1 - Women Of the West QUILTERS October 2013 OCTOBER PROGRAM Monday, October 28th, 7 p.m. DEBBIE BOWLES of Maple Island Quilts will be our speaker. It Doesn t Always Have to Match will be the topic for the evening. We ll be looking at what contrast, color, intensity and fabric choice can do for your design and sharing some tips for great looking multi fabric quilts. President s Column Dear Quilters, I have my calendar filled in to help with the WOW Quilt Show on Friday, October 11 and to volunteer on Saturday, October 12. I m looking forward to it! I hope your calendar is X d out for one or both days as well and that you re planning the drop off and/or pick up of your entered quilts on that day. Given our fabulous fall weather, it should be a record turnout for our show. I have discovered that when one is at a quilt show, one forgets all about the government shutdown and all the other nasty things happening in the world! Quilt shows are wonderful therapy! You may have heard quilting referred to as therapy cheaper than a shrink, better than a drink and others. Well, there is a very good reason for those humorous analogies. Quilting is a top pyramid endeavor. That is Maslow s fourth and fifth levels in his hierarchy of needs. The need for achievement, respect by others & creativity located in the Esteem and Self Actualization stages of existence. It s where our basic needs have been met and we have the luxury of pursuing some of our higher needs. Well Maslow is only part of the quilting story. There s that pesky left brain, right brain thing going on as well. The left-brain is reading and processing the size and number of pieces to be cut, the order in which they will be sewn, while considering the direction of the fabric motif and how the sections will be assembled. These are left-brain step-by-step, processing functions. All the while our right brain is planning and picturing the outcome, the color and value placement and the execution of the principles of design that will make our final quilt sing and dance for us! Both sides of the brain are engaged and we become totally absorbed in our quilting. Well, so much for the human biology lesson, now back to your regularly scheduled stash busting, paper piecing, coffee and chocolate filled program! Happy Quilting, Lori Allison, President
2 OCTOBER GUEST SPEAKER: DEBBIE BOWLES Debbie came to quilt making via a lifetime of garment and craft sewing. Debbie s approach to design, quilt making and teaching draws on her experiences as an elementary school teacher, Cub Scout Den Mom and Jr. Hi church volunteer work as she leads each quilter to have fun while creating something that pleases them and is uniquely their own. Through her pattern company, Maple Island Quilts and her books, Cutting Curves from Straight Pieces and Dancing Quilts from Straight Pieces (published by American Quilter s Society) and Quilts for the Dorm, Debbie offers achievable, slightly non-traditional projects with enormous design possibilities for all skill levels. She calls her style controlled inventive. Debbie teaches regularly at shops, guilds and events held throughout the US and internationally. She has appeared twice on Home & Garden TV-Simply Quilts (#622, 749), on PBS- M Liss s World of Quilts and Lifetime Real Women, American Quilter and most recently on the long running PBS show, Sewing with Nancy. The Maple Island Quilts pattern line has 40 + titles and is sold globally through the wholesale market to shops and the retail market at the web site, Debbie s quilts have been used in consumer and industry magazine advertisements and articles for many fabric companies. Her quilts travel worldwide to quilt shops. She frequently lectures for major fabric companies at industry shows. Debbie had a quilt traveling with the first Alzheimer s Art Quilt Initiative. She was nominated for the 2010 Teacher of the Year from the International Association of Professional Quilters.
