1 October President s Corner Can you believe it! Fall is almost here, even though it still remains hot in sunny Florida. And with Fall comes the holiday season. If you visit the local fabric stores or the fabric sites online, they are displaying their autumn and holiday fabrics. This year I plan to make a Christmas lap quilt to throw over my living room rocking chair. What is it that you plan to make for the holiday season? On another note As you know, September has brought hurricanes that have caused devastation to the islands in the Caribbean as well as wind and flood damage to Florida. I hope that all of you have remained safe during Hurricane Irma and that your lives are now getting back to normal. And, of course, you are once again quilting. Alison Parks Eileen Barchi October 2 Guild Meeting Our October speaker will be Brenda Grampsas, who will tell us about Doll Quilts Tiny Treasures and will bring a trunk show to share with us. Don t forget to check out upcoming workshops to sign up for, think about your quiltshow entries and volunteer signups, your completed PHD tops and show and tell, pet-bed scraps, and community-service projects. And check out our library list on the website you can Ruthann with your request, and it will be waiting for you at the meeting. Quilt-Show Timeline December 30 January 27 Quilt-show entry forms due Quilts delivered to Salvation Army, judging to take place the following week February 1 February 2-3 February 3 Quilt-show setup & quilts hung Quilt show! Quilt takedown at 4:00 p.m. for pickup 5:00-6:00 p.m. We meet on the first Monday of each month at the Salvation Army, th Street E, just off SR70 west of 301 in Bradenton, FL. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. A $3 donation is appreciated from non-members visiting Guild meetings when we have outside speakers.
2 Minutes of the September 4 Guild Meeting Florida Quilt Events 2017 Alison Parks called the meeting to order. The minutes from the last meeting were accepted as published. Alison welcomed our visitors and explained the format of our meeting. We are in need of a volunteer to coordinate the Christmas Party. If anyone is interested, please contact Alison Parks. We also have an opening for someone to fill the nominations committee. This person helps search for members that are willing to serve on the ballot for open board positions. If you are interested, please contact a board member. April 28-October 31 Exhibit, Trenton Sixteen Decades of Quilts 35+ quilts from 19th-20th centuries Visit Facebook, Florida Quilt Museum October 6-7 Quilt Show in Crystal River Oct Quilt Show & Sale in White Springs Vice-President Ruth Baggs reported on the upcoming programs. This month, our group enjoyed the beautiful quilts created by our own member Pat Pfeifle. Next month, the program will feature Brenda Grampsas. Members are encouraged to check our calendar for the remainder of the scheduled programs through May January Quilt Show in Orlando World Quilt Florida by Mancuso Carol Lipp gave an update on the February 2-3 Quilt Show. The set up will be February 1. The drop-off date for quilts will be Saturday, January 27 at the Salvation Army. The judging will be that week. Members submitting quilts for judging need to refer to the application form to know in which category your quilt should be entered. Be sure your quilt is being entered under the correct category! We need those forms early because we need to map out the quilt layout so that we can order the pipes and drapes. We need the best-guess size estimate and size direction on the form so set up is easier. We currently have about 12 vendors who have reserved 20 booths. This is our major fundraiser. Think of this as you put things in the show or donate for the basket walk January Quilters Marketplace in The Villages, January Quilt Show in Lakeland February 2-3 Quilt Show in Palmetto carollipp@gmail.com February Quilt Show in Punta Gorda February Quilt Show in Naples NaplesQuiltersGuildInc@gmail.com February 29-March 3 AQS Quilt Show, Daytona Janice Dentler gave a report for Community Service. During the dog bed workshop, the group made 59 dog beds and 59 cat mats. There are some cat mat kits available for members to help make some because they go through them so quickly. Our volunteers have donated 76 quilts to Guardian Ad Litem Program, which benefits the children of Manatee County receiving care in the Foster care system. We would like to do more by Christmas. If we all participate, imagine how many children we help! March 1-2 Quilt Show in Ocala Belleview Busy Bees For more events check out the FQN newsletter at We are giving the Salvation Army tote bags with toiletries for the homeless women without children because they do not receive items from other donations. Members are asked to bring small items that a woman could use. (i.e.: small shampoo, lotions, soap, comb, chapstick, etc.) Respectfully Submitted by Susan Fickey Board Meetings The postponed September board meeting will be held at 5:00, prior to the October 2 guild meeting members are always welcome to attend. 2

You can be a friendly face for newcomers and help make everything move smoothly! Contact Alison Parks at aparks24@aol.com if this sounds like a good fit for you! The batik basket is always the most popular offering in the Basket Promenade at the show. If each member brings two batik fat quarters for that basket, it will be Irresistible! So bring your batik donations to a guild meeting and leave with Carol Lipp or Alison Parks and we ll have an overflowing basket! Community Service October community-service workshops will be on October 3 at 10:30 at the Humane Society for pet beds and on October 20 at 10:00 at the Salvation Army. Members are welcome and encouraged to attend! As a reminder, the recipients selected this year for our donated quilts are Hope Family Services and the Guardian Ad Litem program in Manatee County. On August 24, 76 quilts were delivered to the Guardian Ad Litem program by Rose Ryan, Janice Dentler, and Sheila Walker. We would love to have more to donate to this program by Christmas, so come to this month s workshop or make something at home! Attendees at the pet-bed workshop donated 59 dog beds and 59 cat mats, and more are always needed, since they go home with adopted animals. 10 Our 2018 quilt show will be held at the Bradenton Area Convention Center on Friday and Saturday, February 2 & 3, with setup day on Thursday, February 1. We will need the help of every member to have a successful show, and lots of beautiful quilts! So consider what you will do to make this the best show ever. Keep in mind that this is Manatee Patchworkers only major fundraiser and only every two years! We re looking forward to lots of beautiful quilts in our show. Are you working on yours? Entry forms are available at guild meetings, or download as many as you need from our website, You can pick up your tickets for our beautiful opportunity quilt at a guild meeting, or contact Susan Fickey at suzy1434@aol.com for your tickets to our fabulous quilt! Vendor Tenders Needed! How would you like to be a vendor tender at the quilt show? You can help vendors by bringing coffee or water or lunch or performing other tasks which allow them to stay with their booths and make the most of their time. Jann Warfield has volunteered for Friday, but we still need more help for both days! If this sounds like the job for you, you can get in touch with Carol Lipp at carollipp@gmail.com and let her know. We also need someone to help with continuing contacts with our vendors an important job you can do from home! Contact Carol for info. We will be putting out signup sheets for volunteer time slots at the quilt show at the guild meetings until the show. We need the help of every member for a successful show, so peruse the signup sheets and decide what suits your abilities and available time. Most of the shifts will be for two hours. Plan a full day (or two!) at the quilt show around volunteer stints, shopping, and viewing the quilts. And we still need a few committee chairs, so consider that! See the opposite page for committees still needing chairs. Vendor packets have gone out, but we welcome your suggestions for more businesses to contact. Let Carol Lipp know at carollipp@gmail.com. So far twenty spaces have been reserved by twelve vendors, but it would be nice to have more! Plan to make a small quilt for our quilt-show challenge, Suncoast Sights. Anything you might see along the Suncoast can be inspiration for a small quilt with no more than a 96 perimeter. That s only 24 on a side very doable! We plan to schedule a committee meeting soon there s a lot to be done, and we re looking forward to hearing your ideas and suggestions as the show gets closer! 10
11 WE NEED YOUR HELP! Quilt Takedown: Chair:. This team will take down the quilts and hald them to runners who will organize them by last name in preparation for returning to the owners. We ll need ladder-climbing volunteers for this hour. Media Advertising: Chair:. We ll need to contact newspapers and other regional outlets to advertise our show. Advertising is crucial to building our attendance, and this team will need to be aware of deadlines to get the word out! Signage: Chair:. A variety of signs will be necessary from the entry throughout the show to inform and direct visitors. This team will Inventory signs from past shows and add new signs as necessary and place them. The following committees have chairs but will need your help: Hostesses, Darlene Schwartz (darcar58@hotmail.com); Volunteer Checkin, Carole Malone (carolemalon@mac.com); Admissions, Darlene Schwartz (darcar58@hotmail.com); Membership, Carol Lipp (carollipp@gmail.com) & Sue Baker (momfox229@aol.com); Consignment, Randy Carman (randyc10@aol.com) & Robin Adorna (adornr@aol.com); Basket Promenade, Alison Parks (aparks24@aol.com); Opportunity Quilt Ticket Sales, Susan Fickey (suzy1434@aol.com); Quilt Hanging, Debbie VanBerkel (vbgparents@verizon.net); Quilt Return, Eileen Barchi (Eileen@kindredquilting.com); Silent Auction, Irene Bowersock (ibowersock@tampabay.rr.com) & Nancy Luse (nhluse@verizon.net). 11
