1 INSTITUTION AND POSITION PROFILE The Bard f Directrs f the Mind and Life Institute invites nminatins and applicatins fr the psitin f President/CEO. Mind and Life has, fr the past 27 years, pineered the field f cntemplative studies in pairing the wisdm traditins with cutting-edge scientific research and academic schlarship. This emerging field has helped uncver imprtant insights int the mind and human cnditin. Mind and Life s apprach is characterized by a rigrus cmmitment t integrating the perspectives f diverse disciplines that are critically infrmed by deeper philsphical reflectins. While Mind and Life s wrk perates in an array f academic disciplines neurscience, psychlgy, medicine, ethics, religin, anthrplgy, and thers it is always guided by the Institute s larger mandate t alleviate suffering, cultivate kindness and cmpassin, and advance human flurishing. FOUNDING AND LEADERSHIP TO DATE Mind and Life emerged in 1987 frm a meeting f three visinaries: the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader f the Tibetan peple and a glbal advcate fr cmpassin; Adam Engle, a lawyer and entrepreneur; and Francisc Varela, a neurscientist. Tragically, Francisc Varela, primary scientific visinary fr MLI, passed away in Adam Engle served as CEO until his retirement in Subsequently the Bard f Directrs hired Arthur Zajnc, Ph.D. Arthur had been a prfessr f physics at Amherst Cllege frm 1978 t 2011, when he became President f the Mind & Life Institute. PROGRAM OVERVIEW While the funding tri understd that science had becme the dminant framewrk fr investigating the nature f reality and the mdern surce fr knwledge that culd help imprve the lives f humans and the planet the three regarded this apprach as incmplete. Whereas science relies n bjective bservatin, and analysis, Varela, Engle, and the Dalai Lama were cnvinced that well-refined cntemplative practices and intrspective methds culd, and shuld, be used as equal instruments f investigatin instruments that wuld nt nly make science itself mre humane but ensure its cnclusins were far-reaching. Mind and Life was frmed t bridge this divide and spearhead mre cmprehensive prgress in human well-being. Since its first Dialgue with the Dalai Lama, Mind and Life has held 26 ther Dialgues that bring tgether scientists and cntemplatives n a wide range f critical subjects: addictin, eclgy, ethics, attentin, neurplasticity, destructive emtins, altruism, ecnmics, and mre. Additinally, ver the past 27 years, Mind and Life s wrk has extended beynd the Dialgues. The Institute has 1

2 becme a direct funder f influential, individual research via its grant and schlarship prgrams. It has acted as the cnvening rganizatin fr its annual Summer Research Institute, as well as the field s biennial cnference: the Internatinal Sympsium fr Cntemplative Studies. Since 2012 the Institute has taken steps t develp its mst ambitius phase yet: three glbal initiatives in the areas f Ethics, Educatin, and Human Develpment; Craving, Desire, and Addictin; and Mapping the Mind. Much f the success f the Mind and Life Institute has cme frm expanding the hrizns f scientific discurse thrugh engagement with the humanities and cntemplative insights and practices, including Buddhist philsphy and Abhidharma psychlgy. MLI is ideally situated t utilize its cnvening functin t frm multi-institutinal translatinal research netwrks that can mst efficiently pl resurces, expertise, and data at the scale needed t meet the mst challenging prblems. Translatinal research integrates basic research findings acrss disciplines, creating new cnceptual framewrks, methdlgies and platfrms fr testing f new applicatins. Alng with initiating such translatinal research activities, the Institute is cmmitted t rigrus evaluatin f the impact f these initiatives, using the best available measurement technlgies. HUMAN AND FINANCIAL RESOURCES The 2014 annual budget f MLI is apprximately $6.6 millin, with mre than $5 millin in reserve funds t supprt its wrk. The Mind and Life Institute ffices are lcated at the center f the five-cllege cmmunity (Amherst Cllege, Smith Cllege, Munt Hlyke Cllege, Hampshire Cllege and the University f Massachusetts) in Hadley, Massachusetts. MLI s twenty staff members are based there in 5000 square feet f rented ffices. MLI als has rented a huse n the campus f Amherst Cllege that is hme t its Visiting Schlars prgram. The rental agreements fr bth f these facilities g thrugh 12/31/17. The rganizatinal departments are: President; Finance; Develpment and Glbal Relatins; Cmmunicatins; Operatins; Research and Prgrams. The staff is supprted by a central administrative assistant and the president is supprted by a dedicated executive assistant. Recently an internship prgram has been instituted and the crdinatin f events is supprted by a strng vlunteer cntingent. There is a part time Schlar in Residence fr the new Visiting Schlars prgram. In this perid f presidential transitin, the Bard has hired an Interim Vice President wh is cntracted fr a minimum f 6 mnths frm Nvember 27, 2014 thrugh May 27, There is n set maximum n this cntract. The Bard f twelve distinguished, diverse, multinatinal Directrs has a strng histry f aligned cllabratin with the President/CEO, cgnizant f its gvernance, fiduciary, and philanthrpic respnsibilities. The Bard is supprted by ther cmmittees, ntably the Prgram Advisry Cuncil (PAC). The PAC is currently being recnstituted. Decisins abut its respnsibilities and relatinship t the Bard are n hld until the new President has been hired. The Mind and Life Fellws Prgram grants hnrary fellwships t a selected grup f distinguished scientists, schlars, artists, and cntemplative practitiners wh have cntributed significantly t the Mind and Life missin. Our 137 Fellws frm a clse cmmunity, t which the bard and staff 2

3 turn fr advice r recmmendatins abut certain aspects f the Mind & Life Institute s (MLI) missin and prgrams. CURRENT MLI PROGRAMS When the MLI bard hired Arthur Zajnc as President, ne f the first things that the then new President did was t develp a 5-year strategic plan with extensive cmmunity invlvement and bard apprval. This plan added cnsiderably t the scpe f Mind and Life s cre wrk. The main activities f the MLI are rganized int tw categries: Cnvening and Catalyzing; and New Prgram Directins. The MLI bard is cmmitted t cntinuing t develp bth f these categries f activity. CONVENING AND CATALYZING Dialgues with His Hliness the Dalai Lama. The Mind and Life Dialgues began in 1987 as a jint quest between scientists, philsphers, and cntemplatives t investigate the mind, develp a mre cmplete understanding f the nature f reality, and prmte well-being n the planet. Originally cnceived as small, private dialgues with the Dalai Lama and a few scientists and schlars, the Dialgues have since grwn t include large public cnferences that have embraced a variety f pignant, cntemprary tpics and questins including physics and csmlgy, neurplasticity, destructive emtins, educatin, altruism, ecnmics, and ethics. These Dialgues will expand as Mind and Life grws t include Eurpe, Asia, and beynd. Summer Research Institute. The Mind and Life Summer Research Institute (SRI), held annually since 2004 at the Garrisn Institute in New Yrk, is a weeklng event designed t fster cllabrative research in behaviral science, neurscience, clinical science, and the humanities based n a prcess f inquiry, dialgue, and cllabratin with cntemplative practitiners and schlars. The lng-term bjective is t advance the training f a new generatin f interdisciplinary schlars interested in explring the influence f cntemplative practice n mind, behavir, brain functin, and health, including the ptential rle f cntemplative methds in shaping and enriching human experience and cnsciusness. Research Grants. The Varela Awards are tw-year grants t yung researchers fr research n cntemplative techniques in academic fields such as neurscience, cgnitive science, psychlgy, philsphy, and cntemplative studies, with the ultimate gal that such findings will prvide greater insight int the mechanisms f cntemplative practice and its applicatin fr reducing human suffering. The first grants were awarded in In 2014 $180,000 was awarded t 12 researchers. The 1440 Fundatin Awards fr Real Wrld Cntemplative Research are als tw-year grants t prmte research that evaluates whether and hw cntemplative practice can prmte inner well being and healthy relatinships, as well as the develpment f new methds t assess these utcmes in everyday life. The first grants were awarded in In 2014 $194,330 was awarded t 11 researchers. 3

4 Internatinal Sympsium fr Cntemplative Studies. Mind and Life s Internatinal Sympsium fr Cntemplative Studies (ISCS) is a biennial academic cnference that brings tgether leaders frm wide-ranging fields, including neurscience, psychlgy, clinical science, philsphy, ecnmics, humanities, physics, and educatin. The interdisciplinary meeting examines new ideas t advance ur understanding f the human mind, while als illuminating hw mental training thrugh cntemplative practice can lead t reduced suffering, enhance cgnitive-emtinal functining, greater happiness, and increased scial harmny. The gal f ISCS is t help supprt and shape a chesive interdisciplinary field f cntemplative studies in which basic and applied science, schlarship, educatin, the arts, and cntemplative traditins cllabratively cme tgether t develp an integrated way f knwing. The mst recent cnference in Bstn, MA, brught tgether 1,700 participants frm 38 cuntries t attend ver 300 lectures and presentatins. Publicatins, Presentatins, and External Funding. The research and dialgues that MLI has cnvened have been chrnicled in numerus bks, including Train Yur Mind, Change Yur Brain by Sharn Begley, Destructive Emtins by Daniel Gleman, and The Dalai Lama at M.I.T by Anne Harringtn and Arthur Zajnc. Thrugh the supprt f Mind and Life, researchers have prduced dzens f pivtal studies and mre than 200 jurnal articles, chapters, and bks; participated in mre than 300 public talks; btained several prestigius faculty appintments, fellwships, and directrships; and been awarded mre than $11 millin in fllw-n funding. NEW PROGRAM DIRECTIONS Over the next several years, building n the wrk f the last three years, the Institute will undertake its mst ambitius phase yet: glbal initiatives in the areas f Ethics Educatin and Human Develpment (EEHD); Craving, Desire, and Addictin; and Mapping the Mind. Ethics Educatin and Human Develpment. There has always been a deep cmmitment at Mind and Life t understanding what an ethical life can and shuld mean in tday s wrld in rder t address the mral rts f ur glbal prblems. By develping ur natural capacities fr care and cmpassin, we believe we can embed ethics deeply enugh s that it animates all human interactin. It is in this spirit that the MLI has embarked n its bldest endeavr yet: the Ethics, Educatin, and Human Develpment (EEHD) initiative, which has tw active prjects at this time. 1. A Call t Care A Call t Care aims t redress the limited attentin in ur educatinal systems fr cultivating care and cmpassin what we might call the frgtten heart f educatin. Operating at the intersectins f educatin, develpmental science, and cntemplative schlarship, the prject incrprates a distinctive hybrid apprach that fcuses n bth students and educatrs thrugh a prgram perating within a cmmn framewrk that nurtures care. The framewrk is built n a fundatin f cnceptual and empirical research n sci-emtinal learning (SEL) and cntemplative teaching and learning. The framewrk is rganized arund three integrated mdes f care (receiving care, develping self-care, and extending care). 2. The Academy fr Cntemplative and Ethical Leadership (ACEL) In a time f disruptin unprecedented scial and eclgical change many hunger fr leadership marked by the cnsciusness, cnscience, and capacity t catalyze and influence the larger systemic changes nw needed. This is the time t deepen ur understanding f the rle f individual leaders with a cmplementary understanding f hw teams, rganizatins, and 4

5 netwrks can cntribute t leadership and shift the larger scial field. We believe a new field f inquiry, practice, study, and research is needed that can advance ur understanding f hw cntemplatin and mindfulness may play a critical rle in ethical leadership. Craving, Desire, and Addictin. MLI is c-develping and funding a majr research prject with Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett, Prfessr f Psychlgy at Nrtheastern University. A grup f ten distinguished schlars and scientists is cllabrating with her team t design and execute an experience-sampling study that will use smartphnes as a way f studying emtin and delivering cntemplative interventins. Mapping the Mind. While science has dne a superb jb f mapping the csms, the Earth, and the genme, it has nt yet created a cmprehensive map f perhaps the mst imprtant terrain f all: ur minds. Even as wrk prgresses tward prducing a cmprehensive map f the brain and its many functinal netwrks, it is clear that a different apprach is needed fr mapping the first-persn lived experience f the mind. Cntemplative traditins have explred this territry fr thusands f years using such practices as meditatin, and many f the insights these traditins have cme t can be f great benefit in furthering a new map f the mind. The prject f understanding urselves, frm bth uter and inner perspectives, is fundatinal fr the aspiratin t reduce suffering and prmte flurishing. Visiting Schlars. The Visiting Schlars Prgram is situated in a huse affiliated with Amherst Cllege. Mind and Life s Visiting Schlars prgram prvides time and space fr intensive cllabrative wrk between visiting schlars, Mind and Life staff and the lcal academic cmmunity. Eleven awards were given t visiting schlars fr a ttal f $55,000 in Glbal Engagement. The Mind & Life Institute stands at an imprtant juncture in its histry. During the past three years MLI has cntinued t undertake dialgues with His Hliness in Dharamsala, and has added dialgues in Suth India and Japan. It has launched a new series f cnferences n cntemplative studies, first in Denver, then in Berlin, and then mst recently in Bstn. The traditinal MLI Summer Research Institutes (SRI) cntinue as an annual event. Our first Mind and Life Eurpe SRI was recently cmpleted in Suth Germany, with 165 attending, and plans are aft fr a Japanese SRI in 2016 and anther MLI Eurpe SRI in Germany in The Varela Awards cntinue and will expand t include graduates f the Eurpean SRI. In additin t the glbalizatin f MLI s catalyzing and cnvening activities, the educatin initiative and specifically A Call t Care has had brad-reaching internatinal appeal. In July 2014 MLI hsted tw weeklng wrkshps t train educatrs in the thery and practice f A Call t Care, and discuss strategies fr the glbal c-develpment prcess with them. Educatrs came frm Mexic, Israel, Vietnam, India, Bhutan, Denmark, England, Sweden, and Nrway. There was als a grup frm the Central Tibetan Authrity Schls in India. In the United States educatrs have cme frm Massachusetts, Washingtn D.C., Suth Carlina, Gergia, Washingtn State, Cnnecticut, New Yrk, and Wiscnsin. Sme f the next steps fr this wrk n the glbal frnt are being discussed in the fllwing cuntries: 5

6 Vietnam. In September MLI went t Vietnam t meet with the Department f Educatin and subsequently entered int a 9-mnth agreement t pilt a call t care in tw schls in Hue, Vietnam. Israel MLI has entered int a 12-mnth agreement that includes training fr educatrs in 4 Israeli schls. India - A trust has been set up in India t develp the MLI Educatin Initiative there. A grup f 4 delegates tw members f the trust (Ayurgyan Nyas) and tw members frm the IIMT grup f clleges in Meerut and Nida jined us at the Call t Care Glbal wrkshp in July. Bhutan - In additin t the abve new pprtunities, MLI has been wrking with the Grss Natinal Happiness Centre (GNH) in Bhutan t understand the range f existing curricula there and t develp the framewrk fr A Call t Care. Other cuntries (utside f Nrth America, Eurpe and Asia) that MLI has started t develp relatinships with are: Brazil, Suth Africa and Australia. OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES Amng the high pririties fr the next President will be t evaluate past and current prgrams as utlined abve, t develp with the Bard prgrams and plans already well in place, and t create a visin fr MLI s rle in the wrld beynd the present strategic planning hrizn. Certainly amng the current strategic pririties, as imprtant examples, are the fllwing: Nurture Relatinship with His Hliness Maintain the clse relatinship and cllabratin with His Hliness the Dalai Lama fr as lng as His Hliness is able; Reaching ut t Cmmunity Encurage yung scientists, schlars frm thrughut the humanities, and cntemplatives t pursue their mutual interests and t devte themselves t the multi-disciplinary wrk f generating new knwledge; Encurage the cntinuing grwth f scientific, academic and public interest in the empirical study f hw cntemplative practices affect mind, brain, behavir, and human well-being; Supprt internatinal dialgue and spnsr interactin within and between the scientific and cntemplative cmmunities and amplify this dialgue thrugh publicatin and use f the media; Nurture the grwth in Eurpe and Asia, and then elsewhere, f related prgrams, with the gal f making the wrk f MLI mre fully internatinal. Build relatinships with ther emerging leaders; attract leaders t the perpetuatin f MLI s wrk. 6

7 Cmmunicatins During the last 18 mnths MLI has undertaken a self study leading t the creatin f a cmmunicatins strategy that has resulted in a new MLI magazine, a cmplete redesign f ur website, and a regular e-newsletter. We see cmmunicatins and utreach t bth ur academic cmmunity and ur larger public as increasingly imprtant parts f MLI s missin. Fundraising and Shepherding Resurces Identify and increase philanthrpic supprt fr MLI and the academic centers, and help dnrs t supprt prgrams and prjects f wrth and imprtance. Strengthening Diversity MLI cntinues t strengthen its institutinal cmmitment t diversity and inclusin. Thrugh ur recruitment effrts, external relatinships, institutinal plicies and prcedures we seek t cntinue ur psitive reputatin as an inclusive, affirming culture. Visining and Securing the Future Develp the relatinships amng science, cntemplative practices and the humanities, reflecting the awareness f the limitatins f science in achieving a rich understanding f cntemplative practices. Deepening and Extending the Rle f MLI in Cntemplative Educatin and Ethical Leadership Cntinue t expand upn this catalytic and cnvening rle in educatin and leadership t prmte applicatin f new knwledge t practices and prducts in greater sciety, all based n MLI s cre missin -- t create a mre sustainable, cmpassinate wrld; Cntinue t serve as catalyst, cnvener, and partner t the emerging centers f research and teaching in higher educatin, and prmte the applicatin f new knwledge. New Science While fully endrsing the values and practices f science, Mind and Life als seeks a new science whse methds f inquiry and dmains f research are truly integrative, jining the full range f human experience with the mst insightful understandings f mind, nature and sciety. The new science will be at nce, wise and ethical, cntemplative yet technically sphisticated, mdest-- even self-critical-- and yet hpeful. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES The President/CEO: Embdies in values, style, and practice the missin f MLI. Is respnsible t the gverning Bard f Directrs fr implementing all plicy decisins f the Bard and fr the administratin f all prgrams and services prvided by Mind & Life Institute. In partnership with the Bard, is respnsible fr the perpetuatin and enhancement f the highest quality f Bard gvernance, participatin, and financial supprt. The President is respnsible fr 7

8 the emplyment f such staff and utsurced services as are essential t the implementatin f Bard plicies. Is the Institute s principal spkespersn, and represents MLI t the cmmunity. The President builds clse relatinships with key stakehlders, including all cmmittee members, scientific clleagues, leaders in secular, religius, and cntemplative cmmunities, dnrs and funders, and the cmmunity at large. Crdinates clse relatinships with cllabrating rganizatins with a clear understanding f the respnsibilities and privileges f thse relatinships. Is devted t maintaining the cmmitment f stakehlders t the pineering wrk f the Institute, ensuring internally and externally the integrity, cllabrative interpersnal relatinships, and dedicatin t quality that must be MLI s hallmarks. Ensures that, in partnership with the gverning Bard and in cllegial cnsultatin with staff, vlunteers, clleagues, and external stakehlders, the missin and visin f MLI are carried ut t the highest standard. Anticipates changing cmmunity needs with visin and imaginatin, initiates lng-range strategic and peratinal planning, and is respnsible and accuntable fr the business-like implementatin f all such plans. Demnstrates willingness t take carefully-calculated risks, ability t execute, penness t feedback, and ability t alter directin all in resnance with institutinal missin. Oversees the administrative and fiduciary functins f MLI by recruiting, training, clsely supervising, nurturing, mentring and delegating duties and respnsibilities t a dedicated, disciplined, and able staff whse mrale is imprtant t the President/CEO and with whm he/she identifies cllegially. The President/CEO will accept ultimate respnsibility fr all administrative and persnnel decisins, even if, after due cnsideratin in serving the greater interests f MLI and its cnstituents, such decisins are unppular. Leads strngly as an effective fundraiser, wrks clsely with Bard members and staff t identify, cultivate, slicit and grw ptential majr charitable investrs frm bth public and private surces in supprt f MLI prgrams. He/she will functin as a trusted and dedicated steward f all individual and fundatin investments in MLI prjects, and will readily accept persnal respnsibility fr cmpliance with dnr expectatins and fr the quality f dnr investment utcmes. Represents MLI with heartfelt passin, demnstrated cmmitment, authenticity, and deep cnvictin. Is able t establish amng staff, Bard, cmmittee members, participants in MLI prgrams a caring culture that enhances interpersnal relatinships and cmmitment t MLI. Relates well t business and gvernment leaders, and t thught leaders. Relates exceptinally well t the cntemplative, humanities, and scientific cmmunities, inspiring their cnfidence and trust. Builds bridges t ther institutins and is able diplmatically and with the lng view t envisin and cnstruct strategic partnerships that prmte the interests f MLI, the wrk f MLI with its grwing number f cllabratrs, the cllabrating rganizatins themselves, and the cmmunity at large. 8

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE Mind and Life is searching fr a strng leader, with many gifts, wh can cntinue carrying frward the spirit f Mind and Life int the future. The ideal candidate fr the presidency f Mind and Life Institute will have the fllwing experience and qualities: The ideal candidate may cme frm any academic r prfessinal backgrund. He r she will bring experience and credentials sufficient t build strng cllabrative relatinships with researchers, academics in the sciences and humanities, and leaders f cntemplative practice. The ideal leader wuld be engaged in a current cntemplative practice. He/she is expected t embdy thse qualities f mindfulness, empathic cncern, and cmpassin fr which cntemplative practitiners strive and t be whlly resnant with the values f practitiners. He/she must value pen-hearted, authentic, and inclusive persnal relatins, will live the cre values f cmmitment t a mre cmpassinate wrld upn which MLI is funded, and will be passinately dedicated t the imprtance f thse values infrming the multi-disciplinary, crss- cultural wrk f MLI clleagues and external partners. He/she will have internatinal experience and will be highly culturally sensitive, cmfrtable, and adaptable in wrking with leaders frm diverse backgrunds in different parts f the wrld. It is imprtant that the candidate have expertise sufficient t be an effective internal leader and external spkespersn fr the imprtance f this interdisciplinary, crss-cultural, glbal wrk. The candidate shuld be able t wrk with the Mind & Life cmmunity t develp and articulate an emerging view f science that supprts credible inquiry, knwledge, and understanding when the bundaries f subjectivity and bjectivity are unclear. The ideal candidate will als have: Extensive hands-n management experience and prven leadership ability. An imprtant asset is experience in bringing visin t a grwing institutin, strengthening its prgrams, reaching ut t and cllabrating with new cnstituencies, experimenting with innvative prgram mdels, emplying new delivery systems and technlgies. Experience in the maintenance f rganizatinal financial sustainability, in leading cmplex rganizatins at times f financial challenge, in wrking penly and cllegially thrugh difficult 9
