1 Piecing it Together Newsletter JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2016 Dear Quilting Friends, We have really been enjoying some nice weather this month. Unfortunately, it s not going to last. So hurry up and get all those projects ready for some in-home quilting. Lots of fabric is coming in daily, and we re running out of room to put it. That s good for you because that means we have to make room. First, we re having our annual anniversary sale. The sale will be on Saturday, January 16 from 10am-5pm. EVERYTHING IN THE STORE WILL BE 30% OFF! If you miss the anniversary sale, come to the always-fun Superbowl Party on Sunday, February 7 from 12pm-4-pm. ALL FABRIC WILL BE %25 OFF. 3 THOUGHTS FROM QUILTERS From Mary Evers I have quilted on and off (more off than on I am afraid) for the last 20 years, but I am still a newbie at it! In fact, every time I go back to the sewing machine, I have to relearn it. I like to piece; not especially the quilting part. I don't know how you get all that material under the needle in the machine. All of my larger quilts I have sent to someone else to do the quilting and binding part. So, I would look for a simple project to do, and a streamlined one. Maybe a class that is a review of sewing/quilting techniques, but at the end of it you have a wall hanging or a table runner-something like that. Maybe an on-going class where we put together a block at each class, while practicing technique. Perhaps a class for a quilt-as-you-piece project? Something simple like log cabin. Also years ago, I did some paper piecing but now have forgotten how. I have looked at tutorials on-line, but I need hands-on help. I have a project sitting there I'd like to tackle. From Gerrie Orr For 2016 I am taking on a new technique - transferring photos to fabric. I am planning on making 3 memories quilts in honor of my sister-in-law, Cecelia, who lost her battle with liver cancer in November The three quilts will be given to my brother and two nieces. Josephine Barnett When I first started taking quilting classes, I found out how wonderful people who quilt really are. They share what they have, no one is ever rude, and I never heard a harsh word. I appreciate Vivian for always taking the time to show me how to make it better and for even letting me take one of her quilts home so I could remember how it was made. I had no real tools for quilting so thanks to Susan Taylor, who gave me a realy nice sewing machine. Acts of Kindness have happened to me so many times, and I am so grateful. So thanks to everyone who have shown me so much. And thank you Vivian for still encouraging me even though I stray from quilting for long periods of time. From Phyllis Jones I decided to share my fabric stash (or at least most of it) for the newsletter. This is a real, actual current picture of the shelves, except that I did hang up the Peanuts sign for fun!!! Years ago, I actually took a relatively accurate inventory counting yards of fabric on bolts, plus some other counting. But, I gave that up!! I am still using up some of the early stash that I began when I retired after 48 years of nursing. I named my business Sew What s Available since my mother sewed anything that was available, and re-used basting thread, and zippers, etc. As you can see from the variety of fabric I collect anything that is available and sew it when I am available! It has been serviced regularly. The last service was in late 2014 when the stitch count on the machine was 367,047. It has not been used since then. I am asking $3,450. In addition to its good lighting and large throat area, the 820 includes a built-in dual-feed system, automatic threading, automatic thread cutting, the free-hand system/presser foot lifter, a large free-arm, and a sliding guide on its table. The 820 uses a jumbo bobbin and this package includes 12 of them, as I purchased additional ones. The accessory box includes the following presser feet that were supplied with the machine: 1C reverse pattern foot; 1D reverse pattern foot; 3A automatic buttonhole foot with slide; 4D zipper foot; 5 blindstitch foot; 20C open embroidery foot; 37D patchwork foot; and 42 Bernina Stitch Regulator foot and attachments. It also comes with 10 additional presser feet. Lots more features! The machine is available for a test drive in my home, which is in the Swan Acres plan across from Northway Mall. You must take the training class (1 session, $75) before you can rent time on the shop s machine. We provide three leads which you can use again and again.
