PARENTS PLEASE NOTE: Smetimes parents are caught ff guard by questins summer reading bks might draw ut f their children. In an effrt t lessen the chance f surprises, I have made a nte f bks that are reviewed by a website called Cmmn Sense Media. This site features an age rating that reflects the site s recmmendatin fr the earliest age that the cntent f the bk is apprpriate. This rating is based n CONTENT ONLY, nt n reading level. Because each child and family are different, and because sme f the bks may cntain vilence r mature themes, I encurage yu t check the site befre chsing yur bks fr the summer; it ffers detail abut material yu may want t be aware f befre yur kids read. Write a 3-5 sentence descriptin f each f the tw characters. Find 3-5 passages in the bk that describe each character directly r that make the persnality f the character clear. RESPONSES TO SUMMER READING REQUIRED RESPONSE: PRESENTATION Yu will prepare a frmal ral presentatin fr ne f yur bks. Yu may chse which bk yu want t present t the class; I recmmend that yu chse the ne yu liked better! Students will turn in their ntecards n August 18, Yur presentatin must be 4-5 minutes. Yu will need t practice yur presentatin at hme t ensure that it is nt lnger than 5 minutes. Yu may use index cards with ntes fr reference, but yu shuld nt read yur presentatin frm the cards. Yu may nt use a fully-written speech. Yu will turn in whatever ntes yu use. This is a frmal presentatin. Yu shuld practice standing still, making eye cntact with yur audience, speaking clearly, aviding distracting mannerisms and filler (um, ah, etc.), and knwing what yu are ging t say BEFORE yu say it. Yur presentatin must include: The title and authr f yur bk A spiler-free summary f the plt. Yu shuld give an idea f what the bk is abut, but yu shuld NOT detail all f its events. The best presentatins will make yur classmates interested in reading the bk themselves. Make sure yu dn t give away the ending. A descriptin f the character yu fund mst interesting and an explanatin f why that character captured yur attentin. This character may be a majr r minr, a her r a villain just make sure (s)he wrth hearing abut! A recmmendatin. Wuld yu encurage yur classmates t read the bk? Why? Even if yu didn t particularly like yur bk, cnsider wh might. Include at least ne quality f the bk that yu liked and ne that yu didn t.
4 OPTIONAL RESPONSE: CHOOSE ONE f the fllwing prjects t cmplete in respnse t yur secnd student-chice bk. This prject is due August 18, OPTION ONE: CEREAL BOX Cver an empty cereal bx with paper and fill in the fllwing infrmatin: Frnt f Bx (20 pints): 1. Cereal Name smething fun that has t d with the stry. As an example, a bx abut Click Clack M (a picture bk abut farm animals) might have the name Clucky Charms. 2. Illustratin, drawn with clr r printed ff the cmputer that represents the bk. Side Panel 1 (20 pints): Title, authr, list f 3 interesting characters with brief descriptins Side panel 2 (20 pints): 2-3 significant qutes frm the bk, cited with the page number. These qutes shuld relate t the larger message (theme) f the bk. Back f Bx (20 pints): 1. Crsswrd puzzle, maze, wrd search, r ther game related t yur bk. This is yur chance t be creative. 2. Brief, spiler-free summary f the bk. Give an idea f what the bk is abut withut giving away all f the details. *If yu read nly ne bk, yu d nt have t write a separate plt summary fr bth assignments. Tp f Bx (20 pints): Review frm yu, the expert critic, with the number f stars yu wuld give it ut f 5. Yur critique shuld include a reasn fr yur rating. Bnus (5 pints): Include a prize related t yur bk. OPTION TWO: CHARACTER INTERVIEW Assume the rle f a news interviewer, and chse ne majr character frm yur bk t interview abut their experience in the stry. Write 10 questins t ask the character. Include the fllwing and label each type (P fr plt, C fr character reactin, D fr decisin, L fr learning). 3 questins abut the plt f the stry. 5 questins abut the character s thughts, feelings, and reactins t the events f the stry. 1 questin abut the hardest chice the character had t make. 1 questin abut what the character learned in the curse f the stry. Write the character s respnses t yur questins. Ensure that the answers yu give are apprpriate fr the character yu are interviewing, and d nt answer with just yes r n. Using specific examples frm the events f the bk will make yur answers strnger. OPTION THREE: SKETCHBOOK Yu will create a cllectin f drawings t represent yur chsen bk. Frnt Cver (15 pints): Create a cver fr yur sketchbk. Include the title and authr f the bk and an illustratin that represents the bk. Sketches (15 pints each): Chse 5 key scenes frm yur bk. Each scene needs t have a significant impact n the stry. Draw a picture (in clr) f each f the scenes. Write 1-2 sentences explaining why each scene is significant. Back Cver (10 pints): Write a review f the bk. Include (1) whether yu recmmend the bk r nt, (2) yur reasns fr yur recmmendatin, and (3) yur ranking ut f 5 stars. *If yu read nly ne bk, yu d nt need t cmpse tw separate recmmendatins fr the prject and the presentatin.
5 OPTION FOUR: BOOK JACKET A bk jacket is the paper cver n a hard-back bk. Its purpse is t entice a reader t pick up the bk and read it. Yu will design yur wn bk jacket fr yur chsen bk. Cver image Create r chse an image that suits the md/atmsphere f the bk and give hints abut what the bk is abut. The strngest cver image will let the reader knw what t expect frm the bk and may include symblic images. It shuld nt cme frm the existing bk r a mvie versin f the bk. Frnt Flap: Character Summaries In the frnt flap, write brief descriptins f the main character and at least 2 ther imprtant characters. Descriptins shuld include bth physical details and persnality traits. The strngest character descriptins will als demnstrate an understanding f the relatinships between characters. ( WORDS EACH) Back Cver: Plt summary The back cver will include a summary f the plt that des nt spil the plt. Instead, it shuld entice a ptential reader t find ut mre. It shuld demnstrate an understanding f the main prblem in the stry and shuld include enugh detail t draw a reader in. (250 wrd max) Back flap: Recmmendatin Als n the back cver, yu shuld include yur pinin f the bk, much like a publisher wuld include. Yu may give psitive r negative reviews, but yu must say why yu give the recmmendatin that yu d. Nte at least ne psitive and ne negative, and clarify what audience wuld enjy the bk. OPTION FIVE: BROWN BAG SUMMARY Find r create 7 items that represent yur bk. Fr each item, write 3-5 sentences explaining hw the bject apprpriately represents the plt, character, cnflict, r theme within yur chsen bk. Why have yu chsen that bject? Hw des it relate t yur bk? Yu will want t use examples frm the bk t explain yur bjects. Make sure that yu have: At least tw items t represent the plt At least tw items t represent key characters At least ne item that represents a majr idea r lessn in the bk.
