1 2015 Handi Quilter s Academy Classes Important class information: Class numbering o PS indicates it is an HQ Pro-Stitcher class. It may be hands on or lecture demo. o LA indicates the class is hands-on using the HQ Avanté. o SS indicates the class is hands-on using the HQ Sweet Sixteen. o LD indicates the class is a lecture demo. Lecture demos may be taught on either the HQ Avanté or the HQ Sweet Sixteen. However, the techniques are applicable to any type longarm machine. o AS indicates the class is an Art & Stitch lecture demo. On Thursday, June 18, you have the option of selecting one 4-hour hands-on class (from 1:00 to 5:15 PM) or two 2-hour classes (hands-on or lecture demo, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM and 3:15 to 5:15 PM). Be sure to indicate which is your first choice (the 4-hour hands-on or two 2-hour classes) to ensure you are assigned to your top choice if it s available. The HQ Pro-Stitcher hands-on classes are taught with the latest version of HQ Pro-Stitcher on an HQ Avanté, with two people per machine. The longarm hands-on classes are taught on an HQ Avanté, with two people per machine. These classes are technique classes and are applicable to all HQ stand-up longarm machines. The HQ Sweet Sixteen hands-on classes are planned with one person per machine. If there is more demand than anticipated, we may choose to put two people per machine. Handi Quilter provides all class materials and supplies. Thursday, June 18, 10:15 AM to 12:15 PM PS-1: (hands-on, HQ Pro-Stitcher) Stress-Free Custom Quilting 2015 (taught by Marie Eldredge) Learn quick techniques for quilting sashings and blocks on point. Use Art and Stitch Designs, Trace Area, Echo, Positioning tools, and more. Everything you need to know to make your own souvenir sampler for This class will give you skills and confidence to achieve that custom quilting look. Last year s sampler is shown below. 1

2 SS-1 (hands-on, Sweet Sixteen): Texturizing Pictorial Quilts on the HQ Sweet Sixteen (taught by Charlotte Warr Andersen) Are you puzzled by what to do for quilting once your representational quilt has been created? Delve into ways to create additional surface relief and embellish and add texture to the appearance of pictorial elements by varying the lines and shapes while free-motion quilting at the HQ Sweet Sixteen. Varying lines and shapes, varying scale to create perspective, whether to match or contrast your thread. LA-1 (hands-on, HQ Avanté): In Love with Latticework (taught by Debby Brown) If the large areas of your quilt seem overwhelming, chalk a lattice and quilt one small area at a time. Choose simple freehand shapes such as swirls or curls and build your quilt one square at a time! LD-1: Transforming Your Work With Templates (taught by Kimmy Brunner) Did you know that the quickest, easiest way to achieve the look of perfection to your quilting is to add template work to your repertoire? Templates and rulers are the little miracle workers of the quilter's toolbox and can perform wonders when it comes to adding the look of flawless precision. In this drawing/design class for the confident beginner/early intermediate level machine quilter, I will show how to use templates to create great design work with minimal effort. Bring a notebook, pencil, and all of your questions. Cameras are always welcome. LD-7: Graffiti Quilting: A simple approach to complex designs (taught by Karlee Porter) Learn about Karlee Porter s unique Graffiti Quilting style. You ll learn how to combine and customize shapes and motifs to create something unique in the world of quilting. LD-15: Divide and Conquer: Wide Open Spaces (taught by Ebony Love) Do wide expanses of fabric induce panic and paralysis? Conquer your fear of negative space with some easy dividing techniques, then set your creativity free with a variety of free-motion designs that fit together beautifully in almost any space. 2

3 AS-1: Getting Started with Art & Stitch (taught by Mary Beth Krapil) Art and Stitch is a powerful, amazing and easy to use digitizing and quilt layout software. Mary Beth will give you a great introduction to the tools of Art & Stitch and to creating unique designs simply and easily (even if you can't draw!). Come see what the buzz is all about. Though not necessary, if you have a laptop with Art & Stitch loaded, (trial version OK) feel free to bring it to follow along. Thursday, June 18, 1:00 PM to 5:15 PM PS-2: (hands-on, HQ Pro-Stitcher) Everything Edge-to-Edge (taught by Vicki Hoth) IMPORTANT: This is a four-hour class. Edge-to-edge designs are the mainstay of computerized quilting and this class gives you everything you need to know to maximize your use of edge-to-edge designs, including advancing your quilt and repositioning. We love the wrapping and offsetting capabilities in HQ Pro-Stitcher and know that you will too. When combined with repeated designs, the possibilities are endless. This class opens up those possibilities to you. Learn how to vertically or horizontally offset repeated designs, when to overlap designs, and even how to control jump points. And then learn how to reset your start point when a thread break occurs. SS-2 (hands-on, Sweet Sixteen): Rhythm and Hues (taught by David Taylor) IMPORTANT: This is a four-hour class. This is a technique class for learning free-motion machine quilting on the HQ Sweet Sixteen. This fastpaced workshop helps quilters learn the basics through a series of quilting exercises. Students will learn to find their rhythm maintaining the speed of the machine to the speed of their hands. LA-2 (hands-on, HQ Avanté): Beautiful Custom Work For Beginners (taught by Kimmy Brunner) IMPORTANT: This is a four-hour class. When it comes to design work, do you feel like you never know where to start? Do you think that you don t have the skills needed to create a cool design plan for your quilt? Well, I think you do! In this class for the confident beginner, you ll find out how easily you can create a very nice-looking finished piece using a few simple lines, a couple of templates, some marks, and a little imagination. You ll receive stepby-step instructions and see lots of examples, and you ll be amazed at how simple this seemingly complex work actually is when you break it down into baby steps! Thursday, June 8, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM LD-2 (lecture demo): Whole Cloth Freehand Quilting (taught by Diane Henry) Learn an easy way to set up and quilt whole cloth quilts without computer aids, and marking as you go on the longarm frame. 3

4 LD-8 (lecture demo): Tension MAGIC! (taught by Debby Brown) Have you ever wished you could wave a magic wand and make your tension woes disappear forever? This class doesn t come with a wand, but it will teach you how to confidently tension your machine using a variety of threads so your tension problems will vanish! AS-2 (lecture demo): Art & Stitch Magic (taught by Mary Beth Krapil) Mary Beth will go beyond the basics and teach you fun and amazing ways to digitize new and unique designs for your quilts using the Art & Stitch Magic tools. Familiarity with the basic Art & Stitch tools will be helpful to get the most from this class. Though not necessary, if you have a laptop with Art & Stitch loaded, (trial version OK) feel free to bring it to follow along. Thursday, June 18, 3:15 PM to 5:15 PM LD-3 (lecture demo): Tangled Quilting (Zentangle) (taught by Linda Matteotti) Zentangle drawing lends itself naturally to free-motion quilting. Certified Zentangle Teacher, Linda Matteotti, will introduce you to Zentangle, an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. PS-14 (lecture demo): Computerized Organic Quilting (taught by Ebony Love) Get the look of free-motion quilting with the speed of computerized. Learn how to quilt a design in borders, sashing and blocks that you can repeat as many times as needed. Friday, June 19, 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM PS-3 (hands-on, HQ Pro-Stitcher): Playing with HQ Pro-Stitcher (taught by Diane Henry) Learn how to use and combine the features of Pro-Stitcher to create designs that will truly leave people wondering how you did that! Learn how to customize transform designs, using Skew, Repeat, Wrap, Duplicate, Rotate, Resize, and crop, into new designs. SS-3 (hands-on, Sweet Sixteen): Bending the Rule(r)s (taught by Charlotte Warr Andersen) Start thinking outside the box about how to use longarm rulers. Perfect your ruler skills while using the HQ Sweet Sixteen. LA-3 (hands-on, HQ Avanté): Ferns and Feathers (taught by Susan Jungerheld) Learn how to create and machine quilt a variety of freehand fern and feather patterns. These designs are very organic and natural looking. Relax and let yourself be free and creative. LD-4 (lecture demo): Twirly Whirly Feathers (taught by Kimmy Brunner) It doesn t matter if you re a freehand quilter or use a computerized machine; everyone loves feathers! Kimmy has taught literally thousands of people all over the world to draw and stitch beautiful feathers and she d love to teach you, too. They are so much easier than you d ever guess, and so much fun. If you re a freehand quilter, you ll be able to stitch these lush feathers with minimal marking. If you re a 4

5 computerized quilter, you ll be able to draw gorgeous feather designs for digitization. Join us in class as we ruffle our feathers! Bring a notebook, pencil, and all of your questions. Cameras are always welcome. LD-9 (lecture demo): Micro Quilting (taught by Cathie Zimmerman) Learn how to make a big impact on a small scale. You ll use the Micro Handles to experiment with stippling, pebbling, loops, shells, spirals, and other micro designs. Watch your quilts go from blah to RAH! Micro quilting makes that much difference! LD-17 (lecture demo): Quilt Tamer (taught by Diann Loper) We ve all seen them pageant quilt tops! They have borders that wave, blocks with D Cups and hourglass figures (or edges). In this class we ll tame those tops with tips and techniques to assist you in controlling the ever famous pageant top. You ll learn to work in fullness in borders and blocks while keeping in mind that it s hip to be square! We ll also look at design choices to enhance the quilt top based on the special needs of the top. This will be a fun, fast-paced class to bring out your inner Quilt Tamer! AS-3 (lecture demo): Digitizing a Design in Art & Stitch by Using a Digital Photo or Clip Art (taught by Linda Matteotti) Use a digital photo or clip art as the base design and trace the image using Art & Stitch. Learn to simplify a complex design and use only the bones of the design. Inspiration is everywhere carpets, fences, tile floors, fabric, and furniture to mention just a few. Friday, June 19, 10:15 AM to 12:15 PM PS-4 (hands-on, HQ Pro-Stitcher): Corners, Borders and Sashing (taught by Vicki Hoth) The multi-point areas in HQ Pro-Stitcher open up so many possibilities for quilting in odd-shaped blocks, whether they be corners, borders, sashings, triangles, hexagons, or wonky blocks. This class delves into Areas, and uses Skew/Align and Cropping tools to make those designs work in any quilt. This class will help you expand your skills for perfect placement as you quilt. SS-4 (hands-on, Sweet Sixteen): Block Party Pizzazz (taught by Beverly Burton) You ll be inspired as you take traditional quilt blocks and fill them with free-motion quilt designs that will completely transform the block from ordinary to extraordinary. We will sketch the block, and then create the quilt design. The sketches are the inspiration for a traditional-blocks-meet-modern-quilting sampler. LA-4 (hands-on, HQ Avanté): Quilter s Playtime! (taught by Debby Brown) Quilting can be serious business, but it is important to also have fun! This class has it all: appliqué, trapunto, couching, thread painting, bobbin work, and binding. Come and play with us! LD-5 (lecture demo): Spirals and Swirls and Vines, Oh My! (taught by Ebony Love) Expand your free-motion quilting repertoire by learning the art of the spiral in its many forms. From basic spirals to more complex designs, you'll learn to use spirals for blocks, borders, and background fills. 5

6 LD-10 (lecture demo): Pictorial Appliqué Multi-media Presentation (taught by David Taylor) If you've been in awe over David Taylor's award-winning pictorial art quilts, then this class is for you. Through a multi-media presentation David shares the secrets behind his hand-appliqué technique. The presentation will also covers how he builds his pictorial wall quilts; getting beautiful details from simple shapes by letting the fabric choices do all the hard work. PS-9 (lecture demo): What s the Trick? (taught by Marie Eldredge) A modern quilt, all made on the long arm. No trick, it s simply knowing how to use the right tool for the job. Use a spiral from Art and Stitch, move the Start and End Points, understand Crop and love your Channel Locks. We ll do some piecing on the long arm, learn how to make crop circles that run into each other, and also how to do the stained glass window strips. Everything you need to know to make your own modern quilt. Friday, June 19, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM PS-5 (hands-on, HQ Pro-Stitcher): Piano Keys with the Pro-Stitcher (taught by Linda Matteotti) Create a piano-key border easily by using designs that come with your Pro-Stitcher, in combination with the Move or Channel Lock features of the machine. You ll be amazed at how easy it is to achieve perfect spacing by learning a few simple tricks. SS-5 (hands-on, Sweet Sixteen): Graffiti Quilting: A simple approach to complex designs (taught by Karlee Porter) Try your hand at Karlee Porter s unique Graffiti Quilting style. You ll learn how to combine and customize shapes and motifs to create something unique in the world of quilting. (This class is repeated as a lecture demo, LD-7.) 6

7 LA-5 (hands-on, HQ Avanté): Free-hand Fun (taught by Susan Jungerheld) Learn basic freehand shapes and patterns that are no stress and all fun. These overall edge-to-edge designs are easy and look terrific on all types of quilts. After this class you will be more confident and enjoy finishing your quilts! LD-6 (lecture demo): Yep! You can quilt on that! (taught by Diann Loper) Quilting isn t just for Quilts anymore! Ever wondered how to quilt on fibers other than cotton? In this class we re entering the Home Dec World with our HQ Machines. From wall hangings to furniture covers, we can quilt them on our HQs. Have you ever had the desire to quilt on vinyl or pleather? You will after this class. Come learn some of the fun, out of the box things you can do and you ll leave saying, Yep, I can quilt on that! LD-11 (lecture demo): Gridplay (taught by Charlotte Warr Andersen) Grids are versatile and help to create structured patterns! Using a variety of stencils with either dots or lines for guides, create designs worthy of filling a large space or for background quilting. These patterns look great on modern quilts. Tricks for scaling these designs will also be discussed. Many structured free motion designs, pouncing from a stencil (either prepared on Golden Threads paper or purchased), and how to decide what scale the designs should be. PS-10 (lecture demo): On Your Mark, Jump In and Let s Record (taught by Elaine Gilmore) Learn how to create great background fills using Record, Mark, and Jump for use around appliqué and cropped areas, creating new library designs in the process. This class addresses the best ways to create backgrounds for minimal overstitching. We ll also learn how to stitch in the ditch with the aid of your HQ Pro-Stitcher. AS-4 (lecture demo): Using Art & Stitch to Lay Out a Whole Cloth Quilt (taught by Diane Henry) Combine the power of Art & Stitch and the ease of HQ Pro-Stitcher to lay out a small whole cloth quilt, and then stitch it out. 7

8 Friday, June 19, 3:15 PM to 5:15 PM PS-6 (hands-on, HQ Pro-Stitcher): How d She Do That? Now you can do that too! (taught by Elaine Gilmore) Come and have some fun. In this fast paced intermediate to advanced hands-on Pro Stitcher class, we will be manipulating designs from our Art and Stitch library as well as our Pro Stitcher library. We ll be working them in new ways by creating multiple area isolations and cropping to liven up our quilting. SS-6 (hands-on, Sweet Sixteen): Appliqué, Thread Painting, and Quilting (taught by Beverly Burton) Students will create a 6" x 9" quilted postcard or wall hanging using raw-edged appliqué. You ll then embellish the appliqué with thread painting and background quilting. This is the perfect opportunity to unleash the inner art quilter hidden inside. LA-6 (hands-on, HQ Avanté): Raw-edge Appliqué (taught by Cheryl Duncan) All of the fun none of the work. Did you know that you can use your long arm to do raw edge appliqué? Learn how to in this fun class. You ll use bright fabrics, quick tricks, a glue stick and new ruler skills to create your own Dresden Plate sampler that can be made into a quick, darling pillow. Don t miss the fun! LD-8 (lecture demo): Taming Pieced Backs (taught by Ebony Love) Preparing a quilt for long arm quilting isn t always as easy as it sounds, especially if the backing is pieced and not square. Conquer your fear of quilting with pieced backs, learn the principles of a good pieced back, techniques for fixing wonky ones, and squaring large backs for loading. LD-12 (lecture demo): Longarm Appliqué Two Ways (taught by Mary Beth Krapil) Learn the techniques of raw edge applique and reverse applique done right on the frame while creating a wonderful piece that can be made into a pillow or tote bag or wall hanging. We'll even do a little couching! PS-11 (lecture demo): The Many Uses of Start and End Points in HQ Pro-Stitcher (taught by Vicki Hoth) There are so many ways that changing the Start and End Points in HQ Pro-Stitcher can change your quilting experience. This class reviews how to quickly and easily recover from thread breaks once you 8

9 understand Start and End Points. What s more, you ll be editing designs on the screen and even creating new designs from existing digital motifs. Vicki will share many tips for using Start and End Points. Saturday, June 20, 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM PS-7 (hands-on, HQ Pro- Stitcher): Boot-Kicking Couching (taught by Marie Eldredge) Make it dazzle. Make it Bling. Jazz it up with a little string. Quilt E2E magic and blocks that scream, Even borders can be couched seam to seam. That s right- - couching with your Pro-Stitcher is really a dream! SS-7 (hands-on, Sweet Sixteen): Make a Couched Purse (taught by Diane Henry) Use the Handi Quilter couching feet to decorate a fun and easy over-the-shoulder bag. You ll have several yarn / color options to choose from. 9

10 LA-7 (hands-on, HQ Avanté): Let Me Call You Sweetheart (taught by Debby Brown) This class is all heart. Students will learn how to quilt feathered heart blocks, as well as several background heart designs and free-hand heart designs. LD-13 (lecture demo): Everything you wanted to know about starting a longarm quilting business (taught by Angela Walters) If you have ever considered starting a machine-quilting business, or need ideas for how to grow your business, join Angela in this session. Angela will share what she has learned through trial and error as she has grown her business. Her goal is to encourage, inspire and educate professional machine quilters. Be sure to come with questions! PS-12 (lecture demo): The Magic of Crop (taught by Elaine Gilmore) In this class learn how to rework designs from our library. Cut this, paste that and connect into all new edge to edge patterns, borders and motifs. This will open your eyes to new ways to look at the designs you already own and how they can become something brand new using many of the popular features in HQ Pro-Stitcher. AS-5 (lecture demo): Meander Anything (and I do mean anything ) (taught by Linda Matteotti) Using the meander anything template included with Art & Stitch, you can create your own pantograph or edge-to-edge quilting design with a motif or word of your choice. Imagine a set of placemats for newlyweds with their names appearing among the loops and swirls. Or a baby quilt with the child s name or favorite character appearing randomly. There are so many possibilities. Saturday, June 20, 10:15 AM to 12:15 PM PS-8: Mini Charm Squares Chevron Placemat (taught by Vicki Hoth) Zig and zag your way through class using the Mark tool to make this fun placemat. Who knew that Mark could be such a great tool for straight line quilting instead of rulers. You will quilt this entire placemat by piecing it on the longarm and then use Mark to fill in the spaces. Mark will be your new best friend. 10

11 SS-8: One Line at a Time (taught by Charlotte Warr Andersen) Use simple geometric shapes (squares, zigzags, half-circles) to form intricate designs using rulers and templates that make the job fun and easy. We ll sit down to the HQ Sweet Sixteen to create fills that make fascinating textural repeats and make great backgrounds to surround your fancier motifs. LA-8: Stained Glass with Couching (taught by Mary Beth Krapil) Create a stained glass quilt using the fabulous new HQ couching feet. LD-14 (lecture demo): Fabulously Fun Free-motion Fills (taught by Angela Walters) Be inspired to try new free-motion background fills such as plume feathers, swirls with hooks, feather meanders, pebbles and peapods, paisley feathers, and more! Angela will talk through the designs, identify potential problems, and help you gain confidence to add them to your quilting techniques. 11

12 PS-13 (lecture demo): Using Freehand, Mark, and Record (taught by Marie Eldredge) Do you understand the possibilities of Freehand? Mark? Record? Motors vs. Machine? Connect multiple designs for a border that stitches continuous. Make an E2E from a child s drawing, an element in the fabric or a design of your own. Make nested E2E designs, continuous line background fills or create simple E2E for holidays. It s as easy as tracing a picture from a coloring book. 12
