Welcome to the Handi Quilter Education Webinar February 14, 2013 Finishing Quilts by Committee While you re waiting for the Webinar to begin, make sure your computer speakers are on, so you will be able to hear us.

Your presenters today are Vicki Hoth, Marie Eldredge, Cheryl Duncan, and Angie Balling Handi Quilter Studio Educators

February 14 th Webinar Quilt by Committee Let us help you get your quilts finished.

February 14 th Webinar Quilt by Committee You get to be part of the committee. During the Webinar you will have the opportunity to type in your suggestions. Keep in mind that all quilters have good ideas, and we would love to share them all, but please don t be offended if we get overwhelmed and miss some. Happy Valentine s Day. Hope you all have lots of fun, we love sharing this day with all of you amazing quilters.

Create ideas for borders and blocks. Draw out your ideas on paper, dry erase board or Preview Paper to determine the best designs for the quilt. The winner!

This sketch became this quilting design

Triangle sketches These sketches were used in the outside border.after auditioning many triangles ideas

I created a template by folding paper as you would to create snowflakes.

Quilting ideas for the blocks using the snowflake template

The Winner!

Border Block

It is time to see your quilts

Trish Barnes Trish owns an HQ machine with HQ Pro-Stitcher There are appliqued flowers and butterfly's in purple border which could be stitched in the ditch. Stitch in the ditch around appliqued children

Out side border is stripes which could be stitched in the ditch creating a piano key design using the Pro-Stitcher s channel lock. If not comfortable using rulers you could do a serpentine stitch over the seams.

Kathy Valladon I would really like some help on the star portion of this quilt. These are 11 inch half square triangles. I have the HQ 18 Avanté with the Pro-Stitcher. I do not do any free style quilting. I use the Pro-Stitcher exclusively. Use yellow thread on the yellow and trade to blue for the blue points. Or Because the fabrics are more in the pastel colors, white thread could also be used.

You could use two triangle feather designs in the star points. Then fill the yellow border with the same triangle design repeated and reversed. The outside floral border could be just a continuous design since the fabric is a busy print.

You could use two triangle feather designs in the star points. Then fill the yellow border with the same triangle design repeated and reversed.

Marsha Walper Marsha owns a Sweet Sixteen sit-down machine. She said The smaller blocks on the sampler seem manageable once I quilt in the ditch along the sashing strips, but I have no idea how to quilt the large block in the center. I would like some continuity between the blocks, but do not want an overall design. I have the Versa Tool and the Straight Edge Ruler as well as the Open-toe Hopping Foot.

The four corners are the same which should be quilted alike. There are 4 blocks with a pinwheel look, that could be quilted with a spinning design for motion. The background fill quilting, in the white areas, could be the same, such as stippling, making all of the blocks similar. The other blocks could have continuous curve to soften the quilt.

This a very traditional quilt, feathers would work to soften the square blocks. Use the same style of flowers or feathers throughout the quilt to create uniformity.

Kathy Valladon This is a table runner. My client thought I might need to quilt it before she does the applique. Thanks for any help you can share! I have the HQ 18 Avanté with Pro-Stitcher. I have NEVER done any free style quilting. I would rate my skill level as confident intermediate. I do hope to start learning ruler work in the next few months. Suggestions: You may want to quilt this AFTER the applique is done, or just do an edge to edge in those areas. Cross hatch through the whole table runner and then add the applique. Continuous curved lines through the pieced blocks and do a fill through all the cream fabric.

Use the same fill throughout. The block is very traditional piecing. Add feathers or any type of motif in the piecing areas.

Marilyn Baker I own an HQ18. I have only been quilting with a long arm and quilting in general for two years, so I am still a newbie. I'm still intimidated by my long arm..., maybe feather stencils, the circular ones and maybe more information on what speeds you use on the HQ for different techniques.

Notice the green block under the star block. Use quilting to emphasize that block

Notice the green block under the star block. Use quilting to emphasize that block Fills in the white blocks could be crosshatching, pebbles, motifs, feathers or stippling.

Use the star borders to stitch out beautiful feathers or ferns. Use arcs in the green bocks to soften the squares. Echo the star in the white to give more definition.

Rachel Zerwekh I really love the colors, how it came together but have no idea of how to quilt it or the color or type of thread to use. I have an HQ 16 with Pro Stitcher.

This quilt could be quilted Edge to Edge with an orange or rust color thread. If Rachel chooses to do custom quilting she could ruler work the arrow type blocks, defining each color by stitch in the ditch, and fill in the solid blocks with a Pro-Stitcher design repeated in rows or one large design per block. She could use repetitive designs through out, such as small circles, lines or ribbon candy and give it a modern look. You could soften up the straight lines by adding ferns. You could crosshatch in the arrow blocks.

Monofilament thread would be a good choice if you want the texture to show without upstaging the piecing. You could use any motif repeated throughout the arrow blocks. Straight line quilting works well in the solid blocks because the fabric has already done the marking for you.

Linda Crawford Linda owns an HQ 18 Avanté with an HQ Pro-Stitcher. She feels her quilting ability is medium. This is being quilted for a men's clothing store. 1. The fan blocks are ties. 2. This quilt has a lot of quilting property. The quilting will stand out in the white fabric.

It could be quilted traditional because the colors, prints, and fan pattern are very traditional.

It could be quilted in a modern way with arcs, pebbles, squiggles, or echoing to change the style of the quilt.

Kathy DeStadio I have an HQ 18 Avanté with the new Pro-Stitcher. My quilting ability should be considered novice. I have many of the HQ rulers and some day want to learn to use them. Suggestion: Since you own an HQ 18 Avanté with the Pro-Stitcher this quilt could be stitched edge to edge with a design such as Square Spiral from Golden Threads Edge to Edge Collection 2. (This is a digital design.)

Another design that would work well is Celtic Scroll from Golden Threads in Edge to Edge Collection 2. (This is a digital design)

You could define each block area with a motif or an overall fill.

Lurene Cannon This is the Latte Quilt by Kerrie Hay. Every block is embroidered on satin or cotton sateen. This a queen size quilt. My husband wants me to wait on quilting this top until I get more experience. I would appreciate your suggestions.

The center fabric looks as if it has a crosshatch pattern in it. Repeat that pattern throughout each block as a background and stitch in the ditch around the embroidery design. Use a very fine thread such as #100 silk thread from YLI or Superior.

This quilt definitely calls for feathers. There are many different styles of feathers and many ways to orient them. There are many Feather Stencils from Golden Threads that would enhance this quilt. Golden Threads The Art of Feather Quilting or Feather Mania are great pattern packets from Judy Allen that would give some beautiful designs for this quilt. Use Golden Threads Paper to copy the designs, quilt on or quilt through to get the accuracy you desire.

Joan Goldfarb I have the HQ Sweet 16 with TruStitch. I am a novice. I have some of the rulers (Versa Tool and the half circle set) and also would like to learn more work with stencils.

Use the colors of the quilt to stitch an echo, following the curves of the design in the quilt.

Your quilting will really show in the light colored fabrics. Create motion by stitching ferns, feathers, or leaves, or use a different design in each color. Define the cream areas with a quilting motif.

Martha Ober I own an HQ 18 Avanté I have a backing that matches the background of the applique block and had planned to use a thread that blends with this fabric or maybe a bit darker so it shows up a bit more on the backing. I need a suggestion on this as well as the actual quilting. I have been giving thought to echo quilting around the flowers and stem, doing some pebbling on the ground area and steps. I also thought of crosshatching on the border but have no idea what to do on the log cabin blocks. The pattern is from a book called. "You're Invited" by Barb Adams and Alma Allen of Blackbird Designs. The pattern is called Chelsea Cottage. Thread suggestion: Match the background fabric.

Block ideas: Stitch motifs such as a square feather wreath. Square stencil motif. Stitch in the ditch Border ideas

Martha Ober I have had this stained glass French braid done for at least 5 years. I do not want to spoil the look of the glass by quilting thru it but not sure other than stitching in the ditch how I should quilt it. I don't know what to do in the large border type areas. This quilt is from the book French Braid Quilts by Jane Hardy Miller with Arlene Netten.

Tip: Be careful to have the same density of quilting throughout the quilt. You could stitch in the stained glass area, matching thread color to fabric color and it would not take away from the stained glass area. You could use monofilament thread throughout and it would not distract from the design.

Jenna na Borcherding This is a donation/raffle quilt. I have an HQ 18 Avanté I have an HQ Pro-Stitcher and I am comfortable with Pro-Stitcher, but not so much with free hand. This fabric seems to have an oriental feel. This quilt would be great to use an edge to edge design with because the colors are similar in value. Oriental Clouds from Golden Threads Digitized Quilting Designs Edge to Edge Collection 3 would be nice on this quilt.

Paula Rudolph The customer has the purple border, mitered but just wants piano keys around this part & the size can be determined by the machine. I have the HQ18 Avanté with the newest Pro-Stitcher update.

Robin Rodriquez I have an HQ Sixteen and no Pro-Stitcher. I am pretty much a beginner. I would like to learn how to use all of the tools and rulers

This is one of those quilts where an edge to edge design would just add nice texture to the quilt. Depending on who you are quilting it for, you may not want to custom quilt. But Look at the fun you could have using rulers and templates, or freehand quilting in each twist.

Diane Skinner I have the HQ Sweet Sixteen, and I ve only had it for about 4 or 5 months. I have been quilting about 8 years I am maybe an advanced beginner I have stencils and rulers.

Quilt one design in each color. You could change thread colors to exaggerate the designs. Use one of the designs in the border to unify. This quilt could be quilted in a modern or a traditional theme.

Bonnie Wonky One-Block Quilts by Marlous Carter... Quilt titled Flights of Fancy...Cotton Reel Block Here is a quilt that is hanging in my quilt studio waiting for inspiration. It s one of three quilts that I am making for a family that lost their parents last year. It includes some clothing fabric from their Mom. This is made for the oldest child (40 something) who loves Ta-tas! a-hem... ) So I intentionally made the blocks to look like bras!!! I hope to add a few embellishments, nothing gaudy, but want to figure out the quilting first! I have an HQ Sweet Sixteen.

You could use one design throughout, or make each one unique.

Betsy Vinegrad This quilt is 30" square. I have a new HQ Sweet 16 sit down. I'd like to use rulers or templates for this quilt. Suggestion: If you want to use rulers and become confident then we would suggest you stitch in the ditch to define all the spikes.

Some ideas if you don t want to stitch in the ditch.

Andra Stanton I am learning to use an HQ Sweet 16. I m new to free-motion quilting. Since I m new to free motion quilting, everything is new! I d like to become proficient at basic stippling and microstippling, and also circles stippling and water stippling, but I also love the idea of taking a line/design from the fabric I ve used and echo it in some way. Or outlining shading/colors in the fabric. I m less interested in precision in precise lines like piano keys or precise circles or half-circles like clamshells. I like vines and leaves but not flowers (in most cases).

These quilts are great for modern quilting designs quilted edge to edge. If you want to define the stripes then quilt circles, or squiggles in rows. These quilts are great to practice with lots of different designs and become proficient in quilting.

These quilts are great for modern quilting designs quilted edge to edge. If you want to define the stripes then quilt circles, or squiggles in rows. These quilts are great to practice with lots of different designs and become proficient in quilting.

Quilt by Committee Edge to Edge with white thread would work for this. OR Define a square using rulers and create a new block.

Quilt by Committee But all of that white fabric is just calling for some great quilting that will really make this quilt look incredible. Since it has a lot of straight lines, feathers or curves would soften those lines. You could do continuous feather design across the square white blocks and into the flower blocks.

Quilt by Committee Loretta Baker says this is a stumper. Wow, look at all that white fabric. At Handi Quilter we call that Open Quilting Property Tip: If you want your quilting to show or pop use solid color fabric or light colors.

Quilt by Committee This quilt just calls for lots of feathers. Crosshatching will really show too. Use matching thread (Blue) to stitch in the blue. You could stitch in the ditch around all the blue squares let the blue squares pop.
