Thomas Hirschhorn: Assemblage ABOUT THE ARTIST Thomas Hirschhorn is an artist featured in the fall 2013 Hudson (Show)Room exhibition, Localized Histories. Inspired by the work of Artpace founder, Linda Pace, Localized Histories brings together select works from the Linda Pace Foundation composed of found objects and rooted in assemblage. Including artists Leonardo Drew, Tony Feher, Isa Genzken, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Thomas Hirschhorn, Christian Marclay, and Linda Pace, Localized Histories addresses the various formal and conceptual issues of space, time, process, and material. The exhibition explores the relationships between the static, found objects and their temporal nature to create something which extends beyond painting and sculpture. LESSON OVERVIEW This lesson will enable students to experiment with various found materials to create a monochromatic assemblage work of art. During this process students will question and criticize the use and application of everyday objects. Using common materials such as cellophane, aluminum foil, and cardboard students will design and construct a work of art in the style of Thomas Hirschhorn. Students can also incorporate text by assembling a wide array of pre-chosen and printed words.

2 OBJECTIVES In this lesson, students will: Create a low relief sculpture using various non-traditional materials. Formulate and incorporate a writing component into their artwork. Experiment with basic color theory, vocabulary, and concepts in relation to monochromatic designs. Observe and research the commercial uses of trees in our everyday lives. 3 PROCEDURE Students will: 1. Receive a piece of cardboard as the base of their low relief assemblage. 2. Write their names on the back of this cardboard. 3. Choose one color of cellophane to incorporate into their artwork (monochromatic: having or consisting of one color or hue). 4. Construct various elements onto their cardboard and/or cellophane with sheets of aluminum foil. Students can manipulate the foil extensively through folding, wrinkling, crumpling, sculpting, smoothing, etc. 5. Experiment with unity, composition, and space as they develop the various elements within their artwork. 6. Select from the vast assortment of words printed out on plain label paper to stick onto their artwork. With these words the students can create poems, haiku, statements, etc. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS TO FACILITATE A CONVERSATION WITH STUDENTS What is assemblage? How do found materials relate to this way of sculpting? How is this different from collage? What is monochromatic? What are other color schemes you could use? Primary, secondary, analogous, tertiary, etc.? Why do you think writing is important to Thomas Hirschhorn? How can writing enhance a piece of artwork? Who are some other artists that incorporate text? What are some other materials you would have liked to incorporate into artwork? Why? Is this artwork you have created a sculpture? Compare and contrast threedimensional artwork and two-dimensional artwork. What did you title your artwork? Why? Did this relate to the text you incorporated? What is a poem, haiku, etc.? What are the names of some poets you know and appreciate?

Design a free standing sculpture using these materials instead of it existing on a flat piece of cardboard. Research other artists that incorporate text in their artwork. Write a story with the words allotted or incorporate an author s essay or excerpt that you are inspired by. Identify and debate the commercial uses of cellophane and aluminum foil. Research the idea and process of assemblage and found material sculpture.
