1 The Village Quilter Guild Programs and Workshops, 2012 Workshop sign up contact: Dixie Johns Members who attended our January meeting were able to see samples of our next two speakers. We are privileged to have these two well known people from the quilt world booked for our guild. February s guest is Helen Frost Young. She has lectured and taught across America and throughout Europe. In 2001, along with her mother and often co author, Blanche Young, Helen was named one of the Women Who Challenged Quiltmaking. Helen has continued to develop quilting techniques and share those through teaching and publishing. March Helen will be teaching her Lone Star Sparkler table topper/ wall quilt She promises that this project is constructed with ease that guarantees success. I m still in the holiday mood and am thinking that before I put away my Christmas fabric box, I ll pull some for this project which before now was intimidating to me. I m game! Maggie Ball from Seattle, the expat Brit, will be sharing her speaking topic, Gateway to Mongolia. She will share her work in Mongolia teaching the women to quit as a form of revenue. She promises to bring along Mongolian artwork for her presentation and perhaps for our purchase. Maggie has published books, is in some of the current quilting magazines, and has tons of things on the internet and YouTube. The El Camino Guild had Maggie and their members had a very positive response. I sincerely regret that I ll be attending my mom s 104 (yes, 104) birthday that weekend and will not be able to attend. Perhaps one of our members who attends her workshop, will consider a teaching session for those of us unable to attend. Workshops start promptly at 9:00AM And are held at the Fallbrook Public Utility District 990 E. Mission, Fallbrook, CA 92028

2 President s Message February 2012 Greetings fellow quilters, Welcome to our new members joining in January. We have a wonderful friendly group. I am sure you will enjoy being a part of it. Thanks to Dixie for running the meeting in my absence last month. I had dinner with my sister s family before they returned home to England. Thanks to all who have signed up for white glove/ticket sales at Road to California. Your participation will make it possible for us to show other opportunity quilts at this wonderful annual show. We received a request from the American Cancer Society for a donation of a quilt for their up coming Go-Red-For-Women Luncheon in March. If you have a quilt made that you might like to donate to their auction, please see me for the donation form. The quilt must be received by February 15 th. In an effort to streamline the meeting, there will be a slight change in the way we draw our tickets at our monthly meetings. Ticket purchasers will write their name on the back of the drawing tickets. If you prefer, you may use printed address labels. Winning names will be called instead of numbers read. This will also give our new members an opportunity to learn people s names. Looking forward to seeing you all at our next meeting and seeing the lovely things you bring in for show and tell! 5 Block of the Month February 2012 Hard to believe Spring is right around the corner. But we re hoping these floral Asian fabrics will bring a smile to your cold quilting days. I created this pattern, although I am sure someone has probably published it somewhere already. I wanted to keep it as uncomplicated as possible, but still fun. Step 1. Sew the 3 inch Square to the 1-1/2 inch Strip and press. Make a total of two. Step 2. Sew a 3 inch square to the opposite side and press. Make a total of two. Step 3. Sew a 6-1/2 inch strip as shown : one in the middle and the remaining two on the top and bottom. Press after sewing each strip in place. Step 4. Sew an 8-1/2 inch strip to each side of the block and press. This illustration only shows one because my scanner is not large enough. Sew an 8-1/2 inch strip on both sides. Don t miss out on this month s BOM remember to bring your dollars, quarters, dimes, and nickels, we take it all. I would like to thank Nora Fusco so much for sharing the quilt she made with the winning BOM. It is great to see the creations from the efforts. Anyone else who has won please bring your finished (or not so finished) quilt projects to a guild meeting and share. Please feel free to send any questions or comments to: Sharon Baker (Bakegold@msn.com) or Jan Conklin (Jan.conklin@verizon.net)

6 Boutique project for the 2013 Quilt Show Even though it is almost 2 years away, we have started developing ideas of things to make for the Guild to sell in the NEW Holiday Fiber Arts Boutique at the next quilt show. If you have any ideas of your own---please bring a sample to the next meeting. We are also looking for donations of materials to use in making items. If you have any %wool felt in dark or bold colors or 100% wool fabric scraps or pieces you are willing to donate---we would appreciate it. Almost any color would be great. We are also looking for black, brown and tan tweed 100% wool fabric like in a man s sport jacket or a woman s skirt---good quality recycled fabric from garments should work. We are also still looking for any Christmas themed 100% cotton quilt fabric. At the next meeting, please stop by our table and take a look at our first Christmas ornament prototypes. They are made from wool felt and are cute as the dickens. We will have kits available to those interested in making a few for the Boutique. Please feel free to send any ideas, questions or comments to: Lou Cobb (louise.cobb@yahoo.com) Pam Wright (pam.psalm139@gmail.com) FALLEN HERO S POTHOLDER QUILT NEWS We re off to a good start with over thirty 8 block quilts under construction & kits for 60 more being prepared for members to pick up at the February guild meeting. Check the table display at future guild meetings for information about this unique project, and consider joining our group effort to construct a special quilted memorial banner in honor of those members of the military who resided in the greater San Diego area at the time of deployment but lost their lives in the current Wars of Terror. Kit fabrics are reproduction Civil War era prints and quilt construction similar to that used by Union sympathizers in the Civil War. Potholder quilt construction is a three month process. 1. Each potholder is a separate pieced, quilted and bound 8 quilt. Kits are provided and available at the guild meeting. These tiny quilts are constructed at home and brought back to the next guild meeting. 2. In exchange for returning a completed potholder, the quilter will receive a fallen hero name with directions for researching information about this person. The quilter will plan a short simple expression of appreciation to be written on the back of their potholder at the following guild meeting. 3. Micro-fabric marking pens, writing space and help will be provided so quilters can transcribe a message to the back of their potholder quilt during the meeting. We encourage participation from beginning to experienced quilters and can provide assistance as needed. Questions? Call Ann Harris at
