1 CENTRAL OHIO WOODTURNERS February 2003 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE February 2003 Message From the President Groundhog s day has come and gone without any sign of a shadow, at least where I was, so I guess that means we re in for an early spring. I have mixed feelings about that, being both a snow skier and a wood turner. I ll regret putting the skis away with until next year, but getting out the chain saws for another season of harvesting turning stock will more than make up for it. I began harvesting my own blanks shortly after I started turning, because I wanted to be able to experiment and practice techniques without worrying about ruining expensive pieces of wood. Since then I ve developed a preference for bringing a piece all the way from the tree to its final form. I really enjoy the time spent out in the woods or in someone s back yard, usually in the company of other turners, sawing up a tree and imagining what we will make from it. It s the perfect complement to the hours I spend indoors, working alone in the shop. All this is by way of an introduction to this month s meeting demonstration. Harvesting your own blanks is great, but how do you know what you ve got? At some point, you pass the practice stage, and have so much wood in the garage that the spouse can t get to car without barked shins. Then you have to become more selective. Enter Bob Klips, professor at The Ohio State University, Marion campus. Bob will be teaching us about wood identification, so that we will be able to identify what we are harvesting and make more informed decisions about whether or not to approach a neighbor with a downed tree. Even if you don t harvest your own blanks, being able to identify wood in finished pieces and purchased materials is a very useful skill for a turner, or for any wood worker. I hope you are able to attend this very interesting and useful presentation. Tip Barb Crockett entered her Baltic Birch Duck (far right) in the Ohio Valley Woodturner s Guild Contest. 2 Secretary s Report- January 14, 2003 What a turnout this month Ron Damon counted 108 people at the meeting this month. It s great to see all of the new faces as well as those that are so familiar. It s really easy to spend time talking to your old friend but at the next meeting take some time to introduce yourself to someone you don t know. Speaking of new faces we had several at this meeting Ron Donaldson, Ronald Dick, Joan Whited, Claudia Taylor, Corky Taylor, George Whited, Bob Ross, Sheena Ross, and Mark McCarty. Tip opened by announcing that we will again be turning at the Woodworking Show at the fairgrounds on the 17 th -19 th. This was a great event with a lot of fun had by all. Chuck Kemp was scheduled to turn at Rockler on the 25 th. Rockler was offering discounts on tools in conjunction with this. On the Yahoo group some members asked about mentoring, after discussing this at the steering committee meeting the officers have agreed to give this a try. Andi Wolfe is cocoordinating this effort and will help to match mentors to wanting mentoring. It is important to remember that mentors are there to help and not for free lessons. Andi will be demonstrating at the AAW symposium in Pasadena this year. The steering committee also tried to do some budgeting for the following year. We are buying some new tapes (these will be available at the February meeting). We want to buy a club grinder, and a mobile base for the General Lathe. Bob Rosand will be demonstrating Saturday March 8 th. There will be a $30 per person charge and this will include lunch. There will also be a Sunday hands on at Barb s shop for $75. Show and Tell Craig Martin brought in two hollow forms, one made from carved ash and another of apple with some burl. Blair Davis brought in two natural edged forms that he had treated with a 4-1 solution of detergent to help minimize movement and stop checking. Bennet Wise brought in some interesting plates with sterling silver inlay. Fred Kimes brought in a bowl made of layers of Baltic Birch plywood. Fred used a variable speed router to cut 32 flutes into the bowl. He had to use the variable speed router to prevent burning. This was for a competition at the Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild January meeting. Dave Bowers brought in a small bowl of IPE and Maple burl. Jim Eliopulos brought in a Pecan bowl with a nice lip treatment. Andi Wolfe brought in several nicely decorated pieces four of which are going to the Del Mano gallery. Ron Grady brought in an interesting natural edge walnut piece with very thick bark and a flat bottom. Tip had an interesting bowl turned from square stock. He also had a hollow form of Ambrosia Maple with a natural rim. Walt Berchak brought in a very nice pepper grinder. Mike Burgess brought in a salad set with a nutcracker. Kurt Waninger brought in a fantastic bulldozer that was a combination of woodturning and woodworking. This project got Kurt started in woodturning. Kurt also brought in his first green turned walnut bowl and a mahogany goblet with an aniline dyed stem. Jim Kiourtsis bought in a small camphor bowl and a small ambrosia maple bowl. Joel Bossley brought in a flat top hollow form with a textured top; Joel has been doing some interesting texturing take some time to check out his work. Ron Fisher brought in a small ash bowl that was very well done. Jerry Hubschman brought in Bedouin turned piece that was used to smash coffee beans. Chuck Kemp had a small poplar bowl with a thin bottom and an open form from poplar. Barb Crockett had her piece for the OVWG competition a large off axis Baltic Birch duck. Jon Calland brought in a rock maple bowl. Al Schmidt brought in some scoops and a mortar and pestle in a nice holder. The three scoops were 1 ½, 2 ½ and 3 ½. Joel had a natural edge piece. Respectfully Submitted, Scott Hogsten COW February 2003 Page 2

Woodworkers of Central Ohio meet February 8, Spring Rd Church of Christ, 74 Spring Rd., Westerville, OH 9:00am 1:00pm AMBROSIA MAPLE At our last meeting, there was some minor discussion on what constitutes Ambrosia Maple. Our collective understanding may be enhanced by reference to the following. This is a description provided by Donald J. Borror and Dwight M. Delong (OSU Entomologists from my student days). The ambrosia or timber beetles bore into the hardwood of trees and feed on fungi that they cultivate in their galleries. They do not eat the wood, but do considerable damage by tunneling through it. The larvae develop in small cells adjoining the main galleries, and in most species the larvae are fed by adults. Each species usually feeds on one particular type of fungus; when the females emerge and fly to another tree, they carry conidia of the fungus from the natal gallery to the new host and introduce the fungus into the gallery they excavate. After the eggs hatch, the females usually care for the larvae until they are full-grown and pupate. To do this, they must keep the larval burrows supplied with fresh fungus, or ambrosia, and they keep the galleries clean by carrying away the feces of the larvae. There are several species of Ambrosia beetles, as well as several species of Maple. Therefore the resulting staining is not always the same.
