Meet our Summer School Teachers Jane MacDonald Jane MacDonald has been interested in Japanese textiles crafts for over twenty years, developing a specialty in the craft of sashiko stitching design.

Jane is renowned as a patient teacher who is diligent in providing an enjoyable learning environment for all levels abilities.

Rachelle Denneny Rachelle grew up in the Flinders Ranges in SA moved to Adelaide when she was 18 years old, working as a Florist from the time she left school.

She is an experienced teacher with classes for all skill levels ranging from Beginners, Machine Applique, Mystery Days Precut Quilt Classes.

2 Meet our Summer School Teachers Jane MacDonald Jane MacDonald has been interested in Japanese textiles crafts for over twenty years, developing a specialty in the craft of sashiko stitching design. Initially drawn to the quality detail in the workmanship of Japanese textiles, Jane now teaches sashiko extensively throughout Australia internationally. Jane is renowned as a patient teacher who is diligent in providing an enjoyable learning environment for all levels abilities. Jane likes to inspire students with original ideas techniques in the gentle craft of sashiko, branching into other forms of sashiko including one stitch sashiko, boroinspired designs kogin stitching. Rachelle Denneny Rachelle grew up in the Flinders Ranges in SA moved to Adelaide when she was 18 years old, working as a Florist from the time she left school. She is now a mum to three kids ages 13, has been quilting for approx. 15 years teaching for 10 of those. She has won multiple awards for her quilts both here in Australia overseas. She is an experienced teacher with classes for all skill levels ranging from Beginners, Machine Applique, Mystery Days Precut Quilt Classes. Specializing in Machine Quilting from an Introduction Class through to Feathers, Trapunto Grid work. Mary Hitchens Mary s loves are all things h done. Applique by needle turn, reverse, blanket stitch, layered cut back etc. H paper piecing also feature in her work along with a deep love of reproduction hexagon quilts. Mary was the winner of the prestigious 2011 Rajah award at AQC, is a wellknown teacher tireless guild worker. A highlight of her quilting career was creating the renowned Mary McKillop quilt which now resides in the Mary Mackillop Museum in Sydney. Carol Nicholls Carol is the owner of Sewn Quilted, a patchwork shop which opened around 6 years ago. Her love of all things patchwork has spanned the last 20 years, started when she took a patchwork course while living in the USA. She has developed a vast array of patchwork skills over the years, is passionate about passing on her knowledge to students of all levels. While she has a love of h piecing, applique machine piecing, she also specializes in Foundation Paper Piecing, with Sewn Quilted being a Certified Quiltworx Shop for the past 5 years. More recently, Carol has been having a lot of fun teaching fabric covered boxes notebooks!

3 Classes with Jane MacDonald 2day class: Sashiko Monday 15 th & Tuesday 16 th This is a sample based technique workshop that covers some aspects of Sashiko including how to transfer a pattern, the simple techniques to achieve the grain of rice look. Also covered is Hitomezashi (one stitch Sashiko) which is easy enjoyable to do, also Koginzachi which is a technique from the North West of Japan The projects below will be covered in the class: $195 2day class: Boro Wednesday 17 th & Thursday 18 th Learn to make a Boro inspired Kinchaku drawstring bag. Choice of two colourways. Or choose to make the reversible loop bag. Patterns are provided for all options, some of the elements made in the Sashiko class can be incorporated into these bags if you choose. $195

Classes with Rachelle Denneny 1day class: Free Motion Quilting Monday 22 nd This class is designed for beginners or those who need a little more encouragement confidence.

We will touch on straight line ditch stitching we will discuss needles, threads, tension, basting marking your quilt.

1day class: Grid it, Quilt it Tuesday 23 rd This class is suitable for those with some free motion experience. This class will show you how to use grids to plan quilt your quilts.

Some free motion experience is required (the class offered on Monday 22/1 would be sufficient experience to take this class) 1day class: Fancy a Feather Wednesday 24 th Do you love quilted feathers?

4 Classes with Rachelle Denneny 1day class: Free Motion Quilting Monday 22 nd This class is designed for beginners or those who need a little more encouragement confidence. Let s lower the feed dogs to begin an exciting new journey, learn how much fun free motion quilting can be. This class will cover the basic you need to know to get started. We will touch on straight line ditch stitching we will discuss needles, threads, tension, basting marking your quilt. This class will show you how to use grids to plan quilt your quilts. There are endless possibilities using grids to create beautiful designs that can be used for background fillers, borders pieced blocks. Some free motion experience is required (the class offered on Monday 22/1 would be sufficient experience to take this class) 1day class: Fancy a Feather Wednesday 24 th Do you love quilted feathers? This class will show you how to draw them, sew them fit them into spaces. Fancy, free, fillers formal, feathers are fun beautiful once you know how. Some Free motion experience is required (the class offered on Monday 22/1 or Tuesday 23/1 would be sufficient experience to take this class) 1day class: Machine Applique Class Thursday 25 th This class is suitable for any skill level. Do you love the look of needle turned applique, but would like to learn how to do it by machine? Come along learn the techniques Rachelle has used in her awardwinning applique quilts. Mary has presented this quilt in two colourways, one in the Dutch Heritage style of fabrics the other using modern styles of fabric. However, this year we are also offering the option of working on some of our Block of the Month quilts: Getting to Know Hue or While the Cat s Away (machine piecing aspect). These classes are suitable for all skill levels if you have never tackled Foundation Piecing before, or you ve had a go but couldn t quite get it, right through to those who are confident with the process are ready to start a new project. Wherever you re at with your Foundation Piecing we d love to have you come along join us. The great thing about having a 5day class or a 3day class (or both!) is that you get dedicated sewing time to really conquer the FPP technique or more challenging piecing techniques in the BOM programs, to make great headway with your project. 7 General Information Payment information: To confirm your spot, a nonrefundable deposit of $50 is required. The balance due may be paid off in $100 increments each month (see payment schedule on enrolment form). Full payment is due by Friday 15/12/17. In addition to the cost of each course you will need to purchase a pattern your choice of kit or fabrics, any equipment required to make the kit/quilt etc. Payments (less $50 deposit) are refundable only up to 31 st December, After this time, no refunds will be made. If you are unable to attend for any reason, you are welcome to transfer your enrolment to another person, but please underst this is the responsibility of the person enrolled. Where: One Community Church, 184 Surrey Road, Blackburn, Vic 3130 (opp. Blackburn Primary) This is a fantastic venue airconditioned, on the ground floor with no stairs involved to access the classrooms. There is plenty of onsite all day parking. The classrooms will be secured each evening enabling you to leave your machine/sewing work area set up for the entire duration of each course if you are attending for more than 1 day. Class Times: Formal tuition times will be each day (4.30pm for Rachelle s classes) Registration will be from 9.40am on day 1 of each class, the classroom/s will be open from 9.45am each subsequent day for settle in time prior to the classes commencing at 10am. For your convenience, there will also be optional extended sewing time until 5.30pm available Mon Thurs the first week, Mon Wed the second week! No teaching during these times, however if you wish to do some extra work on your project, this will provide the perfect opportunity for you to do so. Refreshments/Meals: Morning & afternoon tea each day, ongoing tea coffee are all provided for you! You will need to provide your own lunch however there are nearby shops, an onsite café (which we hope will have reopened after their summer break!) Accommodation: If you are travelling from a distance require accommodation, there are a number of nearby places that may be suitable for you to stay. Please check for motels bed breakfast in nearby suburbs. Thursday evening dinner: For anyone interested, we will again be organising our very popular dinner out on Thursday evening 18/1 at the Blackburn Hotel. This is optional will be at your own cost, but it is a great way to celebrate the week! Husbs/partners welcome to join us too!
