3 Quilt Atlantic 2018 Workshop Descriptions Friday April 6: Choose one of three Workshop Options offered 2:00pm 5:00pm Part I: The Butterfly (Insect Fibre Art) with Karen Miller Curiosity led me try new ideas/ techniques to make the best use of fabrics, yarns and other fibres to obtain my goal for that particular piece and that is how I create all my work and what I will share with you in these workshops. PART I: The Butterfly - will be life size. You will be layering and overstitching and a supply list will follow. The insect will be a combination of layering different fabrics to obtain the natural look. You will be fusing, machine stitching (free motion or slowly following wing veins using normal stitching) and a under body (in the kit) which you will then attach to the wings. This is how the bark pieces began. Actually it was the Luna moth that made me figure it out but in the end I am not sure the bark result isn t artistry better than the moths! Lesson learned: You never know where a piece is going until it is done and others view it. It is their reactions that tell the truth. Normal sewing supplies, sewing machine in good working order Threads - suggesting soft moss green or taupes or even a soft lilac. Some may prefer to use Wonderfil. Bring at least 2 different shades/colours to give you variety on the wings. Fray check Frixion pen or other marker that will disappear when no longer wanted. Join a self-confessed gadget geek as we go on a pretend shopping trip to find great quilting tools, inexpensive substitutes for quilt shop items, and products that were never intended to be used for quilting, but should have been. Throughout this presentation, you will be able to test drive many gadgets - bet you ll find some new favourites! A take-home list of the gadgets viewed and buying sources will be made available for students. Any needed supplies will be provided. 4 Picnic Placemats with Karen Henry Suitable for those who are familiar with rotary cutting and have some quilting experience. Students will create two lovely placemats ready for plating! The sides contain pockets for your matching napkins and cutlery. Roll the placemats up, tie and stow for your outing. For your focal point choose an 8 x 8 image to be surrounded by accent colours or patterns. Supply List for Two Placemats: Center Block 2 8 x 8 Fussy cut blocks These two blocks should be the stand out fabrics for your placemats. Border, Binding, Ties & Napkin 1.1 meters An accent fabric to frame your center block & napkin. Background -.5 meters The outside framework for your block. This could be another print to accent the center block. Backing.4 meter Bat 2 14 x 19 Sewing Machine in good working order with manual and quilting attachments (free motion and walking foot) Basic Sewing Kit Threads to match/enhance placemats Rotary Cutter, mat and ruler Chalk Pencil or Blue Washout Marker (must show on fabrics) Basting Spray or safety pins Have questions or want to contact Karen before the Retreat? Saturday April 7: Choose one of the following full date Workshops offered from 9-12 noon & 2-5pm Part II: The Bark for the Butterfly (Insect Fibre Art) with Karen Miller This workshop is suitable for all levels. PART II: The Bark for your Butterfly (Part I is a prerequisite) To create this total piece, Day 2 you will work on the bark, pleating, hand stitching then over felting. Adding embellishments of texture, colours and linear movement you will have a great base (we will work on a manageable piece to allow you to complete it that day). And it will appear to be a slice of a small tree trunk. If time allows, and you are inclined you can bind the edges by machine. I will supply information on making a base (armature) that supports the work on a wall or free standing. My goal is for you to enjoy the experience of something totally different and stretch yourself to make it yours as you work through the project. No two will be the same that is for sure. Supply List (items you should bring along): Foam (firm to touch) at least 2 thick and large enough to support to good portion of the bark

5 as you felt (approximately 10 x 10 ) Normal sewing supplies, hand sewing needles, scissors, machine not necessary for most of the project but bring one, or share, to add the binding and velcro at the end if you wish. Thread in neutral shades of taupe/brown to disappear into the bark as you stitch. If you think you may have time at the end to sew the binding then bring some Velcro - (2 pcs 9 long x 1cm.) This attaches the work to the armature. This project will be completed by the time you leave other than mounting it on the support. I am working on simplifying the armature and will possibly have some for sale ready to attach your work. Kit Fee: $17.00 Consisting of the following: wool backing approx. 8 ½ x 9 bark fabric cotton backing fibres in natural colour and texture and yarns for accent and there will be extra to choose from and share. 2 fine felting needles ( they can break but I will bring extra you can purchase - $ tx - $2.30) each) Schematic for the armature to support the bark, if you wish to have it dimensional and possibly some completed bases for purchase. Reach Karen by at: fibreseams@gmail.com Jelly Roll Quilting with Carolyn Langley Carolyn is back to Quilt Atlantic once again to share with us her adventures in Jelly Roll Quilting. Nope you re not cooking in this workshop! Instead you ll be using one of the amazing precut Fabric Jelly Rolls" and perhaps a bit more fabric to quickly create your own quilt top. These jelly rolls are all precut at 2 ½ inches wide so much of the cutting is done for you. The pattern is provided for this quilt top. This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as experienced stitchers. More experienced stitchers may be able to complete this quilt top within the class time frame. Sewing machine in good working order ¼ inch sewing machine foot or the ability to set your needle to sew at ¼ inch. Rotary cutter, mat, 6 x 18" ruler...or at least one that long. Thread. One (1) forty piece (40) jelly roll, thread to blend, rotary cutter, ruler and board, fabric scissors, pins and usual sewing supplies. 2 yards of a dark fabric, or coordinating - this makes the inner border as well. 1 yd for outer border 3/4 yd for binding. 4 yds for backing

6 You can purchase everything at once or wait for the borders till later. Kits are not provided, bring along supplies noted above. A full day hooking workshop with Jane Steele of River House Rugs located in Petite Riviere, Nova Scotia. Jane has been busy creating exciting seascape designs inspired by White Point, and is delighted to return to Quilt Atlantic to share these with you. There will be several colourways and different sizes available to choose from, with prices varying accordingly starting at about $30 and going up from there. The kits will include lots of texture and interesting yarns and fibres to play with, plus shells and other adornments. Students bring their own hook and frame if they have one. Otherwise, ones will be provided for use just for the day, to be returned at the end of the class. Sunday April 8: Lecture for Everyone, 9:30-11:30am Landscape Quilts Lecture with Karen Henry - Where do I start? Karen s resume is extensive and we are thrilled to have her join us once again. This lecture is open to all levels of quilters and fibre artists. Fresh from her travels to Quilt Canada 2017 and to a recent teaching adventure in Qatar, Karen offers a wealth of knowledge to share with us. This lecture is intended for those interested in designing their own landscape quilts but are not sure how to begin. The lecture will cover designing the pattern itself and discuss a variety of enlarging techniques. Participants will learn how adding and subtracting from your original idea may improve the overall project: What should I take out that awful telephone pole? Will adding or subtracting lines from the piece in areas detract from the main focus of my quilt? The lecture will cover the colour wheel and fabric selection evolving into techniques for creating the actual art quilt painting, applique, piecing, or embellishing, etc. Attendees will have a basic framework for initiating their own textile piece.
