2 Page 2 John Myers and his wife Barb In this issue, we learn something about John Myers who lives with his wife Barb in Cordova, IL. John grew up in the Waterloo area and graduated in a class with 21 classmates in Dunkerton, Iowa. After high school he went to Seattle and learned to weld and then became an iron worker. He got a job in construction work building water towers and large steel tanks. While on a job in Minnesota, he met Barb. In a weak moment, she agreed to marry him. They have 3 daughters and a son and 5 grandchildren in their 43 years of marriage. His welding skills brought him to Cordova for the construction of the nuclear plant. During weather delays he began a commercial fishing business which evolved into operation that included nets and two 20 boats. A decent day fishing netted 600# of fish and a good day produced 1000# mostly carp and buffalo as well as catfish caught on trout lines which were marketed at Mensingers Fish Market in Comanche, IA. After another stint working construction at the Palo reactor he wanted to be living at home with his growing family. He applied for and was hired at IH as a welder. Not liking the working conditions or the monotonous routine he decided to look for something else. Before he could get out of the building they hired him on in the maintenance department. He worked there for 27 years. While there, he noticed that the shipping containers, pallets, skids, and other materials were just scrapped and sent to the land fill. That started his current business as a broker for recycling those materials to various industrial concerns. What can t be reused is ground up and is sold as mulch to large users. John began wood working doing mainly flat work. He has made some of the furniture in their home. He claims to only been turning for 4 years. He must be a quick learner because the quality of his work is very good. His pieces are unique because Barb is in charge of the critique process which is done before John removes the piece from the lathe. She is pretty picky, John said. Barb also adds an elegant touch to the piece by wood burning a leaf of the tree that the piece was made from as well as John s name. His first lathe was a $25 Craftsman that he bought on a farm sale. From that he went to a larger Jet, and currently has a Powermatic that he is very happy with. John has made many useful devices for his shop such as a dust collection system and a lazy susan to hold an irregular piece of wood for shaping with a chainsaw. He has built his own boring bar system on which he can mount his new style Rolly Munro hollowing tool. Another favorite tool is the fingernail gouge. He likes to work with cherry wood and needs to practice more with the skew to become comfortable with it. He claims to be a hobby turner and is not actively trying to market his work. He said the only advice he has to offer is enjoy your work and have fun while you practice. There will be no real system of those chosen to appear in our newsletter but we hope to get everyone interviewed in the coming months and years. Members are outside a little bit more getting those flowers and gardens planted and getting those honey-due lists completed. The club has slowed down, or has it? Randy Nagle invited the Cedar Rapids woodturners down to our club for a skew learning class. It was a great way to meet eleven great people from another club. They were very impressed with our facilities. They do not have a permanent home at the moment. Lydal Anthony bought six boys from Dubuque, Iowa (his industrial arts class) to an all day Saturday class on woodturning. These boys were perfect gentlemen and eager to learn. The boys had a great time and so did the members helping with the class. I encourage all members, no matter how good a turner you are to get involved helping out with these classes. You learn so much helping others. Dennis Hurd did his first demo at the May meeting. Boy, did he do a great job. Dennis was very well prepared; showed us some good tool work, and some good tips on making an ice-cream scoop. The topper of the demo was: at the time he finished, his wife bought in Whiteys ice cream so that all members could see the ice cream scoop work. We all got an ice cream sunday. Dennis knows how to make a demo work and make friends. Speaking of demos, we are getting volunteers for demos. This is a good sign that our club is advancing and our critique table is showing so much excellent work. Another sign that our club is working in the right direction to promote woodturning. 6 Page 6 Ice Cream Scoop (handle) Demo by Denny Hurd Denny Hurd did a demo on how to make an ice cream scoop handle at the May meeting. To make an ice cream scoop, you will need these items: Tools: Roughing gouge ( large or small) Skew (5/8 or 1 3/8 ) or spindle/detail gouge (5/8 ) Parting tool Calipers or measuring block Jacobs chuck with 3/8 or 23/64 drill bit Brad point preferred. Spur drive center if no chuck is available Cone live Center for tailstock Recommended: Scroll chuck Drill press if no Jacobs chuck is available Materials: Ice Cream scoop kit from Rockler or Alan Lacer ($ brass or $13 Chrome) ( or Blank of hard wood approx. 2 x2 x8 Ash, Walnut, Maple, cherry, etc. Finishing materials such as Poly or similar Glue- Epoxy or CA or Super Glue Procedure: Drilling the Hole To create an ice cream scoop handle, start with making the sure the blank is reasonable square and cut off square on each end. If you don t have a Jacobs chuck for your lathe, drill a 3/8 hole about 1 ½ deep on one end of the blank. Otherwise, mount the blank in the scroll chuck with each of the four corners between the jaws. If you are having problems centering the blank, mark the center of each end before mounting and use the cone in the tailstock to center that end.

7 Page 7 Make sure the blank is securely fastened in the chuck and the chuck key is removed. Mount the Jacobs chuck in the tailstock and drill a hole in the end of the blank about 1 1/2 deep. Withdraw the bit frequently to clear the chips. Then remove the Jacobs chuck from the tailstock Fitting the Ferrule Rough shape the blank and bring the ferrule end (tailstock end still) down to about 1 ½. Measure the tenon with calipers while using the parting tool or the skew while in a planning cut. The tenon at final size will be 1 in diameter and about ½ wide. After final fitting of the size of the tenon, slightly back cut it so the ferrule will fit tight. You might need to make a Vee cut with the skew to align the ferrule with the end of the handle. Shaping the handle Use either the skew or a spindle gouge to shape the handle. I prefer a rounded ridge about 1 from the ferrule as a thumb rest. The handle can be sized to your hand or the hand of the intended user. I also prefer a rounded end on the butt end of the handle, so now is a good time to complete this again with either the skew or gouge. Just leave enough that you can easily part it off later. Sand and Part off Now is the time to sand the handle. I start with 220, then 320, then higher if needed and be sure to sand with the grain to remove all circular sanding marks. Then part off the handle with the parting tool or skew. If you leave a slight tip on the end of the handle, remove it carefully after parting off. Finish and assemble Now you can finish the handle with the finishing materials of your choice. I like wipe-on Poly. It takes a while to dry, but is very smooth and durable. Finally assemble the ferrule by gluing with CA or epoxy glue and then the scoop itself. Believe me, it doesn t work to reverse the order of this assembly!! You can choose to assemble the items first and then apply the finish as the last step also. Now Enjoy!!
