We had four lathes set up with multiple skills being demonstrated. On the Powermatic lathe our president, Rich Vossler, was demontrating how a hollowing system works. Rich brought in his Lyle Jamieson hollowing system. By using a fairly open turning, members were able to use the tool and see how and why it cut. Rich had a steady stream of members coming to learn and try the hollowing system. Tony DeMasi was set up on one of the mini lathes teaching folks how to turn bowls. Tony brought a bucket of bowl blanks and his bowl gouges to help anyone who was interested in learning how to turn bowls. There was a steady crowd with some members even taking part in the turning. Dave Hickman gave demonstrations on finial turning and use of the detail gouge. I have no idea how it went because he was set up just out of my sight line. I did see a couple of members near him and at least one other person trying their hand at finial turning. Tim Gregory was set up on a mini lathe demonstrating spindle turning tools. He demonstrated how to use a roughing gouge and spindle gouges. After showing how they were used, three different members would rotate through, practicing what they'd just learned. After a cursory explanation of how to use the skew, Alan Baker took over and showed members how he uses the skew. Don Maloney assumed his customary hands on demo of helping members with their sharpening needs and questions. He was also set up out of my line of sight so I'm not sure how many members sought his great advice. We ll be doing another guided-mentoring program in October, so if there is a tool or technique that you would like to have demonstrated, please contact Mark Zimmerman

Included in the rental will be a set of accessories for the lathe (4-jaw scroll chuck, spur drive, live center, face plate), plus a set of turning tools. All equipment must be returned at the next AVW meeting, and can be rented again after the meeting if available. If you are interested in renting a lathe, please see Lance at the meeting or him at pear194@visuallink.com. Elvin Rose will back up Lance when he can t be at the meeting.

4 Club President s update: Smocks! I am excited! I just got word from Terry Lund that we have found a source for woodturner s smocks at an affordable price. These will be the same basic smock as the AAW sells but I believe we will be able to make them available to our club members with the AVW logo for significantly less money than the AAW charges. I am still getting the details together but I hope to have an order form put together for our May meeting. My thoughts for the month: Sometimes life gets in the way of the things you enjoy and want to do. That has been the case with me lately. Over the last month my work schedule has had me in Ohio, Texas, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maryland and Pennsylvania. My weekends have been packed full too with volunteer work for the Knights of Columbus, New Eve Ministries, and the Boy Scouts of America. Keeping our club running smoothly requires more time than you might think. Several volunteers joined me at McFarland s Mill a few Saturday mornings ago to organize our storage cabinets. We had to order additional chucks and face plates to make sure we had a complete accessory kit for each lathe. Getting the lathe rental program up and running took many volunteer hours from Lance Pearce, Tim Gregory, Mark Zimmerman and me. Even the day to day working of the club, planning meetings, getting items for our raffle, organizing our pepper grinder group buy, etc. all take a share of my time and others as well. I also have a personal life and family obligations. There is always some sort of maintenance to do on the house, grass to cut, gardens to tend, and my daughter needed my help in moving into a new apartment this month. Not that all those activities aren t good things that I wanted to do, it is just that they crowded out any time for turning wood that I might have had. We just had our April meeting and I didn t bring in a show and tell piece for the first time in years. Our last president almost never brought anything to show and tell and I am beginning to understand why. It s not that Dick didn t like to turn, it s just that life got in the way.

5 I hope I don t come across as complaining about how busy I am, as that is not my intention. I do know how to say No and it has been my choice to lead a very full life. We all make decisions about how to use our time and talents and I am normally happy to serve the needs of others. Helping others is a very high calling in life and I am certain many of you feel the same way. We just need to be careful that our willingness to serve doesn t deprive us of needed rest and relaxation. So lend a helping hand when you see a need, it is the right thing to do. Just don t let life get in the way of the things you enjoy and want to do. Make time to enjoy the fun of turning some wood.
