We can now look forward to warm weather and summer vacations and many happy hours quilting with friends.

Favourable comments were made by many people and several were moved to send their comments to the website.

Flowers are blooming and the sweet smell of crab apple blooms is beginning to be blown on the breeze. Many happy hours have been spent happily quilting with friends. We can now look forward to warm weather and summer vacations and many happy hours quilting with friends. The quilt show is over and Beth, Jackie and Deb are to be congratulated on a very successful event. The display of quilts was exceptional on several fronts; workmanship, colour, pattern and variety. Favourable comments were made by many people and several were moved to send their comments to the website. The next big event to look forward to, besides workshops and meetings, is the retreat held at Bridge Water Retreat near Tweed. You can look it up on the internet for information on the facilities. The weekend of September 19 is marked on my calendar as a Do not miss. To reserve your place for a fun quilting weekend Nancy Switzer needs your deposit of $50.00 at the June or July meeting. Just imagine; no husband, no kids, no cooking, no phone, great food. What more could you ask for? Have a great summer and see you at a workshop or a meeting. What is it you ask, well it is for all members of the guild to make a quilt for us to donate in the community. You can even choose where it is to go. After all we are part of the Quinte Quilters Guild. We have kits ready for you to practice your machine quilting on or if you have blocks that need a home or just want to try something different and small. There is no special size as some places only want 30 square, baby size, and even a small lap, or something that could be used in a wheel chair. As of the beginning of May we were only half way to our goal for this year and with summer coming we know that gets in the way of spending time at the sewing machine. We would also like to let you know that since the quilt show we have welcomed four new members to our group. So if you would like to join us for a fun day of laughter, and inspiration we meet on the 2 nd and 4 th Wednesdays 10:00 till 3:00 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church at the corner of Church St. and Victoria St. in Belleville. Griege goods with a high thread count are hand dipped in dye and go through several processes including drying in the sun. Patterns are created using a variety of techniques such as resist dyeing by stamping with wax using copper chops, scrunching fabric, pleating and throwing salt on the fabric. Bus Trip to Paducah, Kentucky By Beth Crook Retiring from work can be a stressful and exciting event and I planned several things to keep myself busy and interested in life.

For three years a friend and I kept our ears open for news of a bus trip so when I finally heard about a trip, I leapt at the opportunity.

At one of our guild meetings Faye Rainie, a new member, heard about the trip and decided to go. So we invited her to share our room. We spent two full days travelling on the bus to Kentucky.

7 Bus Trip to Paducah, Kentucky By Beth Crook Retiring from work can be a stressful and exciting event and I planned several things to keep myself busy and interested in life. One of them was going to Paducah, Kentucky to see the American Quilt Society show. For three years a friend and I kept our ears open for news of a bus trip so when I finally heard about a trip, I leapt at the opportunity. My friend now could not go, so I determined that, if I had to, I would go myself. In talking about it to other people Catherine Little decided that she would go with me and share a room. At one of our guild meetings Faye Rainie, a new member, heard about the trip and decided to go. So we invited her to share our room. We spent two full days travelling on the bus to Kentucky. The grass got greener and the weather warmer as we went south. On the hill and along the roads there is a purple / pink tree which was as widespread as lilacs are here. In Kentucky all the trees had leaves and the dogwood trees, both pink and white, were blooming. The dogwoods had been planted all over the town and were well trimmed and displayed. At night they were lit on most of the lawns and public places and makes a beautiful tour. When we first arrived in Paducah we could see Hancock s, Susan the tour guide, asked where we wanted to go first. Fabric won out over the hotel and we visited Hancock s before we went to the hotel. This place is at least the size of Walmart and filled with thousands of bolts of fabric. For the next three days there were shops and vendors, the town, the museum and the show to hold our attention. Quilt week is like Christmas to the town and they work hard to put on their best show. Old quilts don t interest me much but the quilts in the museum were exceptional and only a few old ones. There were several hundred vendors at the show and spread around the town. And several venues for quilts. The main thing I noticed about the quilts was the amount of quilting on them. The makers / artists must have spent almost as much on thread as on the fabric. To my surprise, I found myself drawn to the art quilts. There were entries and people from all over the world, one morning, while having breakfast at the hotel, I met a woman who was with a tour from Australia. They were in Paducah because one of them had a quilt accepted into the show. I saw one group, which looked like a family, in t-shirts which had FART (Fabric Acquisition Road Trip) printed on the back. Least I forget, one of the highlights was meeting QUILT MAN who is the local superhero. His sidekick, BOBBIN, unfortunately wasn t with us. Susan and McCoy s had arranged for him to come on the bus and give a tour. Joe, the bus driver turned that bus around really tight corners and down narrow streets. And more than once, he took us anywhere we wanted to go. After three days and having all spent money we were ready to head for home. Beth and Faye with Quilt

Two more days on the bus after doing a lot of walking had everyone stiff from sitting. The driver and tour guide did an exceptional job of helping everyone enjoy our time in Paducah.

There were many activities on the bus to keep boredom away and some really good prizes. There were two buses from the Ottawa Kingston area and they picked up passengers all the way to Whitby.

8 Two more days on the bus after doing a lot of walking had everyone stiff from sitting. The driver and tour guide did an exceptional job of helping everyone enjoy our time in Paducah. Neither one had any experience with quilting and marveled at the jargon which they learned. On the last day Susan succumbed and bought a quilt kit. There were many activities on the bus to keep boredom away and some really good prizes. There were two buses from the Ottawa Kingston area and they picked up passengers all the way to Whitby. McCoy s were surprised at the interest and are thinking of repeating the trip next year. I told them that, if they do, let me know several months early to get the news out. The cost was not prohibitive; for under a thousand with four to a room you get the bus ride, multiple day entry to the show, entry to the quilt museum, breakfast, supper at the hotel ( if you didn t mind the same thing every day ) and mom and dad to make sure you had a good time. I got to know Cathy better became friends with Faye, who I did not know at all. And they learned more about golf that they really ever wanted to know. After not watching the golf channel for months I took the opportunity to watch every night. This trip is well worth the money, after all you can t take it with you, and if they have it next year you should seriously consider going. 9 CHOOSING COLOURS PART 4 Judith Wilson, Cdnquiltswappers How intensity determines the style of your quilts Neutral colors are considered to be non-colours. Black, white and gray are the true neutrals. Quilters also use off-whites and light beiges as neutrals. Any other color is dominant when used with a neutral color Neutrals are most often used as block or quilt backgrounds. They set off and space out the colors used in the quilt and provides a resting place for the eyes. Neutrals also play other roles in the overall mood of the quilt. Colors placed on black are more vibrant than colors placed on other backgrounds. Toned-down colors placed on the black background become more intense while bright colors placed on the off-white background become softer. This softening effect is also true of white, gray and beige backgrounds. Pale gray print used as a background quiets the often jarring effect of the many bright colors of plaids and scrappy fabrics. Neutrals also play a part in the temperature of your quilt. Black is considered to be warm while white and many grays are thought to be cool. Beige may be either, depending on the actual color and the colors with which the beige is used. A white background provides soft and quiet support for pastels. Pastels are actually tints created by adding white to a pure color; they usually appear to be cool. Because of this, white or very pale gray is the most natural neutral to use with pastels. Off-white or beige may deaden the light and airy feel of the tints. Beige print background can be used to complement rich fall shades. A cool white background would have interfered with our mental image of the warmth of the autumn season. Applying the Basics We have discussed how to make decisions on the use of color by answering a few simple questions. Do I want this quilt to be soothing or exciting? Will the theme be traditional, sophisticated, contemporary or childlike? How will differences in value affect the clarity of the design? Will this color blend into or stand apart from its neighboring colors? Is the color too bright or too dull for my theme? Do I need to add a little spark of intensity? Does my background mute or enliven my other color choices? Does it contribute to my theme? All these questions provide answers to the use of a single color, its shades, tints and tones. But how can you be sure which colors will work together in a design? We have now become acquainted with color -- the different versions of a single color; its affect on mood; its chameleon like ability to change in value, intensity and temperature; and its importance to the success of a design.
