DESCENDING Ascending genealgies begin with the mst recent individual and wrk backwards thrugh time t an earlier ancestr. Descending genealgies begin with an early ancestr and mve frward thrugh time t the mst recent individual studied. Determining which frmat best suits yur needs requires thughtful cnsideratin f yur prject s purpse and audience. Presentatins may be ascending r descending; they may fcus n a single line, a single surname, r multiple family branches and surnames. THREE BASIC OPTIONS FOR PRESENTING FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS 1. Genealgies Demnstrate descent frm ne persn r cuple. At least ne generatin highlights mre than ne cuple r family. Single-surname studies fcus upn descendants wh carry the featured family name. Full-family studies treat all lines f descent, by whatever surname. Use either the Register System r NGS Quarterly(NGSQ) System fr frmat and numbering. 2. Lineages Demnstrate descent frm ne persn r cuple r ascent frm ne persn. Only ne persn, cuple, r family are highlighted in each generatin. Individual numbers are unnecessary. 3. Pedigrees Demnstrate ascent frm ne persn. At least ne generatin highlights mre than ne cuple r family. Surce citatins as ftntes r endntes FOUR TYPES OF NUMBERS Genealgies and pedigrees present infrmatin ne generatin at a time and rely n numbering systems t identify and rganize individuals, families, and generatins. 1. Surce citatin numbers cnnect every stated fact nt general knwledge t its surce. In-text superscript citatin numbers usually appear after punctuatin; nt italicized. Register citatin numbers are [bracketed]. 2. Generatinal numbers and letters place individuals in generatinal cntext. American generatins are designated with numbers; in descending genealgies, the earliest American generatin is 1. Eurpean ancestrs are designated with letters. Pre-American generatins are assigned capital letters. Nn-emigrating Eurpean siblings and their children are designated with lwer-case letters. Cllateral lines emigrating t America are designated by cmbining lwer case letters and numbers. Child list birth rder numbers Children are numbered in birth rder using lwer-case Rman numerals fllwed by a perid. 4. Arabic identificatin numbers, unique t each individual, place each persn in genealgical cntext. Individual numbers are assigned sequentially; nt superscripted r italicized. When included with the genealgical summary, they are bld, fllwed by a perid. 3 Understanding Recgnized Genealgical Frmats ASCENDING GENEALOGIES: SOSA-STRADONITZ SYSTEM (AHNENTAFEL) Dating t the sixteenth century, this is a simple way t present a basic family structure. Pedigree style traces generatins back thrugh time beginning with the mst recent. All individuals in the direct line receive an Arabic identificatin number unique t each persn. The mst recent individual is number 1 (male r female). The father is assigned twice the child s number (always an even number). The mther is assigned twice the child s number plus 1 (always an dd number). Parenthetical summaries f descent are nt included. DESCENDING GENEALOGIES: TWO SYSTEMS 1. Register System, develped by the New England Histric and Genealgical Sciety, Bstn, NGS Quarterly (NGSQ) System, develped by the Natinal Genealgical Sciety, 1912 Differences in genealgical summaries Register uses bld face and SMALL CAPITALS t intrduce individuals. Parenthetical summaries f descent are italicized. Generatinal numbers and letters are nt italicized. NGSQ uses bldface. Differences in child lists Parenthetical summaries f descent are nt italicized. Generatinal numbers and letters are italicized. Register child names are SMALL CAPITALS; abbreviatins in data acceptable. Include relatinship clarificatins in child list intrductins, genealgical summaries, and parenthetical summaries f descent. Multiple marriages Each child receives an Arabic individual number. Birth rder numbers fr children may cntinue cnsecutively, r start ver with each new spuse. Each child receives the next-generatin number r letter f the direct descendant. Unknwn father Child receives an Arabic individual number and birth rder number. Child retaining birth mther s surname receives next-generatin number. Stepchildren and adptins Children f the direct descendant are listed first, then children f the spuse (stepchildren); clarify relatinships and parentage in child list intrductins. Assign stepchildren Arabic individual numbers and the next-generatin number f the birth parent; n birth rder number. Adpted children are carried frward with the nuclear family in which they are raised. Adptees f unknwn parentage are identified as the adpted child f the direct descendant and his/her spuse. Present adptees after the direct descendant s children and stepchildren. Assign an Arabic individual number; n birth rder number. Adpted child using adptive surname receives generatinal number 1.
