1 HMTCA High Schl Summer Study There are TWO parts t this year s summer English assignment. The first invlves bks and mvies; the secnd, literary terms. Yu are respnsible fr cmpleting bth parts befre the first day f class. Yu will cmplete an in-class assignment during the first week f the semester n ne f the bks that yu read. Part One Bks and the Mvies that made them Famus This summer, HMTCA high schl students will chse tw titles frm the list attached, read the bks, and watch the mvie adaptatins. Yu have dne this in yur English classes with texts like Rme and Juliet, Of Mice and Men, Lrd f the Flies, and Macbeth, and yu are ready nw t d it n yur wn, with a friend, r a grup f friends. Read and share discussin f a bk and then get tgether t watch and discuss the mvie. I. Jurnal As yu read, chse passages that stand ut t yu. (See belw) Recrd thse in the left-hand clumn f a T-chart (include page numbers). In the right clumn, write yur respnse t the text. Yur bservatins shuld be specific and detailed. Yu can write as much as yu want fr each entry. Cnsider the fllwing: Questin ask abut smething in the passage that is unclear Cnnect make a cnnectin t the wrld, anther text, r yur life Predict anticipate what will ccur based n what s in the passage Clarify answer earlier questins r cnfirm/disaffirm a predictin Reflect think deeply abut what the passage means in a brad sense nt just t the characters in the stry. What cnclusins can yu draw abut the wrld, abut human nature, r just the way things wrk? Evaluate - make a judgment abut the character(s), their actins, r what the authr is trying t say Required number f jurnal entries: Incming freshmen at least six per bk Incming sphmres at least eight per bk Incming junirs at least ten per bk Incming senirs at least twelve per bk 1

2 Sample Jurnal Entry (frm The Things They Carried) Passage -they carried like freight trains; they carried it n their backs and shulders-and fr all the ambiguities f Vietnam, all the mysteries and unknwns, there was at least the single abiding certainty that they wuld never be at a lss fr things t carry. (2) Respnse O Brien ends the first sectin with this sentence. He prvides excellent visual details f what each slider in Vietnam wuld carry fr day-t-day fighting (imagery). He makes yu feel the physical weight f what sldiers have t carry fr simple survival. When yu cmbine this weight with the emtinal weight f lved nes at hme, the fear f death and the respnsibility fr the ther men, the reader starts t understand what sldiers in Vietnam dealt with every day. This qute sums up the cnfusin that the men felt abut the reasns they were fighting the war, and hw they clung t the nly certainty - things they had t carry - in a cnfusing wrld where nrmal rules were suspended. 4 II. Film Study Read the questins befre yu watch the film s yu will knw what t lk fr while yu watch. At breaks during the shw, r at the film s end, yu shuld make ntes in the space prvided. If yu make ntes while the film is playing, make sure that yur nte taking des nt interfere with careful watching f the film. After the film is ver, yu must respnd fully t the questins (attached). Answer each questin in paragraph frm. Respnses must be cmplete, demnstrating that yu paid attentin t the film and thught abut what was shwn n the screen. Please use the attached rubric as a guide t writing fully develped paragraphs. YOUR DIALECTICAL JOURNALS AND NOTES ABOUT THE FILMS WILL BE COLLECTED ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE SEMESTER, AND YOU WILL COMPLETE AN IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENT ON ONE OF THE BOOKS THAT YOU READ. 4
