1 For your Summer Reading Book of Choice, you will write a novel review essay based on the following instructions and template. This will be your first major essay for the year. Your essay will consist of both a summary of the novel and an opinion and recommendation for the novel. Write a summary of the book. 1 st Paragraph Write about the setting (where and when the story takes place). Introduce the main character or characters in the story. (Ex: What are character s qualities, name, etc.) Discuss what conflict/problem the main character faces in the story. If you re still having trouble starting, you can answer the questions who, what, when, where, and how. Minimum 5 sentences 2 nd Paragraph Summarize what happens up until the high point of the story, but don t give away the ending. This should be just enough to tease the reader into wanting to read this book. Use some of these transition words to help you write your review. Minimum 5 sentences. o first o finally o another o second o after that o as a result o third o because o later o last o next o during o also o then o between o for example Write a paragraph giving your opinion of the book. Use these guidelines: Write about why you like or dislike the book. Minimum 5 sentences. Give details. For example: o Was the book confusing? o Was it too easy or hard to read? o Was it predictable or believable? o Did you like the ending? o What was your favorite part? o What connections did you make with your life or other books? o Talk about the author s style of writing and give examples from the book. Explain whether you would recommend this book to a student or not. Minimum 5 sentences. Rate the book from 1 star to 5 stars. Give specific examples as to why you gave it the rating that you did. Examples should NOT include a quote from the book or a summary of the part of the book that you did or did not like.
