1 October President s Corner Are you "NUTS about Quilting"? "Nuts about Quilting" was the theme of our guild's quilting retreat that was held Sept And it was a GREAT time. We had about 30 participants for the 4 days. We had a vendor each day: Thursday was Fabric Smart from Gulfport, Friday was Karis from The Modern Sewist, and Saturday we had a Massage Therapist. The quilt vendors gave demos and kits to purchase, there were games and door prizes each day, and lots of sharing. Also, TOPS donated a sewing machine won by Bobbie Spann. So, I want to give a BIG THANKS to Janice Dentler and Sheila Walker for an OUTSTANDING job. And, if you have not yet participated in a quilting retreat, I strongly encourage you to do so next year as not only is it a good time, but it is "quilting therapy". And, speaking of next year, we will need a volunteer or 2 to coordinate the retreat next year. Keep on quilting! Alison Parks We meet on the first Monday of each month at the Salvation Army, th Street E, just off SR70 west of 301 in Bradenton, FL. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. A $5 donation is appreciated from non-members visiting Guild meetings when we have outside speakers. October 1 October s meeting will feature Jerry Stube on mystery quilts. She ll have lots of examples to inspire you, and will also have a class on the following Saturday the 6th for a special mystery quilt designed just for us, so sign up at the meeting and Jerry will see that you get cutting instructions. Be sure to bring your show and tell, dogbed scraps and community service projects, and check out Jerry s class and Ellen Lindner s November class. See you there! 2 Minutes of September 3 Guild Meeting The meeting was opened by Vice President Mary Lewis. The previous minutes were accepted as printed in the newsletter. There were no new updates from the Treasurer. We currently have 125 members, with 35 being present at September s meeting. We welcomed one new member, Nancy Keegan, and were joined by seven visitors. Our community service group created 75 dog beds, 27 cat mats, donated 20 quilts to Rogers Bullock PreK as well as providing bibs for Alzheimer s patients! WOW! Thank you to all the members who participated. Members were reminded that all money for the upcoming retreat is due by September 4 th. Mary reviewed the program schedule for the remainder of the year. Jerry Stube will give a trunk show in October followed by a mystery quilt workshop on Oct. 6. Jerry explained the fabric requirements. The quilt will be 62 inches. Our November meeting will feature Ellen Lindner and December will be our annual Holiday party. If you have any ideas for the party, please see a board member. The date for our quilt show is February 14-15, Susan Fickey has agreed to co-chair with Carol Lipp. Several members have agreed to chair various committees, but there are many waiting to be filled. Please consider where you can participate. This event funds our programs for the following two years. Remember, many hands make light work! Besides, it is a lot of fun! At the close of our business meeting, members were given an education survey to complete. What presenters, techniques, and trends in quilting would you like to see at our meetings? These surveys will help our board plan for the future. Our presentation was given by our own members demonstrating their methods for English Paper Piecing. 12 Floral Improv with Ellen Lindner Tuesday, November 6, 2018, 9:00-4:00 Manatee Humane Society Clinic th Street W., Bradenton Visit Ellen s website, Want to enhance your artistic skill while making a quick project? This class will accomplish both. First, you ll learn how to make a variety of flowers with no patterns. Then, you ll learn how to create a dynamic composition. With Ellen s pointers on design you ll be guaranteed to make a masterpiece. Finally, you ll learn a quick technique for facing and finishing your quilt with NO hand sewing! Floral Improv Supply List We ll cover a lot of ground in this class. Please read the supply list carefully and complete the class preparations so your class time will be efficient. Your class project will measure about 11 x 14 and can be either vertical or horizontal. Background fabric, 13 x 16 Backing fabric, 13 x 16 Batting, 13 x 16 One strip of fusible web, 12 x 1 ½ (plus fusible web as needed for flowers, stems, and leaves) Black thread, plus threads to match background, flowers, and flower centers General sewing supplies to include: heat resistant straight pins, pencil, pen/marker, rotary cutting tools (small okay), and temporary fabric marking pencils/pens for both light and dark fabrics Silicone/Teflon pressing sheet or parchment paper Glue stick or other fabric glue NOTE: All flower, stem, and leaf fabrics should have FUSIBLE WEB ATTACHED to the back before class.* Poppy fabrics: at least ten coordinating pieces, each about 4 square. Fabrics can be repeated. Daisy fabrics: at least five coordinating pieces, each about 4 square. Fabrics can be repeated. One stem and one leaf fabric, about 8 x 10 for each.** Several scraps of fabrics that might work for flower centers. Include some very darks, and complementary/opposite colors of the flowers and background colors. Sewing machine and presser foot suitable for free motion stitching. Students must be familiar with free motion stitching and with their sewing machines. *Popular fusible web brands are Misty Fuse, Wonder Under, and Steam-A-Seam2. Read the package instructions for fusing details. ** Good stem and leaf fabric choices are lighter or darker versions of the background color. (Not necessarily green!) Class prep: Ensure all flower, leaf, and stem fabrics have fusible web on the back. If your fusible web has a paper component, Leave it in place. Layer batting and background fabric and quilt them in your desired pattern. (Leave the backing fabric off. Your machine won t mind.) Suggested quilting pattern: straight lines that turn at random right angles across the piece. Suggested quilting thread color: Something that provides contrast. Maybe one of your flower colors. These are suggestions. Pick the quilting pattern and thread that you like! 12

13 Dog-bed Scraps Janice Dentler has had a request from the Humane Society that we not include scraps of foam in the dog beds apparently dogs like to chew on it and it can be harmful if they ingest it. So please don t include it in the scraps that you turn in for stuffing the beds, and don t include old clothing. Thanks! Lots of Workshops Coming Up! We re deep into planning exciting workshops for 2019 which will be rolled out later this year. Information about this year s workshops is available at meetings, in our newsletter, and on the website. Workshops this fall include a mystery-quilt project with Jerry Stube in October which will help you use up some of your stash (something we all can use!) with a brand-new pattern created just for us, and a floral improv class with Ellen Lindner in November in which you can create a small wallhanging that will be finished quickly and ready to display or give as a holiday gift almost instant gratification! We try to schedule appealing workshops that engage and teach, and hope you will do your part by signing up and letting us know what kinds of classes you want to take!
