2 During today s meeting of October 22, 2011 a side discussion was held by Joel Rakower, Ken Deaner, Norm Abrams, and Joe DeMaio, The subject of which was connecting with and meeting the needs of our junior members. We discussed ways to make the meetings more enjoyable and educational. The computer generation is focused on watching an exciting demonstration and seeing some great member creations. They would prefer to have the business portion of our meetings printed in our ed Newsletter. The By Laws of the LIWA call for an Executive Board which shall consist of the following members: A. President B. Vice President C. Secretary D. Treasurer E. Membership Chairman i.e. Program Chair F. Immediate past President G. Three elected board members The executive board shall meet monthly prior to the regular meeting, or at the request of the president or three board members. A majority of the board members shall constitute a quorum with a majority of those present required for action. The executive board shall determine general policy and manage the affairs of the association, subject to the approval of the membership... On a practical basis, these members can meet and take care of most business. The following changes will take effect immediately in order for the demonstration to become the focal point of our meetings. A. We will elect three board members in addition to our Club officers in December. Contact either Joel Rakower or Norm Abrams, if you wish to nominate yourself or another member for any of the above. The board will meet before the regular Saturday meeting at 8:00 AM every other month or when an important issue needs to be addressed. On a practical basis these officers can meet and take care of most business without eating up valuable club meeting time. B. Meetings will begin at 9:00 AM except when a visiting turner is demonstrating. Meetings will begin at 8:30 AM- 1:30 PM and include lunch when we have a guest turner. C. The Newsletter should be your guide to keep you abreast of Club activities and issues. Speak to any Board member if you have any concerns, ideas or wish to volunteer. The schedule for the following month s events will be posted on the chalkboard at each meeting and in the Newsletter. Meetings will begin promptly with either the demonstration or Show and Tell. Q. and A. and business comments will be made at the conclusion of the meeting for those who wish to remain. Votes on major issues will continue to be made by the entire membership. Special events like participation in the Long Island Woodturner s Show, BOCES outreach etc. will be done by committee. Library requests should be made directly to the Club librarian, Richard Barth. C.Pete Richichi, Program Chair, has established the following program for November Derek Weidman Multi-axis turning. Derek is a young professional turner who creates faces, animals etc. using multi-axis turning as a technique to carve fantastic forms. He demonstrated at Connecticut Symposium and is a rising star both nationally and on the world stage. Not to be missed. December Holiday breakfast, Club elections and multi-station learn-to- turn. We will set up a minimum of four lathes. An experienced member will host each lathe.

3 You will be able to rotate from area to area and try your hand at different turning skills. Speak to Pete Richichi if you would like a specific skill addressed at one of the lathe stations. Sharpening tools to improve your turning hosted by John Kowalchuk, Segmented pen turning hosted by Barry Saltzberg, Bowl Turning for the novice hosted by Les Hoffman, Carving and texturing, burning to enhance your turnings hosted by Ken Deaner, Spindle turning (How to turn a gavel)-charlie Panzner, Natural edge Carl Saenger January- Don Lindsley Coring bowls February Michael Hosaluk World famous outside presenter Multi day event March Bob Brady Bob always comes up with exotic and interesting turning demos April Paul MacMenamin May June TBA The program chair will make every effort to create programs that address the needs of novice and experienced turners alike. Special attention will be given to meeting the needs of youthful turners. Contact Pete if you would like a specific topic demonstrated or if you would like to do a demo for the club. A large screen television was purchased by the LIWA and donated to BOCES. This television will be used at each LIWA meeting to broadcast a larger, clearer picture of demonstrators techniques at the lathe. The TV will be mounted on the front wall of the BOCES shop behind the lathe. L.I. Woodworkers Show November 12-13, 2011 Thanks to all those for volunteering to demonstrate woodturning at the L.I. Woodworkers Show in Old Bethpage Village this past weekend. The LIWA had many interested people watching our members turn at two mini-lathes. October 22 Demonstration Greg Nicharico- Penturning Greg recommends Barry Gross book Penturning. We hope that the proposed changes will stimulate the creative juices of all of our members and enhance their enjoyment of our meetings and turning. Ken Deaner, Joel Rakower Club member Richard Barth has become the new LIWA Librarian taking over for Bette Adamo. Thanks Bette for your service to our club. Please contact Richard for any library materials. Club Treasurer Joe DeMaio reported a balance of $2,784. -pen blanks can be cut from larger sized boards to cut costs -when turning acrylics, Greg routs the corners to reduce splintering and chards during the roughing process -Greg uses a pen mandrel that has a tailstock stabilizer. This prevents the mandrel from bending which produces an uneven cut

4 -use pen bushings specific to that pen model. -Greg showed and used some of his gouges that he has reshaped into scrapers. He has many tools of this type. Greg can move to another sharpened tool instead of spending time re-honing a single scraper many times. Thanks Greg, for an informative presentation. Show and Tell Peter Richichi-segmented vessel mahogany, maple, cherry bowl Joel Rakower-natural edge cherry burl bowl -after blanks are trued to a cylinder, Greg uses a freshly sharpened scraper to reduce the wood diameter to be just proud of the bushings. -He then uses sandpaper to achieve the final thickness. -being a production turner, Greg will turn many pens of the same model to maximize his effort. -after sizing the blank to his satisfaction, Greg applies sanding sealer and various waxes and finishes. Steve Fulgoni-l 3 engrain walnut vessels with heartwood & sapwood included, one black locust vessel -Greg assembles the pen blanks and mechanisms complete the pen making process.

5 Paul MacMenamin- dogwood bowl, walnut bowl, winged piece of maple Bob Fentress- tiny osage & holly vessel with finial Martin Rost-pecan bowl with shellac finish, maple platter with walnut oil finish Les Hoffman-large kumari platter with urethane finish, six inch bocote bowl, eight inch cherry bowl,, sweet gum bowl, covered cherry bowl with maple top Bob Sesti-walnut bottle, ash vase with leaves burned on surface, copper beech vessel with lid and blackwood finial Carl Saenger-irregular shaped dish and rim of unknown wood type finished with shellac and Deft. Ken Deaner-hollowed maple bowl with finial, microphone carved, indexed Norm Abrams-, small cherry bowl Newsletter photos: Bob Fentress Bob Urso- ice cream scoop, curly maple pen
