1 January 2019 President s Corner With the new year approaching, it is a time to reflect on this past year and think about the possibilities for As it relates to quilting, 2018 has been quite a productive year for me. I have made 3 table runners, 1 handbag, 8 lap quilts, and 1 queen size quilt with matching pillow cases. (Yes I do keep a list of the projects I have completed!) I also learned paper piecing which I love and have made several pieces, and I sold at a holiday art exhibit. So, what is in store for 2019? More paper piecing for sure! And I want to try my hand at miniature quilts. Finally, I would like to experiment with some simple embroidery. So, there is definitely a lot to look forward to this next year. I hope all of you are also looking forward to the wonderful and creative projects you will quilt in Happy New Year and Kep on Quilting! Alison If you have not paid your membership dues for 2019, please do so soon. So remember to bring cash or your checkbook. And thank you to the members that have already paid. Board Meetings Board meetings currently are held at 5:15 before monthly guild meetings members are always welcome to attend. Eileen Barchi Kindred Quilting January 7 Meeting Our January 7 program will feature Brenda Grampsas with lots of tips on keeping our quilts pristine with her Rubba Dub Dub, Does Your Quilt Belong in the Tub lecture. She will also be prepared to do appraisals, which we would like to have before the meeting. Her fees are $20 per item for a verbal appraisal or $50 for a written one. If you d like to bring in a quilt for appraisal, Mary Lewis at marylewis11@gmail.com. On Saturday, January 12, Brenda will hold a hand appliqué class at the Humane Society. A lot of interest was expressed in our survey, but not many signups so far so now that Christmas is behind us, sign up for our first class in 2019! Hand appliqué is one of the basic skills for a wellrounded quilter. Also, bring your communityservice projects, dog-bed scraps, show and tell, membership forms and checks, and be prepared to check out our upcoming classes! 10 Dog-bed Scraps Janice Dentler has had a request from the Humane Society that we not include scraps of foam in the dog beds apparently dogs like to chew on it and it can be harmful if they ingest it. So please don t include it in the scraps that you turn in for stuffing the beds, and don t include old clothing. Thanks! Please recycle your used ink cartridges with June Cannon at meetings. If you purchase from Staples and would like to donate your Staples Rewards to the guild, we d love to have you use our number so we receive those Rewards. It helps your guild with VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY! We would love to have one or two volunteers willing to greet people as they enter for meetings and direct them to where they need to go. You can be a friendly face for newcomers and help make everything move smoothly! Contact Alison Parks at aparks24@aol.com if this sounds like a good fit for you! Library Page Check out the Library page on our website. There is a link there to a library list, and you can our librarian, Ruthann McIntyre, and request a book that you can pick up at the next meeting we have lots of books, and Ruthann can t put them all out for meetings, so take a look at the list, which will be updated regularly. More changes will be on the way later! 10
11 Suncoast Quilt Expo February 14 & 15, 2020 Bradenton Area Convention Center 1 Haben Boulevard, Palmetto, Florida Manatee Patchworker members are the absolute best! Five of you have recently stepped up to chair areas of our upcoming quilt show, and Susan Fickey has volunteered to be Co-chair! Opportunity Quilt Ticket Sales: Posey Havens, Chair Basket Promenade: Sue Baker, Chair Silent Auction: Irene Bowersock and Nancy Luse, returning Chairs Hostesses: Darlene Schwartz, returning Chair Adding Randy Carman to the mix as the Opportunity Quilt Chair (If you were at the August meeting, you saw the quilt, ready for quilting bids...beautiful! Can t wait to see it finished.) gives us a really good start on our Show Team. Thank you, thank you, thank you! And drumroll, please the name is Suncoast Sunset! With the date set (see top of page!), there are a few chairs needed right away. Vendor Chair: Save the Date info to go out within the month; floor layout and full agreement by November. Coordinate the mailing of vendor applications for space and follow-up with each. Easiest to begin with those who vended at our show in 2018 they were all happy so will probably want to be with us again. Collect deposits and final payments from each vendor. Follow up with Vendors for set up needs at the Show. Internet Publicity: Start now researching and posting our date and show information. Search the internet for sites where free listings for our Show can be added. The earlier our dates are published, the less overlap we will have with other quilt shows. Advertising: Research for future ad placement and deadlines needs to start soon. Research advertising costs, ad sizes and deadlines for local, regional and national options. Decide best options with Quilt Show Chair to stay within budget and place ads. All other Chair positions will need planning time, so the sooner your name is beside the area you would like to chair, the better! Here s a list of those yet to be filled. Please review last month s quilt-show page for a thumbnail sketch of duties. Chairs Needed by December: Quilt Travel Volunteer Admissions Quilt Take Down Photography Consignment Sales Judging Quilt Hanging Quilt Distribution Chairs for Community Service, Banker, and Membership are positions to be held by current board members. Each will be seeking additional show assistance. If you have questions, please feel free to call me. Carol Lipp, or carollipp@gmail.com 11
