THE HENRY MOORE INSTITUTE It is a world-recognised centre for its wide-ranging programme of sculpture exhibitions and research. It was set up by Moore in 1997 to encourage appreciation of the visual arts, especially sculpture.
THE BODY EXTENDED (SCULPTURE & PROSTHETICS) In this exhibition, the artists with their over 70 art works, objects and images show how they have contributed to address the radical changes our bodies have undergone thanks to prosthetics.
ACTIVITIES: PRESENTATION: Warmer (the war poster): students give ideas on what might happen if you don t pay attention while at war / when driving/ etc.. to elicit IF sentences (grammar point) PRACTICE: (photo of prosthetic leg) Students watch the video about Oscar Pistorius and read about his life. Work on vocabulary #synopsis. PRODUCTION: A debate on people s disabilities. Further production: a writing on someone who has overcome a disability.
LEEDS CITY MUSEUM During our training course in Leeds we visited the CITY MUSEUM where we could enjoy a trip on time troughd many different aspects related to the city. The most relevant part of the museum was the variety of objects and galleries. Life On Earth, The History of Leeds, Ancient civilizations and other temporary exhibitions, such us In Their Footsteps, showed us important aspects in the development of Life in Leeds. The clear and didactical way in which all objects are displayed must be highlighted.
IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS We had to do an activity about this temporary exhibition about the stories of Leeds people during the First World War. The documents and objects (letters, awards, uniforms, toys, etc.) reflected the huge impact of this conflict on the lives of people. The picture shows a letter from a soldier to his mother. It is very touching and it could be used in our lessons as a writing exercise: What would you answer if you were this young soldier s mother?
We have tought it could be a good idea use this picture with our students to plan a Guessing Game using the photos of the important people in the city of Leeds. Students will have to work in pairs, joinning the people with their names and their jobs. They will have to use descriptions too. Then they could research on internet about the life and the relevance of these people in the history of the city. Afterwards, this model of activity can be used to do a similar project with names of important people in our city.
The Royal Armouries Museum KEY POINTS OF LEARNING The Royal Armouries Museum of Leeds provides the visitor a wide display of weapons from all over the world at different times in history. We have reflected on the fact that war and weapons have always been present in the history of mankind. We have been especially shocked by the number of violent crimes that this city suffers and the social consequences of them.
In this picture we can see nowadays fighting fields : STREETS We can learn the whole process the police has to go through in order to solve a crime. We have also been really moved by the way the families affected suffer the consequences of those criminal acts. We found this comment very appropriate to call the attention of society and promote social consciousness to change some dangerous models of behavior.
We could use these pictures with our students at last year of secondary or with higher level students to encourage them to think about the way the police work and the consequences of violence. They would be working with words related to clues analyzed by the police (fingerprints, bullets, blood spots, cigarette ends, DNA analysis ) present in crime scenes. The lesson plan could be expanded to raise a debate on the use of weapons in our society and its consequences.
