1 March 2018 President s Corner The Manatee Patchworkers 2018 quilt show is over and what a GREAT show it was. We received many compliments about the quality of the quilts, the assortment of vendors, the opportunity quilt, and much much more. So, I want to thank each of you for all your donations, volunteer hours, feedback, and support. Now we look forward to our 2020 quilt show. The Chairperson Team has provided feedback to Carol Lipp and Mary Lewis so that we can improve on some of our processes. And Carol plans on documenting the processes so that we have a great set of instructions. Also, we will need volunteers for managing the quilt show and for chairpersons. So, be thinking about not only what you want to make for the 2020 show, but how you want to get involved. As for me, I am going to once again be the Gift Basket Chairperson. March 5 Meeting Our March 5 program will feature Bonnie Langenfeld s The Art of Realistic Fabric Art plus a trunk show. Bonnie will also have a workshop on March 10 on creating a Florida landscape, with a pattern designed just for us. As always, bring your Show and Tell, communityservice projects and dog-bed scraps, and your membership form and check if you still need to renew. And check out our upcoming classes! Thank you again, Alison Parks If you know of a guild member who needs some sunshine or special recognition, please let Cindy Cook know so she can send a card. ccook618@hotmail.com We meet on the first Monday of each month at the Salvation Army, th Street E, just off SR70 west of 301 in Bradenton, FL. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. A $3 donation is appreciated from non-members visiting Guild meetings when we have outside speakers.
2 Minutes of the February 5 Guild Meeting Florida Quilt Events President Alison Parks opened the meeting at 7:00 with the pledge of allegiance and a reminder to turn off cell phones. Posey made a motion to accept the minutes as printed. The motion was seconded and approved. Alison and Ruth Baggs reported on the upcoming programs. Ruth shared some samples of the presenter s work. We are still in need of someone to replace Ruth, as she is stepping down. Would you like the opportunity to attend a workshop for free? Consider serving as a Workshop Host. This person would greet the instructor at our monthly workshops as well assuring that the room is set up and taken down. Each workshop host (one per event) will have their fee waived. Carol Lipp presented the report on Membership. It is time to renew your membership! There were 66 members present and seven new members joined. We had 16 guests join us for our February meeting. Our Community Service committee had a busy January. They made and donated 63 dog beds (a record month!), and 48 cat mats. Sheila displayed the quilt made by volunteers at the Community Service booth during the quilt show. Our quilt show was a great success. Carol and Mary thanked everyone for their participation. Committee chairs were recognized as well as all the many members that volunteered their time to the show. There will be a meeting for the committee chairmen next week to review the show, discuss procedures and any areas that need improvement. Carol and Mary shared that we must all follow the protocols set, especially considering the safety and security of the quilts. While every quilt was returned to its owner in perfect condition, we discovered some areas where we need to tighten our procedures. Members were asked to complete comment cards to share their thoughts on the show. What should we continue doing and what should we consider changing? 5 We need a cottage-group coordinator. Contact any board member for information or to volunteer! Cottage groups mean fellowship, friendship, and accomplishment! We would like to encourage our snowbird members to form a cottage group which will meet during the fall and winter months, so contact Alison Parks if you d like to be a part of that group! Your cottage group should be mostly members but can include others think of it as a recruiting tool! Cyclone Sewers All are welcome. The Cyclone Sewers are meeting at Lakeside South clubhouse off of 37th St. W. in Bradenton on the second and fourth Fridays at 10:00 am. Please contact Rose Ryan, , for more information. Frame Quilting/Short, Mid and Longarm, contact roseryan2001@hotmail.com In Stitches Teaching and learning all the time. Please join us. Posy Havens is the one to call for information at North of Parrish Contact Nan Fishpaw for information at seweasy2quilt@gmail.com. Quilters Gatherings Braden River Library 1-5 p.m. most second Tuesdays. Night Cottage Group meets at the Salvation Army on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month from 4:00-9:00. Contact Sue Baker (momfox229@aol.com) or Janice Dentler (jdentler@tampabay.rr.com) for more information. We meet to make dog beds and cat mats the Tuesday after guild meetings at the Humane Society on 14th Street W. at 10 am. We meet to work on quilts on the third Friday of the month at the Salvation Army at 10 am. Please come join us for quilting and fun while making a difference for our community. We support organizations like the Salvation Army, Guardians ad litem, Humane Society, and Hope Family Services. Last month, the group made 63 dog beds and 48 cat mats. These are donated to the Manatee Humane Society and Bishop Animal Shelter. The group working on dog beds and cat mats at the Humane Society asks that you donate only washable fabric of any fiber content and batting scraps. Fabric does not have to be cut. The dog beds get wet and washed often. Please do not give us anything with staples, hooks, or clips, like bras, denim, drapes, or elastic. They do not work well in the dog beds. We do not want the dog beds to be too heavy or have any sharps that may hurt the dogs. Again, the committee thanks you for all you do. For the number of members we have, we do an amazing job! If you have any questions, contact Janice Dentler at jdentler@tampabay.rr.com or Rose Ryan at roseryan2001@hotmail.com. Upcoming dates are March 6 and 16, April 3 and 21, May 8 and 18, and June 5 and 15. Mark your calendar! Help Wanted! Our photographer, Carole Malone, has been taking our Show and Tell photos for a while and would like to pass the job on to someone else. All that s needed is that you sit in the front row at meetings, take photos of all the great quilts, and send them to Mary Lewis. Talk to Carole or her at carolemalon@mac.com! SAVE THE DATE! Our annual retreat is scheduled for September 13-16, 2018 at Christian Retreat Center. Mark your calendar details coming soon. You can contact Janice Dentler at jdentler@tampabay.rr.com with questions. It s that time again! It s time to renew your membership fill out the form on the next page and bring it with your check to the next meeting, or mail to our PO Box. Anyone not renewing by the end of February will be removed from our membership list. 5
