1 JANUARY 2011 The Village Quilter FUTURE PROGRAMS 2011 Guild Programs and Workshops January 6 th - Program: Cindy Needham, Threads Fact and Fiction Cindy has been a quilter for 39 years with expertise in both hand and machine quilting. Check Cindy s website ( to view some of her magnificent designs and quilting. Her Blog is also very informative, showing her special squaring up technique, and some cool tools. January 9 th - Workshop: Cindy Needham, Open Thread Bar This is a very popular class and one-of-a-kind! This class was designed to fill a void in the quilting community: thread education. The morning session teaches the student about thread quality, weight, tensions, needles, working with decorative threads and how to use different threads in design. The afternoon workshop treats the students to an "Open Thread Bar". Five cases of Superior Threads are available while the students learn how to use all types of threads at different tensions settings on their own sewing machines. A panel is created which they will use for reference at home. The focus is to educate students on how to use any and all kinds of threads in their machines, regardless of the manufacturer. February 3 rd - Program: Julia Zgliniec, Quilt Appraiser, What It Is and What It Isn t Julia Zgliniec, a founding member and former president of Quilt Visions, is a certified quilt appraiser. Learn about the appraisal process, what you should be concerned about. Are your old quilts valuable? Do you need to insure your quilts? Come and learn and enjoy her trunk show. February 5 th Workshop: Maria Landsbury, Fabric Dying and Resist This will be a hands on workshop where students will learn techniques of fabric dying and creating resist designs on fabric. March 5 th Program: Quilts of Love Construction Guild members will work together to assemble whole cloth baby quilts to be delivered to Camp Pendleton. Bring your sewing machine and work your friends to support this worthwhile project. Many hands working together can accomplish a great deal! 2 President s Message Happy New Year! May this year bring much joy to all of you as you learn new quilting techniques, make special quilts for those you love, and celebrate each completed quilt by sharing it with fellow quilters. One of my friends sent me a wish to have a quilting elf finish all my UFO s by Christmas Eve. I can assure you that did not happen, but I continue to make small dents in the UFO stash. Of course, projects are continuously being added to the UFO pile. A new year means we are halfway through the guild year. As I reflect on what we have done so far, I must tell you that this year has been rewarding for me. It is a pleasure to work with the talented women who were chosen to serve as board members and committee chairpersons. When a job needs to be done, each one simply rolls up her sleeves and does whatever is necessary to accomplish the task. We do have more to do. Mickey and Laura need volunteers to commit a little time to sell opportunity tickets. We need to fill the workshop classes, get our Log Cabin challenges completed and start to think about Quilt Show jobs we can do and offices we are eager to do next year. 4 Hospitality News December 2010 A very merry thank you to everyone that provided the delicious dishes for our holiday pot luck! What a wonderful array we had to choose from! We re sure it was enjoyed by all! We appreciate your participation in this annual event that gave us all such a nice beginning to the holiday season! Wow, 2011 is almost here how can this be possible? We would like to remind the following members who have volunteered to help us kick off the new year by providing refreshments in January: Louise Cobb, Veronica Davis, Cheryl Jeter, Linda Kacirek, Norma Kubota, Linda Musillami, Dianne Puckett, and JoAnn Rego. Thank you! Happy Holidays! Linda Palmer and Sue Burns BLOCK OF THE MONTH January Heart-Ache! Hard to believe we are in the midst of the Holiday season already! Thanks to those of you who played with the reindeer and penguins and gingerbread cookies! And thanks to those that brought them back. I know that Rosalie Thomas, Carol Kratzer and Barb Anderson will enjoy crafting projects from them! We loved making the Fresh Start block and having you buy them all up at our December potluck! Thanks for supporting your guild! It will be fun to have those as a backdrop for the First meeting of 2011! Since the January blocks will be our backdrop in February we (of course!) have to offer up something for Valentine s Day. So we ll grab another nine patch (we could do that all year!) for one, and something a bit more complex for the other. We ll try and have a picture of each block on the instructions to help you construct it! You will want one of each, so set aside two dollars right now and make sure you stop by early to get the Heart of your choice! The floral material that you submitted is wonderful! We are already planning how to entice you to sew up our BOM offerings for Spring! Our recycle request for this month is SOLID colors! We have so many prints that we need some calmer fabric to balance it out. So, please bring in any solid, tone-on-tone, or barely-patterned material you would like to offer up to the Block of the Month table. Hope one of your Resolutions for the New Year will be to always buy the Block of the Month block! And to help you keep that, here is your assignment, to be completed before the meeting on the 6th: Go through your stash and find some great and lovable-by-someone-else Solid-colored fabric that you would like to see recycled start a pile! Add to your pile one or two one dollar bills to purchase our Heart-Ache offering in January! (And a few other dollars to enter for other stuff!) Complete the Fresh Start blocks (and save the plastic bags back please??!!) from set it aside with your nametag, dollar bills and donation fabric and bring it all to the meeting! Our thanks! 5 Congratulations to Maria Landsbury who won the beautiful raffle quilt made by Bev King. Class Act! Joan Schooley, bereft owner of an art quilt that came up missing at the conclusion of our last Quilt Show, presented a very generous donation to the Guild. She wrote, The money the membership gave for my lost quilt is best spent for Opportunity Quilt tickets. I want the Guild to receive benefit. Thank you. No ticket stubs were included in her packet as she donated her offering. Joan's touching sentiment says volumes about her; many, many thanks back to you, Joan. 6 Sunshine Corner Several of our Guild members have been challenged with health issues and have suffered the loss of loved ones they need our prayers and support. Our sympathy goes out to the following guild members who have lost family members during this holiday season which makes the loss especially difficult. Past President Sarah Sandor s father died. Alta Jay s husband of 60 years and Mary Steckler s father, Jack Jay (88) died in December. We hope all the families find comfort in their memories and knowing the spirit lives eternally. Jessie Lee continues to have issues with her hip and needs another surgery next month. Nan Losee, a founding member who now lives in Williamsburg, Virginia entered an event of the American Quilt Study Group to develop a replica of a 19th century quilt. She chose a historical quilt in the Colonial Williamsburg collection, studied it and made a quilt about 1/4th size using 2212 small pieces of fabric. Her quilt was one of 24 chosen to be placed on tour at quilt shows and museums around the country. It will also be featured in a book to be published by the Kansas City Star publishers in the coming months. Many of our members benefited from her instruction in Palomar College quilting classes before she moved.
