is placed between the subject and the main verb.
