The book was The Mountain Artisans Quilting Book, by Alfred Allan Lewis. This is a excerpt from that book. Quilting has certain advantages over different forms of needlework. For one thing, it is far more inexpensive than most. There is no need to go to an expensive shop for supplies and instructions. Once the basics are mastered, the crafter can duplicate any quilted item simply by studying it. The materials can be cut from old clothes, sheets, and slip covers that had been intended for no better use than dust rags. At worst, materials can be purchased for the most nominal sums at remnants and fabric outlet shops. 1973

2 Open Sewing We charge $5.00 for the use of the facility which includes ( Sewing tables to sew, lay your quilts out, Irons, cutting tables (bring your own equipment re: rotary cutters,scissors, thread, rulers, etc. We do have cutting mats that you can use. (This does not include instructions on how to help you with your projects, we are very helpful when asked questions, but if you have major problems that you do not know how to handle you will need to take a class or a private lesson. On Sundays we have UFO sewing which is meant for sewers to complete projects that are unfinished, opinions are always offered but if your are in need of assistance in completing certain projects that require more skills then you are capable of, you should take a quilting lesson at a cost of $10.00 per hour. Open sewing is not a scheduled class and you are on your own to complete your projects. Stop by and utilize the design walls, sandwiching tables, irons and cutting tables. PLEASE NO SEWING DURING CLASSES & PILATES... Classroom Rules: All classes will start on time: You will arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time of class. Please have all supplies required. All homework will be completed prior to class. You will be ready when the instructor is ready, she is here to teach us. Any questions will be addressed to the instructor only. All side bar conversations will stop when the class begins. Everyone learns at a different pace. Wait for the instructor to announce the next step before asking what s next. (Be Patient! Listen more, Learn much!) Basic Sewing Supplies (BSS) Sewing Machine Thread to match project Sewing Needles, scissors, cutting mat, rotary cutter, ruler, seam ripper, tape measure, notebook and pen. Sewing machine manual, bobbins. Special sewing machine feet that might be necessary.

3 Group Meetings Sit. Sew. Stay. UFO Day Meets every Sunday from 11:00am-5:00pm. You can work on any unfinished projects to have to complete. Please check calendar for any scheduled classes. UFO will be canceled if there is a scheduled class. Please remember that many quilters use this day to complete and finish projects that they don't have time to work on otherwise. Socialization is always encouraged at the Stash Away but always remember that while sewing quilters need to be able to follow a pattern and directions. If you come to the shoppe to socialize and not-participate in UFO day please use the Crow's Nest (the kitchen area) to talk with others who aren't sewing. Knitters Club All who are interested in knitting, join together & teach each other something new or something old. This group meets every Thursday from 5:00-8:00pm.There will be a $2.00 charge per night/day per person for the use of the building. I will provide the coffee or tea. Stop by & see what we are all about. We are open for suggestions. Needle Felting Group This is a new group this year. The group will be lead by Alice Dennis. This group will meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month from. This group will meet for those enjoying this hobby to work on projects with some advice from Alice. It will cost $2.00 per session. Art Quilt Group The Art Club is a walk-in group. Each quilter who wishes to work with other Art Quilters are welcome to join this group The group will meet the 1 st and 3 rd Tuesday from. Hand Applique Group

4 On Wednesday, October 23 rd at 10:00am there will be an organizational meeting of the newly formed Hand Applique group. This group will meet monthly to learn the skills of turned applique using freezer paper and basting, gluing and or starching. If you have any ideas of what you might like to do in this group please join Helen Lenda and bring your ideas. Quilt Camp Reservations Need a place for your group to meet and sew. Reserve the your space now. I am offering any Monday from 8am-8pm for your group. $10.00 and a dish to pass or $20.00 and I provide two meals and snacks. Call now for your own special day. What s going on at the Stash Away Quilt Shoppe Special Events or Activities Quilter of the Quarter Reception Thursday,October 10th 5:00p-7:00p Quilter of the Quarter- Marie Bova Written by Marie Bova for Marie Bova Marie Bova is from Utica, NY. She has been married to Larry Bova for 45 years. She has 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren who are her life's happiness. Marie stared quilting around 2008 when she met Mary Lou Rosencrants and Maria Henderickson. She was asked to join and quilting group that met on Monday's of each week. The teacher was Mary Ann Etienne. Marie had done sewing before but it was much different that quilting. Even today Marie still is learning new techniques. Marie continues to enjoy quilting because it lets her be herself. If she does it right she gets brownie points. If she is off a little it's her quilt and that's her. She gave her all and if she is not accepted for herself so be it. She is herself and she likes herself.
