1 December 2017 President s Corner The Holiday Season is upon us. Holiday decorations up, the stores are advertising their sales, and shoppers are out in full force. And by the time you read this newsletter, you will have already had Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends. And you will have thought of all the things in your life for which you are thankful. One of the main things that I am thankful for is my newfound passion QUILTING. I love the beautiful materials and pattern designs, the process of creating a quilt, the pleasure in giving a quilt to family, friends or charity, learning new skills, and sharing quilts, ideas, and new skills with quilt-guild members. So, a big THANK YOU to all of you for sharing your passion and dedication to quilting! Alison Parks December 4 Holiday Party Our December meeting will be our Christmas and Holiday celebration and social. We will first have a short business meeting and quilt-show update. There will be no charge for our party, and the guild will provide snacks, both healthy and maybe not-so-healthy! There will be door prize drawings, and we ll have an optional ornament exchange purchased or homemade, but no more than $10. We will have our regular show and tell, but in keeping with the holiday season, we will have an additional show and tell of your favorite Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or New Year quilts. Be sure to join us for a chance to socialize and get to know newer members! And bring your show and tell and nonperishable food items for the Salvation Army. January Library Display Thanks to Sandi Routhier for taking charge of coordinating our January display of quilts at the 26th Street library branch. Coming right before our quilt show, this will provide good publicity both for the show and our guild. Look through your quilts that won t be in the show for small and medium-size quilts for the display case, along with quilt-related items to enhance the display. Let Sandi know that you will participate by or at the December meeting, then just show up right after New Year s with your quilts. You ll need to pick everything up at the end of January. sandirouthier@yahoo.com We meet on the first Monday of each month at the Salvation Army, th Street E, just off SR70 west of 301 in Bradenton, FL. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. A $3 donation is appreciated from non-members visiting Guild meetings when we have outside speakers.

2 Minutes of the November 6 Guild Meeting Alison Parks, President, opened the meeting. Minutes were posted in the newsletter. A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes as posted. The Christmas party will be December 4 th with doors opening at 6:30. The guild will provide light snacks. Members may participate in an ornament exchange. Please limit the cost to $10. Please consider sharing your Christmas quilts with us. There will also be door prizes! It is time for elections. The names and positions that are up for reelection have been posted in the newsletter. We have a new treasurer, Andrea Powell. Alison Parks, President and Carol Lipp, membership, have agreed to continue in their positions. Sheila Walker moved that we accept these names for the positions named. A member seconded the motion and the vote was unanimous. We are still in need of a new Vice President. We also need a volunteer to coordinate the display at the library. This person needs to contact the librarian and get volunteers who are shorter and agile to help put the display together. They will then return to take it down. This will be for the month of January. Quilts put in the display CANNOT be quilts submitted for the quilt show since the dates overlap. Jane Ellis has been working on our budget. We have a two-year budget. According to the bylaws, we are required to post the budget for 30 days and then we will vote to accept or deny. We are going to publish a 4-month budget since our year is not by the calendar year. We will post the two-year budget in April for voting. It will take effect on May 1, Carol Lipp and Mary Lewis will give a report on the quilt show. There are flyers on the back table. Please take only the ones you are able to distribute. We still need a chairperson for the committee that will take down the quilts. Members or groups that are putting together a basket for the show are asked to contact Alison so she knows the number and type of baskets to expect. Quilt show committee chair meeting will be next Monday, November 13, at 6:30. Janice Dentler and Rose Ryan gave the report on Community Service. There were only three people at the last gathering for dog and cat sewing. There were 54 cat mats which added to the ones members helped sew for a total of 72 and 36 dog beds. A lot of finished quilts were turned in today. We have been getting lots of donations of fabric and notions. One person has requested to have some of her hand quilted pieces finished and returned to her. If anyone is interested in helping her finish these quilts, please contact Janice or Rose. The committee wanted to thank everyone for the donations of things for the totes to go to the Salvation Army for women without children. Membership 119, 69 present, 2 guests, 3 brand new members. Community Service The Community Service committee wants to thank all the members who have spent many hours helping the Guild fulfill one of our mission statements: The Guild shall participate in charitable activities for the community at large through contributions of quilted items and other means. We meet to make dog and cat mats the Tuesday after the guild meeting at the Humane Society on 14th Street W. at 10 am. We meet to work on quilts on the third Friday of the month at the Salvation Army at 10 am. Please come join us for quilting and fun while making a difference for our community. Among the many things done, we have made quilts and totes, collected items, made dog beds and cat mats. We support organizations like the Salvation Army, Guardians ad litem, Humane Society, and Hope Family Services. By December we hope to have hygiene items for homeless women, nonperishable food for the Salvation Army, and enough quilts for all the children at the Hope Shelter. Don t forget to bring those items to the December meeting. The group working on dog beds and cat mats at the Humane Society have a favor to ask. It would help make their job so much easier. Please help us by donating only the following items: Washable fabric of any fiber content and batting scraps. Fabric does not have to be cut. The dog beds get wet and washed often. Please do not give us anything with staples or clips, like bras, denim, drapes, or elastic. They do not work well in the dog beds. We do not want the dog beds to be too heavy or have any sharps that may hurt the dogs. Again, the committee thanks you for all you do. For the number of members we have, we do an amazing job! If you have any questions, contact Janice Dentler at jdentler@tampabay.rr.com or Rose Ryan at roseryan2001@hotmail.com. 6

10 Our 2018 quilt show will be held at the Bradenton Area Convention Center on Friday and Saturday, February 2 & 3, with setup day on Thursday, February 1. We will need the help of every member to have a successful show, and lots of beautiful quilts! So consider what you will do to make this the best show ever. Keep in mind that this is Manatee Patchworkers only major fundraiser and only every two years! You can pick up your tickets for our beautiful opportunity quilt at a guild meeting, or contact Susan Fickey at suzy1434@aol.com for your tickets to our fabulous quilt! We will be putting out signup sheets for volunteer time slots at the quilt show at the guild meetings until the show. We need the help of every member for a successful show, so peruse the signup sheets and decide what suits your abilities and available time. Most of the shifts will be for two hours. Plan a full day (or two!) at the quilt show around volunteer stints, shopping, and viewing the quilts. And we still need a few committee chairs, so consider that! See the opposite page for committees still needing chairs. We welcome your suggestions for more businesses that we can contact who might be interested in vending at our show. Let Carol Lipp know at carollipp@gmail.com. See the current vendor list at right, but it would be nice to have more! Start Your Shopping List! Show vendors are listed below: Bernina Sewing Center Clermont Sewing & Quilting Granny Sue Quilts Harbor Sales, Inc. Magnificent Quilting Company Martelli Enterprises Nana s Quilt Shop Quilters Haven & More Redfern Enterprises (Eurosteam Iron) Sew Easy to Quilt Stone Row Studio The Quilting Squares Quilt Shop Tops Vacuum & Sewing, Inc. Fabric Smart Vendor Tenders Needed! How would you like to be a vendor tender at the quilt show? You can help vendors by bringing coffee or water or lunch or performing other tasks which allow them to stay with their booths and make the most of their time. Jann Warfield has volunteered for Friday, but we still need more help for both days! If this sounds like the job for you, you can get in touch with Carol Lipp at carollipp@gmail.com and let her know. We also need someone to help with continuing contacts with our vendors an important job you can do from home! Contact Carol for info. Attention Longarmers! If you are a Manatee Patchworkers member with a l ongarm business, we would like to have a special table set up for you to promote your business at our 2018 quilt show. You would share the table with other member longarmers and be able to hand out business cards and other advertising and show small examples of your work, and all for $25! Contact Carol Lipp for more information if there is enough interest we d love to promote your business! 10

11 SUPPORT THE SILENT AUCTION! Nancy Luse and Irene Bowersock would like to remind members that there is still time to make a wonderful small quilt for the silent auction. This is a major fundraiser at the show, and donations have been coming in slowly. Take a look through your unfinished projects, plan something eyecatching, or find something you can bear to part with to donate! There are no restrictions on size, but it s nice to be able to display lots of smaller items to encourage plenty of bids. What about a set of blocks, a purse or tote, or something gifty you ve made in a workshop? Bring your donation to our December or January meetings, or contact Irene or Nancy at ibowersock@tampabay.rr.com or nhluse@verizon.net. Consignments Randy Carman and Robin Adorna will be manning our consignment booth at the show and hope to have lots of things for sale. The consignment form is available on our website on the 2018 quilt-show page, and the guild only gets 10%, so this is an opportunity to get plenty of exposure for items you d like to sell! We re looking forward to lots of beautiful quilts in our show. Are you working on yours? Entry forms are available at guild meetings, or download as many as you need from our website, We encourage early entries, and entries must be in by the end of December! We Still Need Batiks! The batik basket is always the most popular offering in the Basket Promenade at the show. If each member brings two batik fat quarters for that basket, it will be Irresistible! So bring your batik donations to a guild meeting and leave with Carol Lipp or Alison Parks and we ll have an overflowing basket! Basket Promenade We need donations for our Basket Promenade! Quiltrelated items are great, but there are lots of other possibilities wine, chocolate, specialty food items, baby, gift certificates for restaurants or other businesses, crafts of many kinds, fabric collections for quilters, etc., etc. Use your imagination! Contact Alison Parks for information or to give her your ideas or offer your help. Your Tickets Are Ready! Pick up your opportunity-quilt tickets from Susan Fickey at guild meetings. We re asking that each member buy or sell twenty tickets to help us succeed with our major fundraising event, our everyother-year quilt show! 11
