7 SPOTLIGHT ON OUR MEMBERS Lorretta Erwin, aka Smokey When did you join the Havasu Stitchers? I joined Havasu Stitchers in December How long have you been quilting, do you have a particular style, or just all of it!? I started quilting about three years ago, however I did start a quilt back in 1995 when I bought my new Viking #1. I got the top done, the batting and back on, then start the quilting process of hand stitching it. Got it about have done and put it up for 15 years. Then when my girl friend helped me make my first rag quilt I guess that inspired me to finish my Adirondack quilt from 15 years prior. So I finish the hand stitching and now I know the error's of Quilting. HA! HA!. I don't have a particular style that I like. Just some appeal more to me than others and some I just don't like at all. If I see a pattern I like I do it. I try to improve with each one that I do and try to do a different method each time I make a quilt. Right now I want to do memory quilts for my grand children which I have 9 and 3 great grandchildren. I did start a quilt for one of my granddaughter's but that was short lived as I couldn't get her Mom (my daughter) to get the material I wanted. Any way as I got the material all cut and started to assemble I found out I was going about it wrong. I am a little more educated on the subject now so I will do it right when I start them. I have seen some very beautiful quilts and I like challenges but don't have enough confidence in myself to tackle some of them. For now I tend to stay with the more easier quilts. I just finished the class at Jon Ali, making the French Rose with a Twist and really like the method of quilt as you go. I would like to learn how to machine quilt. But it takes practice and time. Is quilting in the family? Many years ago my grandmother hand quilted but I was very young then and not able for her to teach. My mother sowed but not very much. When my children where small I sewed a lot of there clothes. Then went to work and stopped sewing. Now that I am retired I have more time and it has become a pleasure that I enjoy. Do you do any other type of sewing, crafts? I use to do decorative painting and T-shirt painting but no longer do that. I realize now after getting rid of my painting tools I could have use them to do quilting. So this is another of my dumb things I ve done. OH Well!! How long have you been in Lake Havasu? I have been in Lake Havasu since 1979, moved back to Oregon in 1983 and back to Havasu Then in 1995 we moved to Bend Oregon. In 2000 we moved to Las Vegas and in 2007, moved to Havasu again and this is where we retired to. We originally move to Havasu to be closer to our family (parents and siblings.) I am not currently involved in and community groups right now as we only live in Havasu six months a year. We live in Utah 6 months during the summer. Involved in any community groups? What is your favorite charity? My favorite charity is St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and The Wounded Warriors Project. 7

Items Wanted We received many suggestions for what we need to sell in our boutique booth: Curling Iron Holder Fabric with inner silver lining. Knitting Needles Holder the kind you where you would put the needles in slots and then roll it up. Carolyn Victor has an example. In looking at our pie carriers, they said they wanted a 9 x 13 cake pan holder. Dish Soap Bottle Dress/Apron French Press Cover (like a tea cozy but for the coffee press) PUPPY PILLOWS We will have a box at every meeting to collect the scraps. Keep clean fabric scraps NO batting in a clean large plastic zipper bag or clean container. Just keep them handy so when we meet, you can just pull the bag out and drop it off at our pick up point. We need people to cut up pieces and stuff. We need people to sew up the pillow coverings (outsides). We will provide the fabrics. Please bring your machine and be ready to have fun and make some dogs and cats very happy and comfy. All you need to do is bring your sewing machine, rotary cutter, $5.00 for rent, and any fabric you might have that can be used for the pillow covers. Please do not take any scraps or fabric to Jon Ali's prior to the sew session. Chris does not have storage space. Future dates are March 20 (Thursday) 5p.m. to 9p.m. April 6 (Sunday) 10-?) I think we are the only group that makes the pillows for the Humane Society. We REALLY need your help in making these items. Thanks. Thanks Karm Webert 8

10 HAVASU STITCHERS GENERAL MEETING Mohave Community College, Room 600 February 13, 2014 Please welcome Larry Gonzalez (909) from RETRO Clean: Visit their website at Started back in 2004 Mindy is a hand quilting instructor 1850 his family settled in Glendale Larry and Mindy met there married 38 years Mindy loves vintage fabric and was looking for ways to clean these fabrics safely and effectively The company now sells on a national level and has been reviewed in 15 magazines Their products work on wedding dresses, vintage fabrics, etc. TEXTILE CARE AND PRESERVATION: Extra care is needed for special quilts, vintage clothes, lace, napkins, etc. if you want them to survive Pictures shown of a 1930 s quilt top with terrible water damage; hanky damaged with cedar chest oils Washing Vintage Quilts and Textiles: Assess the piece some of the fabric may have disintegrated before washing some stains (mold particularly) will cause the fabric to disintegrate if it gets wet If it can t be washed museums all around the world lay the piece on a table; lay a fiberglass screen over it; then vacuum it with a low level suction If you have signed quilts make sure you have used the right pen one that won t run When possible, pre wash fabric, cut a scrap, soak it in water, stick it in the microwave, and see if the color runs Synthrapal will absorb extra dye safe to move forward (make take twice) Can check an older quilt by rubbing a wet Q Tip in an inconspicuous area to check if the color runs Bathtub is a good spot for washing or a kiddie pool use a low suds soap, no dye, no softeners (leaves a residue), no fragrance, can use Retro Clean for washing; if it s a king sized quilt, lay a sheet in there first and get help for lifting Some people use vinegar to set dyes but Synthrapal strips off excess color which he prefers Don t use your washing machine for vintage fabric or if you do, don t turn it on! If you use Retro Clean, it rinses clean the first time Press the water out as much as possible; fold it into itself (be very careful about lifting it wet as the weight can pop seams) Unfold when damp; take it outside, lay on a quilt, lay another quilt on top so no direct sun on the quilt If you HAVE to use a dryer, use a dryer bag but best to air dry add a fan or two Lemons to remove stains can work but it can also backfire best to avoid Ironing Tips: Clean your iron regularly! Use an ironing pad to avoid scorching a vintage quilt Dry Cleaners can t guarantee their work because it involves solvents, heat and agitation best to avoid Starch is okay for fabrics in constant use but wash out before you store your fabrics and quilts Fabric Storage: Fabric storage more shelves and shorter stacks will reduce creasing Want to know what you have and where it is Comic Book Boards (acid free $12 for a package of 100) can be used to fold fabric to make them easy to see and will eliminate creases Dust and kitchen oils will cause brown fold lines so clean the surfaces of exposed fabric regularly Plastic bins seem good but they are made of plastic and the chemical is released as the plastic disintegrates and will yellow the fabric must use Polypropylene (will have a big 5 in a triangle) (Soft Structure TyVek sold in rolls look online easy to make into bags air gets through but water won t) Idea cover sliding closet doors in felt to create an instant design wall Fold lines and Brown Stains: Can be protein stains, unfinished shelves will transfer oils to the fabric; polyurethane will prevent that even painted shelves can cause problems and should be sealed Can use cotton fabric or acid free paper as a shelf liner 10

11 HAVASU STITCHERS GENERAL MEETING Mohave Community College, Room 600 February 13, 2014 How to fold a quilt for storage Wash your hands, remove jewelry, or wear gloves Tri fold and perhaps roll around a cotton sleeve wrapped swim noodle Don t stack quilts too high Can make sausages out of acid free tissue paper to place in folds to create soft folds instead of creases Can use acid free boxes but he s not convinced they have the ph right yet so be careful Storing Quilts Avoid warm, wet basements, and hot attics, sealed plastic bags Be careful where your mini fridge gives off heat and moisture one woman lost a whole closet of fabric Cedar chests should be lined with sheets of cotton Could stack 30 on a bed maybe a sheet between each one great spot to store with no creases! Displaying Quilts: Wall hanging a quilt can work but make sure the wood is sealed or use a cotton sleeve Don t nail quilts to wall creates holes and stains Velcro works sew the Velcro to a strip of cotton and hand stitch the cotton to the quilt and then use the Command strips to hang the Velcro on can hang that quilt on a spiral staircase Can use Magnetic Invisible Quilt Hangers (product for sale) Hang it Dang it another product a telescoping rod with a hook in the center it self levels Every 6 months vacuum quilts clean them another idea is display seasonal quilts that are changed quarterly Retro Clean Products: Basic directions Retro Clean ½ tsp of Retro Clean in a bowl let soak add hot water to keep it warm or set in the sun; put a plate on it to keep it submerged for 48 hours; rinse again and dry Archival Grade Tissue Paper Heirloom Storage Bags in four sized Pattern Pocket for history, washing instructions, etc. Make the bag out of the same fabric of the quilt (wash it whenever the quilt is washed) and 70 years from now, they ll have some extra fabric for quilt repair. Preservation Kit There s an online tutorial available on the website Quilting at the Lake: Profit this year almost $2,000! Looking for volunteers to put out fliers to RV parks every other month; also need a new Hostess Chair as Sandy Williams is moving to Hawaii Meeting Adjourned: 8:08 PM Respectfully Submitted, Sarah McNary 11
