1 Women Of the West QUILTERS JULY 2015 JULY PROGRAM Monday, July 27, 6:00 p.m. PROGRAM: Picnic at Parkers Lake President s Column I hope you all enjoyed the meeting last month, as much as I did. Listening to everyone talk about their favorite quilting tool or gadget was not only fun, but educational as well. I learned about all kinds of tools and gadgets that I never knew I needed before! Thank you to everyone who brought their favorite tool or idea to share. It definitely made for a fun and exciting evening! Speaking of excitement, Arnold Schwarzenegger better take cover now that Mickey Ellis and her team of "Transformers" have arrived. I hope you got a chance to get a close-up look at all the beautiful things Mickey and her team of "Transformers" created from your donated UFO's. The talent and ingenuity of the "Transformers" was truly amazing. Thanks to everyone who donated their UFO's throughout the year and to Mickey's team of Transformers. The boutique at the Quilt Show in October is going to be spectacular! Oh... by the way, my fabric dying class was a blast!! If you have never dyed fabric, I definitely encourage you to try it at least once. It was so much fun! During my class, we dyed three separate sets of "color wheel's", each consisting of 12 different colors, which gave us a total of 36 colors. But that was just the beginning. I brought the left over dye from class home and decided to "play" in my garage. You know, a little of this and a little of that! When everything was said and done, I ended up with 48 different colors in all (10 yards of fabric in total.) What FUN! Now I just need to figure out how to dye more fabric at a time and how to use all my new fabric in a quilt. Or... maybe I'll just admire my new fabric for awhile longer!! Address: County Rd 6, Plymouth, MN The park is located at County Road 6 and Niagara Lane, approximately 1/2 mile west of Highway 494. The pavilion is located across from Parkers Lake near the ball fields.you can see it up on the hill by the play area. Parking is limited at the pavilion (8 spots) so you will need to park in the lot below. The climb up the hill will be steep so if you have difficulty with hills you may want to buddy up with someone who can drop you off or we will have people that can do shuttling for you. 2 Women of the West Quilt Show 2015 Minnesota Memories October 3, 2015 Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church 5005 Northwest Blvd, Plymouth, MN Admission $6.00 For more information: Quilt Show Special Exhibits The WOW Quilt show is October 3, One of our displays will be the special exhibit made up of finished items from our Quilt Challenge and classes taken. Please register each of your items by checking the box noted as Special Exhibit/Class Project. Those projects do not count as part of the 3-quilt limit per person. The list of classes include: Table runner challenge Nancy Wick Thread painted sculpted bowls Erica Plank - Cathedral Window class Deb Karasik paper piecing class Karen Stone paper piecing class (2 different patterns) Jane Sassaman class leaf sampler Susan Cleveland class Attic Windows Deadline for quilt and special exhibit registration is September 11 th as posted on the web site. This will give the committee time to compile the information about your quilts, make decisions on hanging, edit and print the descriptions you provide. Even if your quilt is not quite done yet, please register it. What a great way to motivate you to finish that quilt! It s going to be a great show! Task Force To Be Created We need your ideas! Just a reminder, if you are interested in being part of the WOW Task Force, please notify Renelle Kunau or Mickey Ellis. The purpose of the new WOW Task Force will be to focus on the future of Women Of the West.The task force will work closely with the board to review the current operating structure of the guild and will make recommendations to the board to improve and maintain the longevity of the Guild. There will be birthday club at the picnic and we will celebrate with you! As would Prince, Angelina Jolie and Heidi Klum, were they in the neighborhood! Lucky summer birthday people. 3 2015 Year of the UFO The UFOs you donated have been transformed by the WOW Transformers and were displayed at the June meeting. From potholders to complete cut-out quilt kits it will all be for sale at our quilt show boutique. Maybe you will buy your own UFO that was transformed into a repurposed item. We are halfway into 2015 so it s time to check your initial UFO inventory list. Have you finished some of them? Have you added 2 for every 1 you finish? Or have you added more and not finished any? Whatever the circumstance, it is good to check your inventory list every 6 months. By being diligent you actually assess what you have in the queue and make some decisions about the projects. A couple of our members have finished their 5 Works In Process (WIP). They are the proud holders of the colorful flower banner to remind them of their accomplishment. How are you doing on your WIP list? I still have a basket of flowers to give out get busy!! Mickey Ellis, Activity Chair Secret Sisters I'm not much of a gardener and my thumb certainly isn't green, but this year it seems that the flowers are bigger, and the grass is greener than I am used to. Could it be a combination of the right amount of sunshine and rain? I'm really enjoying it anyway. It has me thinking about flowers on table runners and in quilts. (Wish I did appliqué flowers always look so good on those quilts.) Do you have any flower prints to share with you Secret Sister? Or perhaps some greens to add extra green leaves to her quilts. Have you been able to use any of your Secret Sister surprises in any of your projects? I would love to hear about them. Happy Quilting! Diane Salls, Secret Sisters Chair WOW Quilt Guild Meeting Minutes June 22, 2015 Medina Entertainment Center Renelle Kunau opened the meeting by telling a joke and talked about the MQ Quilt Show that was held in Duluth. The WOW Raffle Quilt, Primary Flight, was awarded an honorable mention ribbon, Renelle Kunau was awarded a Blue Ribbon in the Judged Category for Pieced Large 1 Person, and Make It Modern Quilt Group won a 3 rd place ribbon in the Group Quilt category. Dean Davis volunteered to take pictures of Show & Share for our July meeting because Lisa Olson will be gone. Robin Kohls talked about upcoming speakers and programs. For the July meeting, we will be meeting at Parkers Lake. If you need shuttle service from the parking lot up to the shelter, get in touch with Robin Kohls, Renelle Kunau or drive up and someone can jump in and drive your car back down. Brenda Dunlavy reported that we have sold $ worth of raffle tickets. Keep selling your raffle tickets and if you need more, please see Brenda. Remember, proceeds are going to Children s charities. Mickey Ellis reminded us to finish up our workshop projects so that we can display them in the Special Exhibits section of our Quilt Show. Mickey and the UFO Transformer Group got together and went through all the stuff that was donated. They made quite a few things and brought in things for the boutique for our Quilt Show and also for Community Service. She also had some back rest kits for people to take and make them and bring back. Terri Good talked about doing a block drive for Quilts of Valor. She had fabric and instructions for people to make some blocks. (Meeting minutes continued on page 4)

4 (June meeting minutes, continued) Elaine Franks told us the registration form is available on the website to enter our quilts and that the deadline is September 11. Proceeds from the raffle quilt are going to the following: Children s Hospital, Groves Academy and Cakes From Grace. We didn t have a speaker for this month. Instead members were asked to bring a favorite tool or notion to share/ demonstrate. Below are some of the favorite tools/notions that we saw: Robin Kohls brought a special foot to do ruler work for quilting on your domestic machine Renelle Kunau brought an Applique Pressing Sheet (aka The Goddess Sheet) Carole Olson brought Log Cabin Templates by Marti Mitchell Mickey Ellis brought Grip Strips to attach to your rulers to keep your fabric from slipping. They are available at Marcey Fahrenholtz brought in her Add a ¼ and Add an 1/8 rulers that she uses for Paper Piecing Deane Gradous brought in a Bernina Walking Foot Nancy Joens brought in her Lil Twister tool and showed a few projects that she had made with them Sandy Johnson brought in her Bloc-Loc Rulers and talked about them Mary Gunness brought in her Dritz Needle Threader and demonstrated how easy it was to thread some needles for hand sewing Elaine Franks suggested that if you are making Log Cabin strips, use an empty silverware drawer to organize your strips Dawn Thrift talked about the Accu Quilt Go and brought in a tumbler quilt that she had made. Accu Quilt is a machine that cuts several layers of fabrics at once into strips, squares, or they have different die cuts Jean Carlton talked about the importance of taking pictures of everything you make and putting them in an album. She suggested you also take pictures of your quilt top before you take it to the quilter, after you get it back from the quilter, when you are giving it to whomever for a gift, etc. Nussy Merchant talked about using your Smart Phone or ipad to take pictures when you are laying out a quilt Linda Baule brought in her Ergonomic Rotary Cutter and a WonderCut Ruler to make half square triangles Terri Good brought in Thermal Thimbles they are rubber thimbles to use when you are ironing so you don t burn your fingers Cheryl Vessels brought in a seam ripper that had a light and magnifying glass on it Dean Davis talked about folding your quilt on the bias and so you won t get creases. This will help your quilt to hang nicely. Judy Mages brought in a rotating mat and showed how to use it and turn it without picking up your pieces We ended with Show & Share. Mary Gunness showed the quilt she completed after taking Deb Karasak s class as well as the leaf sampler she created in Jane Sassaman s workshop. Mary Havisto showed another in her series of quilts made from plaid shirt fabrics. Nancy Joens created Sew Cute Critters to donate to St. Joseph s Nancy Miller brought 2 twin sized quilts she will be donating The one on the left is called Silly Ladies Dean Davis showed a pink & gray graduation quilt she made for her God-daughter s daughter. Karen Anderson shared her Seven Sisters quilt, as well as a batik wall hanging called Marmalade & Jam. Cheryl Vessels shared an English paper pieced pillow she d pieced by hand

6 WOW 2015 Officers & Committee Chairs The Women of the West Quilt Guild was organized in December of 1997 to encourage and support all levels of quilters. The guild offers education, programs, fellowship, communication and community service while providing a place to be among people that share the same interest of the art of quilting. Meetings are held the 4th Monday monthly at 7 p.m. at the Medina Entertainment Center. If there is a conflict with a holiday, another night will be scheduled.
