CYPRESS CREEK QUILTERS GUILD TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 2, 2014 SOCIAL 6 PM MEETING 6:30 September Lutz First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall US North 41 Lutz, FL P.O. Box 446 Land O Lakes, FL Box 446 Land September President s Message September President s Message It is hard to believe there are only three months left before the end of the year. Although I was in a store the other day and the Christmas decorations were out and Christmas trees were up. A little early for me as school has just started and Halloween isn t even here yet. I know many of you have already finished your handmade Christmas presents (I am not one of you). It is difficult for me to think of Christmas when it is still extremely hot and humid, there is still lots of baseball to watch and football season is right around the corner. One day and one holiday at a time for me. Our friends from up north will soon be back to enjoy our milder winter weather. Welcome back to our snowbird members. It is also that time of year to volunteer or nominate someone for the executive board of the guild. At the upcoming meeting I will be asking 2 members to assist me on the nominating committee. Nominees are needed for President, Vice- President, Member-at-large and Parliamentarian. Margaret Stephenson has agreed to continue in the treasurer position for another year. Think about what you can do to help move the guild forward in The education committee has been busy arranging 3 education programs for the remainder of the year. Details are included in the newsletter. Happy Birthday to all those who will be celebrating birthdays in September. Also my deepest condolences to Jeannie Allen in the loss of her mother. Keep Sewing Debbie FAT QUARTERS FOR SEPTEMBER The Fat Quarter for September will be Batiks any shade. This is a good time to get a variety of Batiks. Bring any approximately 18" x 21" cotton fabric. There will be a drawing that night and you could be a lucky winner to receive 4 fat quarters or one set could be less if there is an odd amount turned in. The Fat Quarter for October will be Halloween or Autumn fabric. Great for a table runner. Alma Coston
September QUILT SHOP CORNER Quilt Shop Corner is the new name for our ways and means table! We will continue to have this area available during social time prior to each Quilt Guild meeting. We are selling items at a very low price, so please do check it out. Please continue to bring us any quilt related item that we can then sell. Some items that I have thought of are listed below. gently read Quilt Magazines Quilt books, P.I.G.S (projects in grocery sacks) that you know longer want to start unfinished projects sewing notions that you may have duplicate or no longer use sewing storage baskets, boxes, tins, etc. fabric, clearly marked with the yardage cash so you can make purchases! In the future we plan to add raffles of donated quilts, baskets, etc/ to the Quilt Shop Corner. So be thinking of what you could make, complete and/or just bring to us to raffle off. Thanks to all the members for supporting this venture!
September UFO s September Challenge It s Simple! What ever your favorite color is finish a UFO with that color. This will win you an extra chance for the end of year drawing. Keep smiling, Lyn Shipman UFO Chairman
September Ice Dye Workshop Linda Dawson will teach an intensive, hands-on Ice Dye Workshop for our guild on Nov. 1, Ice Dye uses the same permanent dyes - but differs from immersion or baggie methods in the way dye is applied. Based on more than 15 years of experience, Linda s class includes instruction & assistance in using Procion dyes, PFD fabrics & Shibori techniques as well as her ice dye methods. Linda has studied with & holds professional relationships with nationally recognized instructors, including Jane Dunnewold, Kerr Grabowski and Susan Brubaker Knapp. She dyes & prints fabrics for art installations & has shown work in galleries (some will be shown at the workshop). Fees: Facility $5. Supplies: $30 (includes all supplies needed to dye & take home 1.5 yards of permanently dyed fabric. TOTAL: $35. check payable to CCQG. Fees must be paid before the end of the meeting on Oct. 7. Attendance is limited. Attendees: Bring own Beverages & Lunch [Class begins promptly at 10:00 am; ends by 2pm.] Wear old clothes/shoes. You will also be asked to wear gloves & a mask (provided). Bring a couple of plastic garbage bags (protection while transporting wet fabrics). Your wet, dyed fabric will need to batch overnight & be washed at home the next day. NOTE: You may not want to attend if you have respiratory issues or are not able stand on your feet for a couple hours. Dyes used in the class are powder and can be hazardous, especially to the respiratory system if inhaled. The workshop will be held outdoors at the Pavilion behind the Land O Lakes Recreation Complex, 3032 Collier Parkway, on Nov. 1, 10:00 am-2:00 pm. (To get to the Pavilion, drive past front of the Rec Center, and past/behind all of the athletic facilities). Questions on the above: call Janice Kreuzinger , cell:
September Charity Sew Day Our monthly Charity Sew Day was August 16th, which happened to be a very busy day for surrounding quilt shops! But we managed to squeak out eight happy quilters! We sewed and quilted for many hours and we now have a total of 59 completely finished quilts of various sizes for our 2014 charity, The Spring of Tampa Bay. The reason we are up that high is that Sue StPierre donated 20 baby quilts! I would like to thank her for her exceptional good will toward this cause! Below is a picture of some of her donations. I would also like to thank Linda Fentriss, Lyn and Gil Shipman, Wendy Mastilak, Karen Waechter, Bonnie Doyne, Sue St.Pierre and Judy Hare for taking the time out of their day to join me at the church! I want to also thank all of you who are trying to finish your charity quilt at home, please try very hard to get them all in at the September guild meeting, it would be so helpful to me. There are many people behind the scenes working very hard embroidering labels, donating material, donating quilts, cutting, sewing and quilting, I THANK YOU ALL!! Remember, we still have cancer pillows and Quilts of Valor. Linda needs approximately 40 more quilts for Quilts of Valor. If you only can get the top done, Linda will take it unfinshed. Again, thank you! -Cindy Castora, 2014 Charity
September MORE MONTHS We are almost half way through our 5 month selling season for this years opportunity quilt. We knew that this was going to be a short selling season, but as a guild we also decided to go forward and make the commitment and get this process going so we can keep our education programs going for our future. Well I am here to say that we have almost three thousand tickets checked out. Yeah - you! We are moving right on schedule and we can get this done. So please turn in your tickets with the monies collected and get your next bundle of twenty five tickets and we will make it to our goal. Don't forget to talk to Tess Scrap & Sew for places to take the quilt to and sell your tickets. She is working very hard to make our job easier to sell these tickets. Once you have a date and time, contact me right a way so we can make arrangements to get you the appropriate tickets to sell. Thanks everyone for all your help and cooperation. I will see you at the September meeting with more tickets and postcards. Teri Hamilton or teresahamilton@verizon.net
September Scrappy Says... Lady says a journey begins with a single step followed by putting one foot in front of the other, but with Quilters it's putting one stitch after another. The pattern is called JOURNEY by Laundry Basket Quilts and since Lady had an over abundance of fat quarters, she decided to try it. The background remains the same throughout the quilt and each block is based on the simple little 9-patch substituting three (3) HST pointing downwards in each block. It doesn't matter what size finished square you make as long as it's repetitious throughout the quilt. While Lady normally likes to work with finished 2 inch squares, this time, she decided to use finished 3 inch squares instead. Any block larger than a 12.5 un-finished using 4.5 inch squares takes away the beauty of the quilt and this pattern makes a great scrappy quilt. Each 9-patch will be separated with a background 9.5 inch square liken to that of the Single Irish Chain pattern. Each block will need inch same color squares, inch background squares and 3 un-finished same color half square triangles (HST). The 9 patch pattern will be indicated with [\] for HST pointing down; C for colored square; and B for background square. However, you want to make your HST is up to the individual and are great if you're making a scrappy quilt since each Thangles sheet makes 4 HST. That "extra" HST; if you make four (4) of the same color blocks, it will be used. If not, throw it into your orphan box of squares. If making same color, Lady suggests you use sheets for multiple HST. ROW 1: [\], C, B ROW 2: B, [\], C ROW 3: C, B, [\] Notice how the HST forms a chain pointing down in every row in the example shown below. The beauty of this quilt pattern; it doesn't need a border and one can quilt it by following the stitch in the ditch tops of the HST and on the diagonal of each background square using the same color thread as the background. This pattern is great for Quilts of Valor, alternating diagonal rows of red, blue, and gold; background will always be white. If you're making a finished 9 inch block; you'll need to add finished 3 inches of background fabric on each side of the quilt and finished 4 inches of background fabric on top and bottom of quilt to equal the 60 X 80 required size. Your QOV should not exceed this size. Love, Scrappy
September Upcoming events.. Mark your calendar for our Ice dye workshop on Nov 1st. Check the following page for a two month calendar. Please let me know of upcoming quilt related events that I can include in our calendar. Education workshop teachers.. Each teacher is paid $50.00 for teaching the class, each participant is charged $5.00. If you have a skill you could share with others i.e. binding..applique. Fabric dying.. Or would like to teach a how to work shop...i.e. attaching a display sleeve to your quilt.. This would be a nice short term commitment you could make that would contribute to the success of our guild. If you are interested in chairing this committee or teaching a class please see a board member. Raffle ticket sales. Volunteers are needed to take the raffle quilt to meetings of other area guilds, Craft fairs, local events, anywhere it can be displayed and people given the opportunity to donate a dollar in exchange for a chance in our drawing. See Tess Pokorny if you are interesting in helping boost our sales. Nomination Committee members for 2015 board and any and all persons interested in contributing to our guild s success in 2015 by serving as a board member Please see a current board member before or after our meeting...or drop a note to Deborah Nestelli.
