1 February 2018 President s Corner Are you excited? Are you ready for an AWESOME Manatee Patchworkers Quilt Show? As you know, the quilt show is this coming weekend and there has been a lot of activity since our January 8 th meeting. We now have approximately 130 quilts in the show, gift baskets, quilts for sale, and 14 vendors. We also have a Facebook Page advertising the quilt show and advertisements in several local papers. And the chairpersons have their lists of volunteers. So, although there is still much to be done this last week, we are positioned for a GREAT quilt show. Also, just to reiterate, this event is our major fund raiser. Along with our membership dues, the quilt show funds our programs and workshops. So, reach out to your friends, family, work acquaintances, and anyone else who you think will enjoy our show. Finally, in advance, I want to thank each of you who has donated or will donate your time and/or items to this event. SEE YOU AT THE QUILT SHOW! Alison Parks February 5 Meeting Our February program will feature Gudrun Erla, quilter, pattern and fabric designer and prolific author, who will relate her quilting journey and present a trunk show. Born and raised in Iceland, Ms. Erla now lives in Minnesota. Visit her website, for more about our speaker! We ll also hear a very preliminary quilt-show report. Bring your pet-bed scraps, community-service projects, and Show and Tell. And if you haven t renewed your membership yet, bring your form and check. And don t forget to look over our upcoming workshops we have interesting offerings in March and April with Bonnie Langenfeld and Maggie Dillon. Check out the workshop info in this newsletter! Eileen Barchi Board Meetings Board meetings currently are held at 5:00 before monthly guild meetings members are always welcome to attend. We meet on the first Monday of each month at the Salvation Army, th Street E, just off SR70 west of 301 in Bradenton, FL. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. A $3 donation is appreciated from non-members visiting Guild meetings when we have outside speakers.
2 Minutes of the January 8 Guild Meeting Florida Quilt Events Our meeting was called to order by president Alison Parks. The minutes were approved as read. Members were reminded that our Vice President, Ruth Baggs, is stepping down and we need a replacement. The majority of the programs for this year have been planned. We finished 2017 with 127 members. There were 69 members present for the January meeting with one new member and five visitors. It is time to renew our dues for the year Be sure to complete the membership form and get your dues in! The library display was moved to the Central Library on the second floor. Be sure to visit and see our members beautiful quilts. QUILT SHOW!! Our program for this month focused on plans for our quilt show. Carol Lipp and Mary Lewis shared information and answered questions regarding the show. Each committee chair shared the responsibilities and need for volunteers. If you haven t signed up for one of the volunteer slots, please do so! Our show is our one big fundraiser and is only held every other year. It is important for all of us to participate! Do you have ideas for a basket? Our basket promenade is very popular and profitable, but we need baskets! The consignment shop is still in need of items. The guild keeps 10% of the sales, the member keeps the rest. There are forms available and should be filled out ahead of the show. Also, don t forget to get those opportunity ticket stubs/money returned! The quilt is beautiful and you don t want to miss an opportunity to win it! Finally, are you on Facebook? Please take a moment to share our Quilt Show with your friends. 5 We need a cottage-group coordinator. Contact any board member for information or to volunteer! Cottage groups mean fellowship, friendship, and accomplishment! We would like to encourage our snowbird members to form a cottage group which will meet during the fall and winter months, so contact Alison Parks if you d like to be a part of that group! Your cottage group should be mostly members but can include others think of it as a recruiting tool! Cyclone Sewers All are welcome. The Cyclone Sewers are meeting at Lakeside South clubhouse off of 37th St. W. in Bradenton on the second and fourth Fridays at 10:00 am. Please contact Rose Ryan, , for more information. Frame Quilting/Short, Mid and Longarm, contact roseryan2001@hotmail.com In Stitches Teaching and learning all the time. Please join us. Posy Havens is the one to call for information at North of Parrish Contact Nan Fishpaw for information at seweasy2quilt@gmail.com. Quilters Gatherings Braden River Library 1-5 p.m. most second Tuesdays. Night Cottage Group meets at the Salvation Army on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month from 4:00-9:00. Contact Sue Baker (momfox229@aol.com) or Janice Dentler (jdentler@tampabay.rr.com) for more information. We meet to make dog beds and cat mats the Tuesday after guild meetings at the Humane Society on 14th Street W. at 10 am. We meet to work on quilts on the third Friday of the month at the Salvation Army at 10 am. Please come join us for quilting and fun while making a difference for our community. We support organizations like the Salvation Army, Guardians ad litem, Humane Society, and Hope Family Services. Most recently, 25 quilts went to Hope Family Services so all the children in the shelter had quilts for Christmas. Dog beds and cat mats were donated to the Humane Society and to Bishop Animal Shelter. The group working on dog beds and cat mats at the Humane Society asks that you donate only washable fabric of any fiber content and batting scraps. Fabric does not have to be cut. The dog beds get wet and washed often. Please do not give us anything with staples, hooks, or clips, like bras, denim, drapes, or elastic. They do not work well in the dog beds. We do not want the dog beds to be too heavy or have any sharps that may hurt the dogs. Again, the committee thanks you for all you do. For the number of members we have, we do an amazing job! If you have any questions, contact Janice Dentler at jdentler@tampabay.rr.com or Rose Ryan at roseryan2001@hotmail.com. Upcoming dates are February 6 and 16, March 6 and 16, April 3 and 21, May 8 and 18, and June 5 and 15. Mark your calendar! If you know of a guild member who needs some sunshine or special recognition, please let Cindy Cook know so she can send a card. ccook618@hotmail.com SAVE THE DATE! Our annual retreat is scheduled for September 13-16, 2018 at Christian Retreat Center. Mark your calendar details coming soon. You can contact Janice Dentler at jdentler@tampabay.rr.com with questions. Please avoid using scented products on meeting nights to help our members with allergies breathe a little easier! 5 It s that time again! It s time to renew your membership fill out the form on the next page and bring it with your check to the February meeting, or mail to our PO Box.
